I've stayed in Havanna for monthes at at time, both in Touristy areas and in a very very slum part of town where I was the only white guy.

I didn, t experience any problems at all, and felt safe.

The girls get done for being in a zone that they are not supposed to be in, thats how police control the place, they restrict movement.

The fine is about 1 euro so no biggee.

Once my gf got done for being with me whilst I was getting her antibiotics for her baby.

Overall I think Havanna, isn, t a great location if your into just uncomplicated by the hour sex, its good for extended gfe only

Well i guess your post is refering to another boardmember not me. So far i have not had any experiences with illegal casas in havana or cuba in general. So i guess you wanted to reply other boardmembers like vedado fun or berrysteery.
Well concerning the security in havana i just post what i have experienced so far. There are also other boardmembers who think that havana can be a dangerous place especially at night so i guess i am not totally wrong.
Well i probably will be in havana again in a couple of weeks and then i will see it for myself how the situation is like

Well, it depends on what you mean.

I have stayed in casas of friends and family of friends where I have not paid. I have paid in casas with licenses.
I have not paid to stay in casas without licenses....though I know people who have. The last one you have to be a little more carefull of....at least have an idea of what the hell is going on.

The places that I have stayed and not paid, the neighbours were cool, did'nt care or did'nt know

In cuba if you want to rent out a casa/room you need to have a government license, but there are also people who rent out room who do not have such a license so maybe that is what vedado fun meant by private casa are illegal.

Yeah okay, it is the term 'private' that had me confused. If it means 'illegal' I am aware of the dangers of staying there.

What i would want to do is have a legal case, but with a private entrance to avoid nosy carnet-happy casa owners. If anybody has recommendations for such a place, I would be happy to hear about it.

The issue with illegal casas is that you have no recourse. I've met quite a few people that have been robbed in illegal casas. They were on longer term stays and wanted to go cheap. They ended up getting robbed.

Once you have been robbed in an illegal casa you have no recourse. If you report it to the police, they are more interested in the illegal casa than you getting robbed.

In a legal casa, you have the recourse of complaining to the police.


Legally, casas have to be part of the owners house. They can license/rent out up to 2 rooms. They cannot legally rent out independant apartments. Some may do so if they know you or are well connected and can do it without fear. The most likely is to rent a place with an independant entrance you your rented room. Either way, the owner is responsible for any Cuban that may enter.

And could you elaborate on your casa advice? Until now I have always stayed in hotels and taken the chicas to casas I know where you can have a room for a couple of hours or the entire night for 15 CUC. But was thinking about staying in a casa next time around, but would then definately prefer a private casa with private entrance to take chicas in unnoticed. Why is this dangerous? And what do you mean by 'private casas are illegal'. Whats your definition of a 'private casa? '

Once i almost got robbed when i left a local disco in la vibora and i noticed that 2 dudes were following me on my way back home to my casa. Luckily i lived really close to that disco and my casa owner was still sitting front of the house with his pitbull so i guess that´s why they finally did not attack me.
The second time i was out in vedado drinking with a girl when all over a sudden 2 dudes joined us and started to bother us. Well my girl had to go to the restroom and 1 of the dudes followed her. Once she got back she was like let`s go call a taxi and i was like why what happened?? Inside the taxi she told me that the dude who followed her asked her to go with me into this very dark street and they would beat me up and spilt the money etc...

I go to Havana aprox 4 times a year. I used to think it was very safe but I no longer do. I wouldn't say it's extremely dangerous but you really have to be very careful where you hang out especially after dark. I know of many bad things that have happened in Havana but I'm not about to write details in here. Just be very careful and you shouldn't have any problems.

As far as I know it's illegal for a casa to be rented out solo. The room has to be part of the casa owner's house. There are lots of casas that have private entrances that are separate from the main casa entrance.

A private casa to me is one where you stay alone and the owners are staying elsewhere. I'm pretty sure this is illegal. I also think this is dangerous because there's no one to help you if something goes wrong. For example if you have a chica in there one night and she sees that you have lots of things that her real boyfriend and her might like to steal who's going to help you if she and her boyfriend and others come to rob you? This is a situation that could be very dangerous and has been for certain people. I never rent a casa alone for that very reason. I'm sure if you have been to Havana many times and know the area and people well that in certain cases it's probably ok to rent a casa solo.

There's no problem in taking chicas back to most casas but if you don't want to be seen just do it late at night after the casa owner has gone to bed.

When you decide to rent a casa it's best to ask all the questions to the casa owner before you rent so there are no surprises later. I always tell my casa owners that I may be bringing chicas back to my room and that I will always check the Carnet (ID Card) and write the number down especially if the chica may stay overnight. I tell the casa owner that I don't want them to hassle my chicas in any way and that if they do I will move to another casa.
