If you get sick in the southern DR you can go to several US-standard hospitals at reasonable (lower than US) rates in the capital, notably Clinica Abreu where when I went (for a dengue check) I had to wait to allow for security since the president was in there having a mole attended to.
Most embassy staff go there as well, vs. say flying to Miami.
If you had the misfortune to go to a public hospital well, you should have paid more, and not much more.
Also walking at night especially drunk or alone after dark in Boca Chica is risky for the reason you mentioned. Use a motoconcho downtown to uptown. Note it is risky in many US cities as well.

I'm sure the doctors are very professional. The Dr. who treated me was excellent, very nice and reasonably priced. I am referring to the ER in the hospital I visited. No modern trauma center, to be sure.
I would have to say it is more dangerous than any other place I've been to.
BC is the only place I've been mugged. That's why the all-inclusives have guards, with shot guns out front and the tourists don't leave the compound.
Most people are very nice. Some of the girls are very beautiful. I would go back if there were no other places to go.

well, getting sick in dr isn't that bad if you have a travel insurance. there are very professional doctors in santo domingo once you have the money or proof of insurance.

i was mugged in bc. while walking, a motorbike pulled up, with 3 guys. two got off and grabbed me. the driver went away. i got away but one took my prescription glasses. i gave them $20 for the glasses. i could have been hurt or killed. there's a lot of desperados in sd
the reef traps all the pollution in the bay, it's toxic. i went swimming in it and got a double ear infection. woke up feeling like id been punched on both sides of my head.
had to go to the santo domingo dump they call a hospital emergency room (don't get sick or injured in dr) where i was referred to a private dr. , who vacumed my ears and gave me antibiotics.
i'll never go back to that poophole.

If I learned one thing about boca chica, it is DO NOT go during Semana Santa (Easter). I was thinking that spring break in the dominican city where most of the locals go would mean lots of semi pro action and a good price to quality ratio. How wrong I was. I stayed at El Caucho, and even there all the girls under 180 lbs. (80kg? ) left to go see their family. One guy I met had stayed there for 3 months (it's his new home) and he told me that normally there are nice "house" girls working at the hotel. But there were not any while I was there.
As far as the hotel itself goes, it was nice enough for $35. The owners were very nice and helpful, however, avoid room 16 until they get around to fixing the water leaking from the pipes in the bathroom ceiling! (and avoid the caprese salad with the fake, tofu tasting mozerella).
As for the beach and the town, it is dirty. You walk down the street and you smell dead, rotting animals. I heard about people being mugged and there are some guys on motoconchos who supposedly take you out of town to be mugged. However I never had any problems and I'm always by myself. It still wasn't a town that was nice and clean that I felt comfortable hanging out in.
The beach was pretty, but there were so many people (by their looks, more haitian than dominican) that you couldn't hardly see the sand. Honestly people had less than a foot or two of space around them and their beach towel. I've been told the beach is very beautiful in normal conditions, but I can't confirm this. There is a reef that stops most of the waves coming in, which makes for very calm water. However it is very warm, and with so many people in the water, it makes me feel like it is just a big bath tub for everybody (and tons of little kids pissing in it, of course).
As far as the action, there didn't seem to be many non pros hanging out. Since I was nearly the only white tourist in the whole town, I really stood out from everyone. I'm sure I would have been approached had there been many working girls, but I wasn't. The moto kids can take you to a few houses with girls, but the are not budging off 2000 pesos for basic service. Maybe it was cause of the tons of people in town, they are in more demand or someting, but I never saw more than a couple other guys come into the houses while I was there. So I don't see why they think they are worth that much money. It was really mind blowing. There weren't even any really hot girls to choose from. Some were decent, but not worth over $60 for a an hour. So the action was very disappointing.
So I can't say stay away from BC all year round, but definately stay away at easter vacation. And as a whole, everybody says the north is better. Even santo domingo is more clean and has a much better selection of nightlife and women. That's my 2 cents.

Casa Linda Villas - Is an gated community a few minutes drive outside of Sosua off of Autopista #5. The community mainly consists of ex-pats; however, because some of these homes are 2nd homes, they are rented out to tourists. Prices range from approximately $80-150 a night for 2 and 3-bedroom villas that include a private pool, full kitchen, and 2 bathrooms.

Caribe Campo - Is an Apartment/Condo Complex in Sosua off of Autopista #5. They generally are looking for buyers, but they do rent out apartments for those traveling in the area, even for short visits. Residents have the freedom to come and go as they please. Because families (Ex-pats) live in the complex, don't expect to find hookers working the bars or swimming in the pool. However, who you bring is your guest and is welcome to enjoy the facilities of the complex. 1-bedroom apartment was $50.

Well done reports. Just curious where you stayed as it sounded like you were pleased in both cases.

If you have a nice place with a maid and cook, and if you have an extra room in your house, apt. or condo that I can lease for several months I would really appreciate it. I want to come to the D.R. from the states for a nice change. I am a bachelor and like that D.R. women are beautiful, plentiful, and aim to please. I am a good sport, low key, no trouble, and financially secure. If you don't have the maid/cook thing going let me know and maybe we can work something out.
Respectfully,
C.

Posts: 88A great time at ElCaucho
I just returned from 1 week in BC. I went there with a SCUBA buddy and ISG member (Diver Up). Our goal was to get some diving in as well as score some chicas. I can tell you all that we had a great time at both activities.
We stayed at the ElCaucho. Those of you that have stayed there know how the place is, and how friendly the owners are in providing excellent customer service. For those who have not, the complex has a quaint but small resort style. The rooms are arranged around a pool area. I front of the complex is a bar/covered patio area where most of the socializing takes place. This is where the in house chicas are located. They will not approach you. You must make the first move. There is a good variety of girls in various shapes and sizes. They are very friendly and sweet. The going rate is 1000-1500 ST. LT is probably somewhat higher, but I can't verify since I did not partake.
Also located in the front is a seperate building with a restaurant on the second floor above a first flor kitchen. The food is very good and priced fairly.
The strongest and best feature of this hotel is the attitude of the owners. These guys (Francesco and Abbey) will go above and beyond your expectations to insure that you have a good time. I compare it to like staying with family.
The scene on Duarte is livelier than it was last year. There are a few more clubs open, and the girls are easy and plentiful. If for some reason you don't like what you see there, you can always go for one of the in house girls at ElCaucho.
I met a lot of good people there and made some friendships that i know will last.
My buddy and I had a great time both diving and chica hunting.
BC is far from dead, and I can't wait until my next trip. Unfortunately I can't pull this off until next year.
I don't have any pics since I don't have the technical hardware.
I hope that this info is helpful. Keep it safe.
