Downtown Puerto Plata, there is a Local place called Los Maria, more a Merenge type bar were locals go.

I only have a superficial knowledge of Puerto Plata (though I hope to eventually become an expert after I move there shortly) but I would be very surprised if that place still existed as I have never heard of it. Three years in the DR is like three decades in the US or UK when it comes to businesses opening or closing.

I have recently heard of a good new bar near La Javilla which I suspect is the former Galactica re-opened under another name. Anyone have better info?

And those other places you wrote about in the past, the local places near the docks (or port).

Those three bars close to each other in the street called Pentración al Muelle (near the junction with the main highway to Santiago and the opposite end of that street from the docks) couldn't be more different from Cristals. Small, crowded at night, a few ugly chicas which might appeal to Dominicans but with a very occasional diamond in the rough. And cheap - 300 salida and 800 short-time is the gringo price (rather different to Cristals!). I once paid 200+600 which is the local price. One is called Ilusion, one is El Consulador, cannot remember the name of the third.

Just got back from BB's on the 4th weekend. I saw some past friends and met some nice gentlemen from the board. Once again a great trip, I really like BB's, its just perfect for what I like. The staff and ladies are great for what has to be a tough job. My trip is typical of the other reports that have been written in the last few posts.

I did have a bad experience with Cristal's. Myself and another gentleman decided to go to El Bohen and Cristal's Sunday night. I knew the girls at BB's wouldn't appreciate us ( hey I cant blame them) taking girls back but after some discussion we decided to bring some girls back to BB's anyways. We should of just stayed there. We went to both places and decided to pick two girls from Cristal's. We payed the 140 dollars (5000 pesos) and got in a cab and went back to BB's. The first thing that went wrong was that damn security guard was nowhere to be found, we were standing around looking for somebody to give their ID's to, which wasn't ideal. Finally we just said hell with it and went up to our rooms without the girls seeing security. The session was good but about an hour and a half into it I heard a ton of commotion coming from outside. Well I don't speak Spanish but I knew it wasn't good and since I never heard that before at BB's I knew it had to be the other Cristal's girl. About 5 minutes later I got the security guy banging on my door and the other girl running into my room and everybody is speaking Spanish so I have no idea what is going on and within another 2 minutes they were heading out. Apparently the other gentleman and girl got into mini-argument or she just was ripping him off and wasn't going to stay. Not sure how security found my room. But hey I learned an expensive lesson between Cab, girl fee's, beer prices at those places, etc.

It was late (maybe 2:00AM) so myself and the other gentleman grabbed a few beers from our fridge and went down stairs. It was my last night so I wasn't happy....and just then one of my favorite BB girls was still around and she asked if I wanted her to stay all night. So I took her up on the offer. She gave us some good-natured kidding about bring in outside girls and our experience, she had both of us laughing our ass off. I remembered why I like BB's so much because of awesome girls like her.

Well, the obvious one is El Bohen. Pricing similar to Cristal but IMHO nowhere near as nice an atmosphere. I think the physical L-shape of the place is partly responsible.

Downtown Puerto Plata, there is a Local place called Los Maria, more a Merenge type bar were locals go. 2 Bouncers with metal detectors at the door. Had a good choice of girls when I went there, but that was 3 years ago. You can dance with the girls before making your choice, if you can do a decent merenge or other latin dance you will earns a high level of brownie points with the girls.

-If you don't speak Spanish, you will need a translator. Other recommendations, I personally wouldn't go alone and don't do the mistake that I did at the time to spend the night there, if one suit you, pay your bar fine, and bring her at your place.

-Don't know if the young taxi-cab driver who brought me there still work, but send me a P.M. and I will give you his coordonate ( name and phone # )

I am 4 days away from my return to POP/Sosua after a 7 month hiatus (that's a long time for me!). I've just got a couple of quick questions, the answers to which I have forgotten as a result of my stints in Rio, Bogota and Medellin over the past months.

1. What time does Cristal's open and when is the best time to go? Is the price the same for all girls (about $140 with the exit fee) or does it vary? I've taken out from there 3 or 4 times, I just can't remember!

2. Ocean World Casino and disco. Do any of the pro girls hang out there or just vacationing foreigners? Has anyone had any luck there? At what rate? I've only been here once, ironically, with a girl I picked up from Cristal's!

I just returned this week from a trip for 6 nights in the DR of which 3 nights were at BB and 3 nights at FOD which makes it my second visit to both places in the past 3 months. I have been to BBs 15 times over the past 4 years. Quick opinion is that I continue to like both places which have pros and cons but to me are both better than trolling for talent in Sosua. I am planning on another week trip Aug 2-9 and I will again split my time. I like a number of chicas at BBs who do not really work elsewhere and I like a lot of chicas at FOD who either used to work at BBs but prefer not to or have been pushed out.

At BBs there is no doubt that John has been improving the infrastructure. However the fact that the pool was empty during my last stay (which was very hot days) was a major disappointment, esp as repairs seems to going very slowly but I understand it is now fixed. Otherwise, I noticed new AC units, new upholstery, a bit better food and they have now converted the large suites on the first floor to true 2 bedroom units by enclosing the second bed and giving it AC. As for chicas, there are lots of new ones, generally slimmer than the past and lots of good selection. Prices went up to 1500 pesos short time and 3000 TLN but that is still very reasonable in my view. John at BB is seeking to have more new talent present at BB as well as push out girls that have gotten a bit heavy. I agree with the focus on thin (flaca) chicas but I do miss many of my old favorites at BB. However, if you know an outside girl you can bring them into BB for the night as long as they were not banned in the past for major violations like drugs etc.

Girls at BB. My favorite there is Maria Isabelle who I spent 3 nights with. While maybe a 7-8 for looks and slightly older than some, she gets a 10+ for attitude. Very energetic, the best DFK in my life and most things are on the menu. I also saw a new 19 yr old girl called Wendy who has no kids (a rarity) and could be one of the most beautiful girls ever at BB. Very new and very timid so needs to loosen up but the body was smoking. Also some of the new BB girls now want to do a CBJ which is the first time I have seen that ever at BB. If this is an issue for you ask in advance. Also did several short times with a girl named Aleima (Aly for short) who was also 19 or 20 and smoking hot like Wendy but much more animated in bed than Wendy. No CBJ and very receptive to all types of activity even though she had only been there a few weeks. The mamasans (Luchy and Rosalba) are very helpful if you need it. There is a bit of grousing by the girls about the fines if they miss a meeting or scheduled work day but that is par for the course. I think the criticism I have seen mooted on this board and others about the BB's new rules for chicas etc is overstated. The reality is that the place runs well.

After 3 nights at BB, I moved to FOD. Since I rent a car every trip (as I think anyone who come here should do given the cost of taxis) the purported "isolation" of the place is not an issue. It is isolated only if you are on foot. If you have a car it is SUBSTANTIALLY more convenient for access to Sosua, Puerto Plata, Cabarete and Playa Dorado than BB’s in Costambar which is a well to the west of the city and away down a very bad road. A much better beach than Costambar is very close as is Playa Dorado’s golf course and discos. In fact I consider it a plus that people rarely just wander by for a visit as is the case in BB where anyone from Costambar can enter and eat and drink. It makes FOD more private than BB which means playing around with the chicas in the pool or Jacuzzi is no problem at all. The girls are frequently topless which is fine. In fact that lack of picky rules is one of the pluses about FOD. The place is also reasonably busy – each time I was there 50-75% of the 18 rooms were occupied and early in one week FOD had 3x as many guests as BBs which was nearly empty.

At FOD there is no set schedule for the chicas and no organized activities like disco and volleyball as at BB. The mamasan is named Angelina and she is there everyday and generally makes sure that there are chicas around during the day sufficient for the number of guests. Many guests at FOD make their own chica arrangements or go to Sosua so the number of chicas "hanging" at FOD declines earlier in evening than at BB. So if you find something you like during the day, take her for the night. The girls only pay Angelina if they have a client and it is something like 200 pesos for short time and 300 for the night.

Other aspects of FOD vs BB:

- Rooms are similar clean to BB but most are smaller and cheaper at only $47. The FOD suites are excellent and many similar priced rooms at BB. They cost $70 to 110. FOD has nice flat screen TV’s in many rooms, electricity is more reliable (across from Playa Dorado helps! ), and the water pressure and hot water is excellent (much better than BB). Alberto, the owner has been doing a lot of improvements to the facility.

- Pool and Jacuzzi. FOD pool is nicer than BB’s mostly because of its waterfall and the fact that chicas can swim topless. There are also a few comfy lounge beds around the pool which are great for some discrete foreplay with the chicas. BB’s Jacuzzi is better than FOD as it is bigger and more private and has more jets and bubbles. Alberto is talking about enclosing the FOD Jacuzzi which would be good.

- Bar and Food. The bar at FOD is very nice with granite tops, flat screen TVs and nice stools and tables, strong internet access both wireless and via two machines. The BB bar generally has more going on with locals drinking there. In terms of food, BB is superior. FOD food is quite good and prices similar to BBs but the menu is more limited.

I was with 2-3 chicas everyday I was at FOD including 2 different ones for TLN. Prices are pretty much the same as BB (I never discussed prices with the girls and just paid them the 1500/3000 BB levels and they were very happy. I also bought drinks and food for them. About half of the chicas I saw there were former BB chicas who left on their own or were pushed out recently. This includes several that I know and like such as Elizabeth (Baby), Wendy, Jacqueline, India, Santa, Morena, Jennifer, Josie and Serina. I spent two nights with Elizabeth who is my favorite and one night with Wendy. Both were outstanding with very hot bodies and totally enthusiastic attitudes. Wendy is a total sex maniac. There are also lots of other chicas there and I did short times with Rosa (mid 20s, very fit body and everything on the menu), Angela (20yr old and super hot but a bit more timid and new) and another girl named Jara I think who was late 20s but super enthusiastic. My impression is the chicas at FOD are less restrictive than some at BB as no one at FOD wanted to give a CBJ.

I would encourage regular visitors of BB’s to at least try FOD for a few days taking note of my points above. It is of benefit to all mongers to support two businesses of this type in Puerto Plata.

Thanks, JPYank, for your very thoughtful, detailed and balanced review of Barba Negra and Field of Dreams. I entirely agree with your conclusion that it is in our interests to support both places. Although they offer slightly different experiences they are obviously in competition and the competition is working in that both owners are constantly improving their premises.

I hope your comments about cars at Field of Dreams will not deter those like me who are nervous about driving in the DR. I have stayed at Field of Dreams many times (once for an eleven-week stretch) and never found the lack of my own transport any handicap as it is a three-minute walk to the main highway and public transport is frequent, fast and cheap.

I can see that a car might be more necessary at Barba Negra but then there is so much going on there that short-stay guys may not feel the urge to go off campus.

Just got back from a 6 day/5 night trip to the Dominican and the North Coast. I broke the trip up a bit this time and checked out a few places for my next vacation down here. I settled on 2 nights at Blackbeard’s and 3 with the novia for this trip. The following are some of my experiences and observations.

First off, the trip down was amazing. I checked in the airport and there was almost no line. The first leg of my flight to Newark left on time and no weather concerns. I was near the front of the plane and was one of the first down the corridor to customs and baggage claim. The cheesy Caribbean trio started playing as I rounded the corner and a huge smile came across my face. I got out a dollar bill out of my pocket and put it in the tip bin. I felt like I was finally home. I was the second person to the tourist card lady; made some small talk with her in Spanish and paid her $10 (I had heard it was now $15. Maybe a little small talk goes a long way). I then walked thirty paces to the guy who takes that same card away from you. It always struck me as a dumb thing, to buy a tourist card from one person only to have it taken away by someone else a few paces down. Welcome to the Dominican Republic!! I could not believe it; my luggage was just coming out the carousel as I was making my way into the baggage claim area. My bag was the third one out the shoot and I picked it up and never broke stride. I walked past the guy at customs, faking that I could lift it up my bag to his table as he waved me through. No-one was at the rental car counter and the girl who does the paperwork was efficient and I was done in no time. Gave the guy who looks for scratches and dents on the rental car a couple bucks to do a good job (it is amazing how many more scratches and dings they find when you give them a couple bucks tip) and I was driving out of the airport in less than 30 minutes from when the plane touched down.

I went to Sosua first, to check out a couple places, get a drink at Rocky’s and got on the internet. I then walked around to see what my best exchange rate would be and used a tried and true Dominican negotiation tactic; say no to the first offer, then the second and then finally seeing what they do to make a better deal. The best price I got was .2 pesos per dollar less than the official bank rate and I exchanged a couple hundred bucks. I walked over to La Passions to scope the place out and thought a nice massage or soapie with a happy ending might be a good way to start the trip off. Had a Presidente there and talked to a couple chicas in their schoolgirl outfits (very nice!), but they didn’t get my juices going so I passed. One day I would like to go there when a good crew of girls is there and see how things go. I made my way to the beach and the place was almost deserted. I got accosted by the street vendors and headed back to town. Went over to the New Garden to check out the accommodations and was able to see a room in the old building. Basic accommodations there, but nice. It was a little after 2:30 in the afternoon and there were about six chicas at the small bar area plying their trade. Found it easy to say no as I was not staying there and there was only one chica there that even peaked my interest. I only saw 3 or 4 chicas walking around or at the bars on the main drag, but I did run into two transvestites. Lovely.

Left Sosua and stopped at Caribe Tours to check on cambio rates on my way out of Sosua and found their rate only slightly better at .15 less than the official bank exchange rates. I then drove down the road towards Costambar. By the way, Jenny’s Market was the same exchange rate, at .15 under and I saw no other cambio better than that during my stay.

I wanted to check out the Field of Dreams hotel, so I stopped in and talked to Franklin there. He showed me a suite and then I went to the bar area. There were about 6 or so chicas there, 3 of which I remembered from BBs and they remembered me. There were a couple nice chicas, but nothing to write home about. To be fair, this is the afternoon and I have no idea what it is like in the evening. I discussed price and they were similar to BBs. Rooms were available and the accommodations were very nice.

I got into BBs a little after 4 and got a room in the D section, above the office and bar, near the disco. This was my first time for a room in this building, and although the room was very nice, I hope this is my last time in this building. I had been up since 4am and hoped to have an early night. This was a weekend night and the disco was open until 1. There is no way not to hear the music in these rooms from the Disco if you stay in the D section. I was a bit more tired than I wanted to be that night, but I survived. I picked out a little firecracker earlier in the night for TLN named Elizabet and I was quite happy.

There are definitely some changes at BBs. As has been reported, chicas are now 1500 pesos ST and 3000 TLN. There are a lot of new girls here from my last stay in December, and quite a few familiar faces. The new rules on set schedules (afternoon 11am to 6pm or evening 6pm to midnight), missing scheduled days (1000 pesos fine per offence) and exit fees (800 pesos for those wanting chica take out and not staying at BBs) has weeded out a lot of chicas who were used to the old ways of doing things. The chicas do seem to be as content as can be, considering they work in a wh*rehouse. BBs no longer gives you a sheet coming in explaining things, but rather have a small book with all the info including tours, rules for customers and of course, chica menu prices. Girl on girl action with happy hour has been added to the menu (300 pesos per chica) and Jacuzzi action is negotiable, but carries a price.

The new generator is a welcome sight for those in the main building and now having air conditioning all day and night. Much of the restaurant and in room furniture has been freshened up. New paint everywhere and the waitresses are trying to learn how to deal with the menu in English. Water pressure is still an issue as if a couple people use it at the same time to shower, it slows to a trickle. There is hot water sometimes and sometimes not. The pool has been newly painted and refilled and the place looks as good as I have ever seen it. Deluxe Doubles now have a wall partitioning off the second bedroom and has air conditioning in the second smaller room.

The chicas seem to be a little more savvy and professional than on previous trips as to how to work a guy for stuff, but this may be as much to the luck of the draw as anything, as I talked to only a portion of them on my two night stay. The Bikini Contest seems to promote more wild activity than in the past and it is the same in the disco. CBJ vs. BBBJ was my experience in “mi cama”, but then again I was only there two nights and maybe that skewed things a bit.

I checked into some apartments with a kitchen set up and 24 hour electricity for my next trip down with the novia. Hotels are OK, but I wouldn’t mind trying this out next time down. I am astonished how word spreads in the small village area where my novia lives that I am her novio and I am in town. I am quite recognizable to people in the area as the “rich gringo novio” and everyone takes their turn hitting my novia up for something when they know I am coming down. I think gossiping is the number one pastime for many in the small village as there is nothing much else going on there. Everyone knows everyone else’s business.

I am attaching some of the pages from BBs welcome book showing some info. I hope it shows up OK as a smaller jpeg as an attachment.

That is about all I have to report on and I enjoyed myself totally. I am trying to take the “novia/novio” thing slowly, but I do find my time with her intoxicating. Having my cake and eating it too is still a new experience for me.

I was just at BB's, 5-8 July.

Nothing has changed as far as great service and great chica's.

But some of the staff and chica's has changed. Many of the very familiar chica's have gone and there are new ones in to replace them. The Mamasan's do a great job with handling the girls and there are chica activites almost every night, ie- bikini volleyball. During the day the girls would get into their bikini's for an afternoon swim in the new pool.

The chica prices have increased slightly, about $3-5 USD, not much at all.

The resturant is the same, there are new flat screen TV's in the common area's.

I meet some old friends and as always made some new ones and again, as always, there were a guest or two to stay away from.

There is a policy in place concerning video and picture taking which is probably due to the recent youtube video.

I expect to return in August and will always go to BB's.

I drove by FOD several times and from what you can see from the street, it looked very quiet, as compared to at BB's where there are always cars and scooters parked outside.

IMHO, FOD is out in the middle of no where unless you want to walk over to the huge resort across the street. But I would think twice before attempting to cross that street.

The BB's neighborhood hasn't changed at all.
