There is a pharmacy inside La Sirena. You can buy LaPela or Mambo, which are generic forms of Cialis. You can also get generic Viagra (sildenafil). The prices are not particularly cheap but about the same as all the other pharmacies in Puerto Plata-though probably cheap by US standards, and right there for you to find. The only place I know that has this stuff really, really cheap is Latino Minimarket in Sosua. There are pharmacies on every street corner in Puerto Plata, but no great deals, I don't think.

1. Thanks! The point of potentially becoming a mark for a private taxi guy is a good point. I will avoid that option.

2. Re being too 'rich' to use private taxis? WTF, I have a bunch of luggage. Laptop, ipad etc as well. I can't use a bus or a publico due to my need for space for luggage etc.

3. If a guy is buying a flight, and spending a whole bunch of money on hotels and chicas, then the incremental $100-$130 spent over 4 weeks, I think, as a percentage of total, is not that big a percentage. Also, please remember that unlike many here, I am new to all this, after having recently gone thru a divorce after 20-25 years of married life, and total focus on work and other things besides this. So, in terms of money spent on this kind of stuff, cumulatively over the years, you might still have me beat! In any event, I expect to only live once, and give my over 50 status, I am not going to wait any longer. That is just FYI, FWIW.

For example, Pto Pta to Sosua is 45 pesos whereas a private taxi would cost in the upper hundreds. The downside is they squeeze two passengers in the front bucket seat meant for one, and four passengers on the bench seat at back meant for three. You can overcome this if you board at a terminus by paying for two adjacent seats (still a very cheap ride). If you hail them mid-route you are unlikely to get this option and will have to squeeze in.

I know one in Pto Pta. But if you use the same guy everywhere from Costambar through to Cabarete (a thirty mile stretch) you will be paying a lot more because he will have to do a return trip from his home to wherever you are before he starts work and will charge you for that time and gas. Plus he will forever turn up late. I really cannot see any advantage in it. In one of my previous posts I advised not to get any closer to Dominicans than you have to. You are just a mark to them.

What exactly is a dedicated publico?

If you go to the terminus in Pto Pta or in Sosua you can negotiate a price for them to take only you to your specific destination. Specify they are not to stop for other passengers (except shapely chicas). The price is about half what a private taxi would charge but still double what they would make by filling their cab with passengers, so they are usually willing. The downside is the cars are usually clapped-out old heaps but you are not trying to impress anyone (I hope). If the chica sees you arrive in one of these she will know you are not some dumb, rich tourist pendejo and that you know the score here.

I don't think they are allowed into Playa Dorada (but could be wrong) but you haven't mentioned going from Sosua into Playa Dorada so that should not be a problem.

Do you know of a good, honest private driver with his own car who might me a better alternative? Then I can stick with one guy!

Are you familiar with the district of Miraflores near the edge of the cliff known as "El Malecon"? That is where one of my buddies has been living for the last 3 years. He told me there are sexy chicas in Peru of many mixes and most of them are very attracted to white foreigners. According to him, finding a Peruvian girl to fuck as a white foreigner is like shooting fish in a barrel, particularly in the clubs, bars, penas (live interactive music party's) , beaches (summer-especially the southern beaches are fuck fests) , and central downtown Lima.

I've also heard that many people in the high end districts speak fairly good english and the women love communicating in english there with english speaking natives. I've never been to Peru so I wouldn't know, but I was thinking that you might offer another opinion of how women, in general, treated you there. If you had noticed anything? Basically you said it gets you in the front door.

I've heard some white guys say that Peru is a goldmine for white guys.

We all know there is plenty of racism in Latin America, and Peru is no exception. Many times women have made comments about my eyes (kind of greenish) , hair color, and skin (pretty darn white, and I don't ever try to tan due to skin cancer issues in the family). There are lots of rumors about this. However, I don't think there are too many women anywhere who will base any kind of serious relationship simply on race. In other words, it might get your foot in the door, but after that it's all about your personal chemistry.

I traveled with a black guy for several years, and he did get treated differently in some places. However, in Brazil he got the royal treatment and I was only tolerated. So he got even with me there! LOL Because he was much more personable than me, he usually was able to get a lot friendlier a lot faster when we stayed anywhere for a week or so, and the women had more fun with him than me. I tried to take lessons but you can't change basic personality types. I call myself El Lobo Solo for a reason!

Looks like $850 per month will get you a lot! Questions; I have a big parsola. I'm good on it. Is it safe to drive this from Cofresi to P. P? Girls? Tell me all you can. BTW I've lived in at Infiit-Blu Sosua for the last three months, so I know all about the girls mentalities. Not looking for advice there. Just: locations, safety, quantity and quality? Also I really like to snorkel and fish, so, how is that Cofresi beach and other playas for clear water to snorkel, and how is the fishing? Price? Quality?

Hi Gary.

I pay US$235 for a three-bedroom apartment in an OK location in Puerto Plata so you should get a palace for US$850.

I wouldn't fancy driving a pasola (note spelling) along the main highway myself, but it should be safe enough in the daytime. Suicidal at night, though, from both a traffic and robbery point of view.

What attracts you to Cofresi in particular?

I imagine the main reason you would want to go into Pto Pta is for shopping, and for that you might prefer to take a taxi for your weekly needs. But when going in and out unloaded, you could take the guagua or publico unless you live too far from the main road. And if going in at night for the night-life (what little there is of it) you definitely don't want a pasola.

Cofresi is a relatively affluent area, but the stretch between it and Pto Pta is a bit desolate with not many people about.

I am happy to hear you enjoyed your stay in Sosua long enough to want to continue living on the North Coast.

My comment about defending myself was for when I'll be walking with a walker. In some places in the USA that is asking for trouble, and I'm sure that's just as true in the DR.

There are a couple of guys in Sosua who are in wheelchairs, but seem to get around OK and accepted as part of the community. Also a couple of Dominican guys in wheelchairs usually collecting money in a cup outside the pharmacy. Again, they seem to be treated with respect.
