Will be at Blackbeards June 17-22.

Will the girls take American money, or is it better to exchange?

You might also try La Roca. It's the newest cabana and a little closer to town.

Sencation or Sensation,,,,,,,,,, something like that. It is a small hotel with cabanas in the rear. The hotel has nice rooms and they also have a small pool. The hotel is a few minutes ride past Rancho Tipico.

If you want to be in Puerto Plata city try Apart Hotel Lomar.

Here is a link with a few other hotels.

    This should not happen!

this is the type of thing that gives latin america a bad name and a big reason why more people don't come here. clearly, some of the folks involved just saw this as a money-making opportunity.

as i read it, i hated the fact that it was happening to another gringo. there but for the grace of god . . .

well, i've lived here in puerto plata for 3 years, know many of the players, and speak spanish. if any of you english-speakers ever get in a jam like this, please call on me. i'm not a lawyer, bail bondsman, or policeman, but i know some resources to call. keep my phone number in your wallet -- it's (829)969-8687. i'll be happy to help, and there will be no charge.

nice truck honda element black looked customized even weyland said nice truck. anyway me and my wingman were driving on malecon in pop heading towards lasirena we had just ate there and i had a coke which is unusual for me but its really hot there that friday. two girls were at a beach bar waiting for us but i didn't see them i was driving don't need extra distractions. i need to turn around so cars coming i am waiting to clear i am right on yellow line waiting for oncoming traffic noone on my right no one on the road that direction. road clears turn left and smash a motoconcho hits the truck. my "friend" screams like a 10 year old school girl. i immediately get out of truck to check on victims they got hit pretty hard. i thought they were dead the girls head had a lump but no major blood anywhere. i was very concerned for them even though they were speeding like hell and passed me on wrong side of road they were hurt. a crowd soon gathered some asked me what happened i calmly explained. i looked for my "friend" and he is nowhere to be found no where. a bystander called police with cell phone and jason maloon the representative of adventure rental car. i ask numerous people where is my "friend" noone knows. believe me i looked hard i had nothing else to do but i did not leave scene of accident. the victims dissapeared also along with the victims motorcycle. one guy says my "friend" went to hospital with victims. i thought that was quite humble of him. police show up 45 minutes after accident so its 1:30 pm or so. my "friend " reappears he looks like he was crying and scared. get into car to go to police station near harbor while getting in car jason from adventure finally shows up. on way to police station my "friend" explains he don't like blood that is why he left. i knew better he ran away like a scared little school girl after he screamed. get to station wait there jason says i take care of you i will take care everything. victims family shows up they look a little mad but relize i am concerned too. i don't talk much and remain calm. the family understands it was accident i certainly didn't see them on my left large blind spot in that suv. jason says don'y worry i am here i will take care of you whole thing will be couple hundred dollars. he says don't tell anyone but you have 8000 pesos i will pay police chief and you will be ok. i don't have that much on me so i ask my "friend" for 1000 pesos more. we wait for long time 2 hours for paperwork and such so i think be all over after paying money. my "friend" starts whining like a little girl "i want to go to herman's for a chica i don't see why i should be stuck waiting for you its like when people are dying in hospital i am not going to spend a month next to their bed what do i have to do with this your fault your fault! then he says yea i saw that motorcyle on your left but don't worry i won't say anything " like he is doing me some kind of favor? i wanted to ***** slap him. he is a i already told police what happened. i say i need you here i do not know how this is going to turn out i may get throw in jail and you will be only one on planet who knows where i am. he says" no no jason is good guy he will take care of you you don't need me. ain't my fault ain't my fault you should have seen him you were driving. i paid for rental car all gas and his hotel room and he is my wingman "friend'' you would think the ungrateful fucker would wait for me after running off leaving me for lynch mob and after all you never ever leave your wingman ever in a vulnerable place. i finally say ok cause i think i am ready to kick his ass anyway. i asked jason is "friend" use car and go to hotel for passport and credit card. i already gave him my room key digital camera i tell him get my stuff come back and you can go. he leaves jason says oh have to go to judge for trial right now going to take more money for hospital. i call my "friend" on telephone empty my hotel room of all my belongings in case they decide take my things and get my money, debit card and passport but don't give to anyone for any reason he said ok.

i get to the other police station down by park and get into station and meet adventure's attorney respresenting me. the deductable is 3000 us deductable but i think he should get paid by them but quite frankly i am getting bad feeling about this just trying to think ahead of them. attorney said "no problem" i am respresenting you i am for you.

the entrance to police station is where is desk 3 cops one cop instructs me step behind door it is a prison cell with women in there. i ask attorney what is going on? he say no problem its just for minute. cop points at shoes and argue swith me about something attorney says take off shoe laces. ding ding ding light goes off in my head i am going to jail! never been jail before and that is unusual for my area and michigan child support domestic violence laws. i call my "friend" and said listen i am going to jail phone gets quiet i say are you there? you joking? no. i am going to jail. at this time i am thinking thanks for leaving me assole. i tell him" my life is in your hands" who is going to have your phone jason the adventure rental agent with my money 100 us dollars some pesos and i count it. i hear some screaming as taking shoe laces and look over and see 20 men most all naked with their penisis exposed hollering gringo gringo. i almost flicked them off and asked if they wanted to fight but didn't. 10 seconds later i am in cell with them. honestly wasn't scared but was hot as hell don't know temperature but hottest ever been in my life lets just give it 100 degrees and humidity to match even dominicans didn't have clothes on and were panting. in i go i figure i can knock out 2 or 3 of them but not 20 so better stay calm. into cell all the way to back its body to body they swarm to me the uglier looking ones tried to intimidate me said don't be scared i wasn't scared the heat was fucking unbearable. i told them not scared just hot two 3 them put hands on my cargo shorts and fondle my pockets a little ask have money i said no police robb me. kept hands to themselves then ask why i am in jail i respond no idea. i tell them soy innocente they all say almost in sequence tambien. i am innocent they say me too and . . ..

    Watch those left turns!

It's worth noting if you ever drive in the DR, when turning left don't just wait for oncoming traffic to clear check for idiots trying to pass you on the left.
Exactly as above, I was turning left and moto was playing Super Mario Bros Bike through heavy city traffic. He hit my door and went flying through the air. He must have been going about 40mph.

Fortunately it was right in front of a clinic in the town of Esperanza. They patched up his broken arm, and leg. I paid 70% of the cost plus the damage to my car. Even the family of the moto guy didn't want to involve the police.

Now I just assume some idiot will try to pass my on the left when I make a left turn, so I check the rear view every time.

That's 4 days and 3 nights. You should have time enough to work in trips to Sosua and/or Puerto Plata nightclubs. You can do it on your own, with a friend, or by using my tour: www.themantour.net

Also, The Man Tour now has a hotel. I will be announcing details here shortly. It's another option people now have to BBs and FOD. Check it out at www.themanhotel.com

Have not been to Charlis, but am familiar. There were 3 similar resorts which all operate essentially the same with same experience - Euro girls (primarily from Ukraine and Russia), all-inclusive, etc. Vikings (now closed) and Exoticretreat (http://exoticretreat.net) are the other 2.

Trippster wrote a very extensive report on viking that is very useful and mirrors the experience at the others.

Expats usually know the right people to call and get out of a jam, when a tourist doesn't know anyone. Everybody knows a Colonel and treat him to gifts like a bottle of Johnny Walker Black and other things. During my time in Sosua, I knew all of the police and would take of them with gifts when I travelled back from the states and they considered me a friend and if I ever had a problem, call them. It won't take much RD$300 here and there, buying a couple of beers when you see them in a bar.

Another problem is that tourists with there limited or no spanish can't explain themselves out of a situation. So the motoconcho will be the only one explaining his story to the cops and blaming you. Liability insurance do exist in the DR and they do pay out! But dominicans rather have the cash in hand.
I second that, in this country it does not matter what you know, it is all about who you know. In the past when i had a problem with the police ( when they tried to pull me over for no reason for example) i handed them business cards of people i know or i called my novias dad who is coronel en el ejercito nacional y asi el problema se acacbo.

No one said tell the world you are a monger in rep dom. There are plenty of tell tale signs that give you away. You can say you are visiting a girlfriend but don't be fooled LE would know the real deal.

Sure the locals are big mongers,,,,,,,,,,,, but you are NOT a local. Makes a huge difference.

    Exactly.
I always look now (in the DR) and also start to slowly angle the car so they can see it coming a long way off.

Right off the bat a monger has three or four strikes against him. If I were a Dominican LE I am not sure I would be so pleased to see someone who just comes to my country to fiki fiki my niece, cousins, and maybe even my daughter.

For the life of me I can't imagine someone staying at Casa de Campo on a golfing trip get into an accident and get treated to the 10X10 cell treatment. Just can't see it.
