Reality, Im also from Puerto Rico, I ussually take the American Eagle flights to Santo Domingo, they are cheaper than the Puerto Plata flights. At Santo Domingo I take the Caribe Tour Buses to Puerto Plata, they are Air conditioned Bus with TV and very comfortable, they depart every hour. Bus fare to Puerto Plata is around $7 dollars.

after reading some short stories on the wsgforum and spelling the bb website i took the plunge and went for a late november week break to bb.

after 12hrs flying from amsterdam holland i arived on the airport where the promised taxi was allready waiting for me! a 30min trip would bring me to bb.
the resort emerged as a small tastefull gemm in the middle of nowhere and very close to the waterfront.

the resort (i would use private resort, it's small and cosy) welcomes you with a good warm vibrato knowing you are on the right spot right now! it has a real friendly open, modern style, everything looks "allmost" new or well maintained.

to the room i had to cross bb's beautifull two legged flowergarden with a wide variety of species every time suprising with new spicy flavours and friendly colours.

the single deluxe room suprised me as being tastefull, clean, roomy, with a real good bed! and of course, ac,tv, bathroom, safebox!

after freshing up i went down to take another peak in the flower garden. to my surprise, no-body was pushy, just plain friendly and wanted to know if i had a good flight etc... somehow it clicked with me and actually the first girl i spoke tooo and guess what in english! she would end up staying with me for the rest of the week
i asked here and here friend for diner and went for another extreme good surprise... the food!

do not expect haute cuisine (go for france if ya want that), but good honest tasty spicy caribean style food. i've checked out a big part of the menu in the week and did not have bad surprises at all (not after to which tells me it's like the rooms in that kitchen "clean").

after this we relaxed. and again what's most noticeable is the allmost family atmosphere of relax and no pressure. in holland we would characterize it a little bit like a brown cafe or an irish pub. untill someone puts on "gasolina" then you will now pretty fast what caribean bubbling style dancing is (after you peeled youre eyes from your sun-glasses of course) and made a reservation for the washing machine ;-)

the rooms seem to be good insulated as well (well c-5, is), i did not hear anybody sporting, nor got complaints if i did, only some music. so we had a good night rest and even better wake up by a rooster... i took a cold one from the mini-bar in the room, my eye spotted the price list, less than 1usd, and i had to smile... a mini bar which will not kill ya wallet!

the breakfast enclosed a nice surprise again. of course the tortilla was good, but oh man decent coffee! and no problemo if you take a refill. thats what i call service which counts ands makes me smile and come back for more.

reading a book in the morning near the pool i was surprised by the tranquility of the place, no children running around, most people just relax, the stereo is the only thing you hear. very good to unwind and build up some energy for later ;-)).

around noon the flower garden seems to grow again showing new variety every day untill 9pm when only some night creatures stay. beware for "gasolina"!. some local expats seem to have a soft spot for bb too showing the loyal most important friendly visitors which help to make this place so good. it's quite international as a place and somehow it looks like most people can get along allmost instantenous.

i tried snorkling the reef in front of the hotel, but david is right, it's not much fish out there, but a lot of sea-hedgehogs and sea weed in the shallows a strong current at approx 200yards out of the shore, bad visibility and a beach without people make it a little dangerous and futile to do. if you do it, please do it with 2 people. and even better ask david to plan a snorkling trip for you near sosua.

a week went by very fast and my "girlfriend" realy made a huge part of this week but also limited outgoing a bit, so keep that in mind if you go steady.... next year i will go with friends and make sure that i have the first days to give you an update of the excursion options at day and night.

checking out i had the last surprise, the bill.... less than 1k for 7 days, in which we eat and drunk on average with 2.5 people and i had the single deluxe... real your moneys worth.

only regret was leaving the place especially because the bikini contest started at the time i left ;-(( there will be a next year though.

bottom line if you are looking for a friendly peacefull place with an excellent flowergarden which does not want to ambush you! like me hate to sit on top of disco's or be in >100people hotels, get mugged at the check-out etc. then look no further. bb is it! next year i will be back with friend's and i guess it will be more than once.

In only 30 days until I will be in Puerto Plata and Blackbeards. There have not been nearly as many posts about the action in Puerto Plata lately. I enjoy reading about other experiences.

Everyone has a different idea of what a perfect Dominican Republic girl is. This is my idea of the perfect girl. Sometimes the girls want to go to Crystals because they get a kick out of the action. I've had girls take me to El Bohem (best looking girls in Puerto Plata) several times. A girl even took me to El Principe (another strip joint). Also, if the girls are from Puerto Plata they usually know one of the girls in these places. There is even a girl who works both at Blackbeards during the day and Crystals at night. Crystals originally allowed outside girls to go in for free but now they charge the girls an entrance fee. Crystals feels that these girls are taking away business from the girls inside. In Crystals the girls give a show on stage. At El Bohem this happens but not so often. From my experience the girls you take with you usually don't mind these places. They have certainly been there before with some other guy.

Have never tried it. Likely will not. Never know what will happen on a lazy night or for some daytime action. Know that daytime action can be easily found in sosua but getting there from Puerto Plata is still a mystery (i.e. when driving myself). I wouldnt waste any time or MONEY on a this or any agency in the DR. You can see those same girls walking the Long Beach strip, and you can have them for much less than the quoted price. Sept 22 to Sept 26 was my visit to Black Beards and boy what a visit it was.

I live in Puerto Rico so im blessed to know spanish and a plane ride is only an hour to Dominican Rep. Little did i know one of these things wouldnt matter in the slightest.

American Eagle are bastards. Even though i live an hour away from the Dominican Rep by plane the ticket set me back a mugging price of 300 dollars!! the cheap flights are to Santo Domingo but the Santo Domingo Airport is 3 1/2 hours away from the hotel. And i sure as hell wasnt about to take a crummy cab down dirt roads full of pot holes to my hotel. But i had no choice but to pay the ridiculous fare since American Eagle holds a monopoly on the Dominican Rep.

Having been to the Santo Domingo Airport i was ready for swarms of people trying to grab my bags or beg for money. I wasnt prepared for the corruption at the airport. In customs the guard demanded i give my female inspector a tip. Stupidly thinking if i gave her a tip i would be green light, i foolishly gave her 3 dollars. When she saw my laptop she sent me to the manager. A bell boy grabbed my bag without asking me and led me to a room full of nervouse Dominicans. I was told that i had nothing to worry about and i was sent on my way, the bell boy said "See i talked to him thats why he let you go, 5 Dollars please" . That pissed me off, i told him no. He started to argue in which i shoved a dollar in his hand and ran toward my cab. But i wasnt quick enough because another bell boy grabbed my bad and took it toward the curve just a few feet away and held out his hand for a tip. (ARRRRGH!!!)

I was given a chance to relax with the cab Black Beard Arranged. The taxi driver was pleasent and pushy. As we came out of the airport i saw a nice looking dominican girl waiting for the buss in a pink tank top. She smiled at me and waved. I knew i would have a good vacation after that.

The hotel is located just 25 minutes from the airport the drive is mostly straight through. You pass allot of farm land and paved streets but you also notice that the best properties are either European Comunities, European or American Business, Banks, or All Inclusive Hotels. Its almost funny that it on a street youll see beautifull lawn and modern arquitecture of a Bank or whatnot and then next to it will be the lot that wasnt sold, full of garbage or junk. The traffic lights dont work and soon you realize that Dominicans choice of transpertation are dirt bikes. This is because their cheap and not to expensive to repair.

As soon as you pass a Texaco up a head there is a dirt road that is the entrance of Costmbar where the hotel is located. This is a bad road so make sure to brace yourself for a bumpy ride. Once inside Costmbar it feels extremly safe and very friendly. There are a few resturants in the area although i never got to explore Costmbar fully there are more hotels than just black beards, there are also massage theraphy places, farmacies, and anyone willing to sell you anything.

The hotel was smaller than i expected since the pictures make it look so huge. There was no one at the front desk so the bartender (which also is the assistant manager) checked me in. I had orderd a Jacuzzi Suite so i was ploping down 55 dollars per night but i only had it for 2 nights after that i would be sent to a Single Deluxe (45 per night). The Jacuzzi Suite left something to be desired. The room looked like an old attick that was converted to a room. The closet looked pretty cheap and the TV was nailed to the wall and was too far and too small to be seen properly. The Jacuzzi was okay but i had scene better. The Toilet was placed in a weird position it was over looking the Jacuzzi, you had to climb two flights of mini steps to take a [CodeWord140]. No shampoos either.

But hey screw that, the chicas was what i came for! I went down to the bar and nervousely drank a pepsi while i observed the Chicas. Man was i scared, there were a few but most were not pretty. I made nervouse small talk with some guys. And turned down some skanky looking girls. But as i was giving up hope i saw a 7 at the pool, we gave each other looks and when she came out of the pool to go to the bathroom i made sure i was in her way. We made small talk and i nervousely asked her to my room to try my jacuzzi. She was just what i needed. She made me feel relaxed, didnt presure and she gave the best BBBJ i have had. Breakfest is the best, they make some mean eggs and some great sausages. Their snacks are very good. But their burgers are the worst.

Blackbeards is a very relaxed enviorment and since its small your forced to interact with people. Not to mention there are no phones in your room. The only phone is one in the lobby and you have to buy a calling card for a 50 pesos (about a 2.00), 100 Pesos (5.00) or 300 pesos (15.00). But soon i was making friends.

The girls at black beards have two prices. For a short time like probably 3 hours the price is 1500 pesos (50 dollars) for an all nighter full time girl the price is 3000 pesos (100 Dollars). I know what your thinking get the 100 dollar special you save money. Not really, when you pick one of those girls you have to feed them, buy them drinks and becarefull if their friends dont want to join in the fun.

My friends made me wait for them they wanted to head to Crystals. So as i waited i saw Angelis at the bar. She had the best looking breats i had ever scene. So i asked her upstairs to do some checking. I soon regreated that. Angelis was an alcholic it seemded. She wasnt interested in me or was two drunk to care and it showed. She took a swig of her drink before she climbed into bed with me (not a turn on). So i tried to finish quickly so i could quick her out. After a while i finally did and showed her out.

I came down to find my friends looking for me, and we headed out to Crystals. Taxi Fare was cheap as hell 15 dollars and he stayed with us as long as we wanted. We headed toward Crystals, which had more Neon than vegas. Man was it huge, it had so many girls i got dizzy, we were attacked by hungry girls. But i managed to wiggle free. But I soon learned this wasnt like Black Beards.

Girls cost 3000 pesos plus a bar fee of 1500. You can negotiate but at that time i had no skills. I soon realized that the dollar fluxuated every place we moved. Sometimes it was 36 pesos for every dollar, then 35, 34 and in some places 31. The trick is to exchange for pesos. The best way to do this is to use the ATMS they have the set fee of Pesos/Dollars every month. So if the dollar started out at 36 and two weeks later lowered to 31 it wouldnt matter because the machine is set monthly.

I never came home with anything from Crystals, i felt too presured and wanted to head back to the hotel. The next day i realized anothe flaw of Blackbeards.......boredom. The good looking girls arraive after 3:00 before that you have skanks and silence. You could go to the beach but its either mostly deserted or you have people occasionaly trying to sell you stuff. So most of the days i spent my time snacking or relaxing in the outdoor Jacuzzi (which is awsome), watching TV (it got better once i moved to my deluxe suite) or walking around the neighboorhood (great italian resturant up the block).

The brought back a girl from El Bohem once, she got checked for her ID the guard held her for a few minutes before she explained that he was reading the right ID so sometimes theres a little friction because they have to make sure they have theyre Celulas (Clean Health Certificate on the IDS) and over 18.

BRING CONDOM!!! I ran out on my last day and made the mistake of using a Dominican Condom its like having a rubber glove on your dick you feel NOTHING. Luckly some of my fellow mongers lent me some good old USA Condoms.

The managers of Blackbears are very nice and helpfull. They gave me all the info on the clubs. Plus if i had a problem with one of the girls trying to scam me i could just complain and she would be dealt with. The Single Deluxe Suite nice. The girls were friendlier at Black Beards than El Bohem or Crystals. Its all pros over there. Not to mention its pretty dark in those places so you cant see to well.

I never did find a place with European girls. But i was told they were way to expensive. I would definitly recomend Black Beards for rookie travelers who want to start out or groups of friends. Hopefully in the future the owner will ad more activities and improve and expand.

You can get a chica to spend TLN with you for 1,500 pesos about $50 US and the chicas on this service are only about 6's.

You can do better hunting on your own.
