I could fly to Warsaw/Budapest/Minsk for a week at a 3 star guest friendly dump, and go right to the source for these most likely Bitchy and entitled slavic chicas that they have imported to the DR. I'm English but now live permanently in the DR. I still rely on bank cards to access half my income. Yes, I pay a fee but the convenience is worth it. Costs average about 3% for me but it depends on your UK bank.

Try to use bank cards inside the bank at the teller counter during bank opening hours. (You will need your passport to do this). This eliminates the chance of ATM fraud or malfunction (both more common in the DR than in the UK).

Also you can ask for a reasonable amount in small bills. I typically draw RD$15,000 and take 1000 of it in 50s and 1000 in 100s. Change is very hard to acquire in the DR and it you don't have small bills you will find yourself overpaying.

If you have to use an ATM ask for an "odd" amount such as RD$4,900. This will ensure that you get at least a few small denomination notes (better than nothing). Always use an ATM outside a bank. Then if the ATM "eats" your card (has happened to me twice) it is easier to retrieve it (usually next morning on production of your passport). If you lose your card to a "stand-alone" ATM you might not get it back before you have to leave the DR.

Important that you advise your card issuers that you will be using your cards in the DR and your dates, otherwise they may block your card after the first usage.

Last time I brought all my money as cash. Which is uncomfortable.

Even more uncomfortable it was that the safety box at the hotel was with key and not electronic lock! So you had to hide the key or carry it with you!
