Article "Large open-air brothel Curaçao closes after 71 years, but for how long? "

I found an article about Campo from June 2020. This is the "NOS" newspaper from the Netherlands but translated into English by google translate. Looks like investors are waiting for virus Covid to end. Here's what the former manager of Marlon Regales said: . "Marlon Regales is not concerned about Campo's survival. " It is now closed due to bankruptcy, but the business model is strong, especially when a casino license is issued. "According to the former manager, investors are waiting until the corona pandemic is over, to create the opportunity for the oldest profession in the new normal ". Here I will try to link to the article https://nos.nl/artikel/2336831-groot...r-hoelang.html A copy of the article here: "Large open-air brothel Curaçao closes after 71 years, but for how long? ".

    Dick Drayer.

    Correspondent Curaçao.

After 71 years, Campo Alegre in Curaçao comes to an end. The open-air brothel was established by the government and the Catholic Church to protect Curaçao's own women against moral decay. Campo already had millions in debt and the corona measures were added to that. This week the last 24 sex workers left; now the resort with 150 tendon rooms is empty.

"Mi amor, como estas, how are you?" I get a big smack on the cheek from Reina, the Colombian queen of prostitution in Curaçao. At least, that's what Marlon Regales, who held sway over the camp for years, thinks. Together we sit on a bench outside Campo. No one is allowed in because of corona.

"I've been coming here for 24 years and have a large clientele. They now give me money to survive, but as soon as the borders open in Colombia, I have to leave. Until then, the government will pay for the electricity and I do not have to pay room rent, but there is also no sex, "says Reina.

The adult resort can be recognized by the green fig leaf in front of the entrance. Campo is reminiscent of a Roman army camp from the comics of Asterix and Obelix with high walls and a special, tightly guarded entrance. Inside the camp, the army tents have been replaced by barracks, where the sex workers received their clients.

The concept was certainly unique in the post-war era. Women received a work and residence permit for three months from the Curaçao government and rented a small tendon room at the resort themselves. What they earned with their sex work was theirs, as long as they paid the rent of 65 euros a day. After three months they had to leave the island for a year and were replaced by 'fresh' forces.

The American army, the Dutch state, Shell and the Roman Catholic Church were just after the war in favor of the establishment of a state brothel, although the Netherlands had a brothel ban and the church officially rejected prostitution. But with the establishment of a brothel, the 'evil' of prostitution could be contained and venereal diseases combated.

Girls from Curaçao were not allowed to work in the camp and that has remained so to this day. You mainly found women from Colombia and the Dominican Republic.

Curaçao initially managed to keep prostitution fairly under control with this tolerance construction. Yet for a long time there has been a hint of drug and women trafficking around the open-air brothel and prostitution has moved to the city in recent years. "With the closure of Campo, prostitution is now moving all the way to the city center," says Regales.

And that is possible, because with the arrival of thousands of Venezuelan women who are fleeing their country without papers because of poverty, the offer is large. Most of them work as a so-called 'trago girl' in a snèk, the Papiamento name for the local bar.

"Trago girls make a living selling drinks to customers," says Marisella Flemming of Famia Plania. "But if a man wants more, it can be arranged outside. ".

Her Family Planning Foundation is taking illegal Venezuelan sex workers seeking protection under her 'medical' care. They receive food packages to survive through the Food Bank.

    Future after corona?

"There is no more work and the male customers are also without income", says Flemming. "Food is necessary, of course, but they actually need money to support their families in Venezuela. They are even worse off. ".

Marlon Regales is not concerned about Campo's survival. "It is now closed due to bankruptcy, but the business model is strong, especially when a casino license is issued. " According to the former manager, investors are waiting until the corona pandemic is over, to create the opportunity for the oldest profession in the new normal" (end of article).

Some more randoms thoughts about CUR, ARU, and SXM

Crappy weather where I am today, so what better way to escape in these times, but to be in the Caribbean. Or at least fantasize about it. Forums have been kind of quiet with real time updates. Guess a sign that nothing is happening due to the pandemic. I know that Mel is sailing to SXM next month. Hope he is able to get off the boat at some point. Will be interesting to read what he has to say about the situation in St. Maarten.

Unfortunately, I'm writing off any trips to the Caribbean for the foreseeable future. My guess is until a viable vaccine is established, there is no way we will return to normalcy with mongering as we knew it pre-COVID.

I'm sure that there will always be options via the internet when one visits the islands, but escort services aren't my cup of tea. I like to kick the tires and look under the hood, even before a test drive, let alone making the big purchase. With that being said, here are some thoughts regarding Curacao. If and it's a big if, Campo ever reopens, I'm guessing Curacao is done. I don't see Campo reopening in these times, unless a miracle happens. Furthermore, it went bankrupt and if a vaccine for COVID was available tomorrow, Campo would still be off the radar. The Curacao Chronicle is a good online source of information to keep abreast of what's happening on the island, for those looking to keep up to date. Also, Curacao is really clamping down on the Venezuelans on the island. I never partook in Cubaweeg, but I know that the borders (the sea) are being more monitored than ever. The Dutch military is providing assistance with the Coast Guard to intercept boats headed to both Curacao and Aruba from Venezuela. Furthermore, the USA Military operates FOL's (Forward Operation Locations) at both Hato and Queen Beatrix International Airports for drug intercepts and surveillance. In other words, FOL is a kinder, softer word than Military Base. They've just extended the lease agreements. No wonder Maduro and Venezuela have been so well behaved, when the USA Could basically hit Venezuela with a sling shot!

Then again, there will always be freelancers working the world's oldest profession. Will just have to work harder to find, and then run a greater risk since nothing is being regulated.

Wondering how much more of a ghost town San Nicolas in Aruba could possibly become? But I'm betting that house on the outskirts of the RLD with the rough, older Dominicans still has it's door open! They probably have developed every antibody possible to mankind. The virus solution could lie there! LOL! For those that have been to San Nicolas, you know the house I'm talking about in the back alleys.

Here's a shout out to our man on the ground in Curacao, Torso. Feel free to add your perspective. And to Mel over on the SXM forum, who I know reads this one as well. Happy sailing and have a safe trip. Looking forward to what you encounter in SXM, once they let you on shore!

Campo won't be open until maybe some time in 2021! Probably not until 2022 after some refurbishing, and a host of legal changes on the island, and only if there are vaccines and therapeutics and COVID is over.

Curacao just started opening their borders up to receive some tourists from a select few countries--and now the virus is back on the island so they may be headed for lockdown again, and are going to restrict flights again.

Its like some people here are too horny to have any sense of reality.

    Ridiculous.
A simple "no" would have sufficed without littering the forum with your diatribes. Or you could have just ignored the question.

    The Carnal Pleasures of Campo?

There are several issues that need to be resolved before you can indulge in the Carnal Pleasures of Campo.

Read this article first, it will give you important information about Curacao in 'The Times of CV19'.

Curacao Has Reopened Tourism With Some Restrictions.

    https://www.traveloffpath.com/curaca...who-can-visit/'.

Where YOU have been prior to jetting into Curacao is the first hump you need to get over.

If you are in the US, you are shit out of luck.

Due to the piss-poor job the US has done in handling the Coronavirus,

Travelers from US are Not Allowed in many countries.

It will take till the end of the year, or longer, before the US can hammer these infection / death numbers down.

The US currently has 1,000 deaths a day with 4,000,000 cases in total.

#1 World Leader in Death & Infection.

    Not very pretty.

Curacao has Containment Standards that the US will not meet for many, many months.

Until the US Government reduces these massive daily increases in CV19 Infection to Zero.

Few if any countries in the EU, Caribbean, Central America or South America will let Americans in.

Really can't blame them for that.

US did the same to China, Italy & other countries back in March & April.

As of July 1 Only Travelers from these countries can get admitted to Curacao:

Aruba Belgium Bonaire Canada China Eustatius France Germany Italy Netherlands Saba St. Maarten Spain.

If US Restrictions don't apply & you are coming from a country on the list, pack up your sunscreen & enjoy.

But there is also a totally different problem................

"In June, 2020 Campo Alegre went Bankrupt.

The Campo Alegre brothel is bankrupt.

Two companies went to court on Tuesday to file for bankruptcy.

    The judge agreed to that.

This includes a cleaning company that has not been paid since December.

There is also a tax debt of almost 7 million guilders. (US $3,900,000).

Campo has been closed since March due to the corona crisis.

In addition to the 150 sex workers who work on a temporary basis.

84 more people, supporting staff, are now on the street. ".

I also have beautiful memories. I've been to Curacao 6 times always in January for a week. Great vacation: during the day the beach mainly Mambo beach and in the evening a visit to Campo (sun, sea, sand and. Sex! I think that if these entrepreneurs from the Netherlands are opening Campo again it can be much better because they have experience how to run this kind of business from Amsterdam and the Netherlands where prostitution is legal.

WILLEMSTAD. Last week, the Council of Ministers (RvM) approved an inquiry into the role of Campo Alegre within the community to determine, among other things, whether the principle of 80 years after ago when the brother was opened, still applies.

Minister of Justice Quincy Girigorie announced this during a recent press conference. Campo was opened as a brothel in 1940 with a specific purpose; namely to regulate and centralize prostitution. After the recent closure of the brothel, prostitution is now taking place in an uncontrolled manner at various locations, including on the Cubaweg. With all its consequences, says Girigorie.

"What we noticed earlier with the phenomenon of trago (drinking) lady, is now happening much more and is now also much more public. It mainly concerns undocumented women and the question is whether it happens safely. What is the consequence of this? Possible contamination of sexually transmitted diseases. ".

Anyone who asks Girigorie at this point. Even before the investigation is completed. Whether the object of Campo is justified, will receive an affirmative answer. "Campo has a certain role within the community, precisely to prevent prostitution from taking place in different places on the island. It offers certain advantages, such as protection. With such a brothel, where there is a doctor who regularly checks the women, we are far ahead compared to other countries in the region," said the minister.

The research that is being conducted must clearly map out what the current reality is in the field of prostitution in Curaao, what Campo's role is in this and whether it still applies. -end).
Please note "A group of Dutch entrepreneurs plan to make a restart (Campo) after the corona crisis. "That sounds good!

I also think that Campo will be open. Curacao is associated with the administration in the Netherlands and the Dutch tolerate prostitution if it is legal and regulated. I am sure they do not want t on he island of Curacao the chaos of illegal and unregulated prostitution and related problems as it was on Curacao before the opening of Campo over 50 years ago.
