I was looking forward to coming to La Paz for many reasons.. and I'm enjoying it so far, but I was really surprised to log on to the board and see the dearth of messages. What's up?

I figured there would be a ton of action, just like in any other Latin American capital. Where are the strip clubs / brothels / massage parlors? Katana sounded good, but now I see that it's closed.

Any info whatsoever would be appreciated. Alternatively - I'll be in town for the next four or five days, if anybody is up for hanging out. First drinks are on me.

Hereby some information about La Paz, which I've published on another forum.

A few times a year La Paz is on my path and I always like to be there for a few nights.

Normally I go after dinner to the Hard Rock Cafe on Illampu for a drink. Especially in weekends it's a very busy place from 11:30 PM. Lot's of bricheras, so you can take your pick. And if I'm not going to be lucky, I'll take a cab to Katanas, near the 'Puente de las Americas' (Bridge of the Americas). This is a up-scale place with a huge stage with 5 poles. From 11:00 PM they provide you with good-looking strippers. It's a real treat. Besides the dancers there are normally enough girls waiting for a drink (or two.). In the place are some small rooms for rent, but a better deal is to go to Kandy Motel (has changed it's name). In this case you have to pay a fee for leaving with the girl and, of course, negotiate your price with the girl.

Katanas offers you an international variety of girls from Bolivia, Brasil, Paraguay, Peru, Argentina and others. Personally I prefer the girls from Paraguay, but hey.

Just to let you know that there is more in La Paz.

Prices Katanas:

- Entrance is free. Enjoy the shows!

- Bar fee for leaving with a girl ± US $ 50. 00

- Girl US $ 80-100 all night depending your negotiation-skills

one of the things i enjoyed while in bolivia was chewing coca leaf. as i have never seen a post explaining how to maximize the leaf's stimulating properties i thought it due time to share.

it was during a three week trek of the rainforest i first tried it. prior to leaving civilization my guide made me purchase a large bag of the leaves and several small (manufactured) packets of baking soda -- called "biko" locally. two weeks into the trek, as our purchased food supplies were running low, the coca leaves came into play to power us through a day's trekking.

when i first tried chewing coca leaf with biko it was essentially a non-event. my mouth went a little numb. that's it. i shrugged my shoulders and didn't use it again for a few days.

the second time i loaded a pile of leaves in my hand and then heavily sprinkled biko on the leaves, popped the package into my cheek. it wasn't long and wow, i was buzzing like a bee. i quickly realized the more biko i sprinkled on the bigger the bang.

later, back in la paz, i tried other catalysts. seems the net is riddled with names of these other items: banana ash, palm ash, lime paste, pot ash, to name a few. these are regularly used by the locals (and tourists) to unleash the stimulating elements of the leaf. but ugh, they make the leaf taste horrible. they also didn't react with the leaf as strongly as biko did. i stayed away from the alternatives and stuck firmly with biko.

while wandering la paz and el alto i always had a mouthful of leaves, a big source bag bulging in my pocket, two packets of biko. it got so bad that during my nights of mongering i started to feel conflicted between drinking beer and chewing coca leaf. it's hard to do both at the same time. it takes a real multi-tasking talent to do both and make out, finger then fuck bolivian cashsl*ts in curtained bar booths.

a couple weeks later the miners of potosi were completely bewildered to see me chewing mouthfuls of coca leaf loaded with biko. "where the hell did you learn this from?!"

the only caution i can give is to avoid chewing copious amounts of leaf and biko in a single night. several nights i overdid it and charred the inside of my cheeks and burned my tongue. your lips, tongue and cheeks are stained green for two to three days.

how strong is the kick? this isn't cocaine, with its breakneck peaks and troughs, by any stretch. it's a mild stimulant by comparison. after a heavy night of chewing it usually took me one to two hours to be able to go to sleep (two cups of coffee will keep me wide awake for six hours).

various bag sizes of coca leaves, as well as small manufactured packets of biko, are available at any one of the hundreds of street stalls rep001tered throughout all bolivian cities and towns. a medium sized leaf bag and one packet of biko will cost $1.

it was a sad day when i exited bolivia for chile. the only question chilean customs asked me was "do you have any coca leaf?" they didn't bother asking me if i had 15 kilos of crack or marijuana.

you can buy nasty hard drugs in any south american city, but man, try to find coca leaves. impossible! i looked high and low for months through the markets of chile, argentina and brazil. not a leaf. finally i just gave up and went back to beers. mmmm, beers.

by the time i looped around back to peru i decided to stay away from coca leaf. faced with an impending return to sex-prison i didn't want to find myself undergoing simultaneous withdrawal from two of my favorite drugs: pussy and coca leaf.
