The feeling I got is that your mouth goes numb a bit and you just end up more alert, not sleepy. Of course the effect is not the same for everyone.

That is true and also the quality of the leaves. Sometimes the leaves available are shitty and don't do anything, but good leaves will numb your mouth and give you energy when you feel altitude sickness or are tired from hiking at altitude. The truth is when you get to altitude it *helps* and you will want it. It is not like doing cocaine...not by any stretch of the imagination.

Does chewing Coca leaves give you a "light headed" effect?

Chewing the leaves (with a small piece of greyish material sold with the leaves) gives you a small energy boost, significantly eases the headache from altitude and numbs the mouth. It certainly did not give me any "high" or euphoria. And it did not dampen my apetite. The mate de coca (coca tea) did even less.
It probably won't protect you from pulmonary edema, shortness of breath or other catastrophic altitude ills.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, I did drink a fair amount of Bolivian beer my first day and had no untoward effects. I was very well hydrated however, and I was taking Diamox. The next day I had almost a liter of wine during dinner, also with no problems.

Relax. It ony takes 2-3 days. After that your body will adapt to the high altitude. Them first 2-3 days don't do anything stupid, relax. Take long rests and don't push your body to the limit. And keep chewing them coca leaves;.) (or drink your tea) Them Indians do that shit for ages and it helps them well. In Bolivia you can get coca leaves on almost every streetcorner. Just don't bring them back home. LOL

In Santa Cruz there will be NO high altitude and you could f%ck some jungle pussies:.)

artisttyp and others: a bit of perspective. sure there were dozens of **** youth and normal adult bars in el alto (up to 4150 meters). but as for p4p options i knew of only 15; a handful of those i could not find due to fucked up street numbering. another 46 chongo options still exist in the valley of centro la paz (3600 meters). even if all of el alto burned to ashes there would not be a shortage of little stubby brown indian women. if anything expect centro's chongos to have more selection for el alto's girls will continue to seek income elsewhere. you still have the cheapest casas in all of south america along calle figueroa, asking as low as $2.50 a squirt. every chica in those places is a stubby brown indian woman.

while i am posting here i may as well add where i stayed in la paz. hostal copacabana at 734 illampu. 40 bolivianos ($5) rented me a private room, public bath. a great clean multi-story hotel i stumbed on, clerk on duty 24 hours (to let you in at night), free internet downstairs (2 comps), two cable-tv sitting areas, in the center of the tourist trade, two blocks from the $2.50 chongos. there are many rooms with private bath/tv inside for a few more dollars.
