The atmosphere is quite wild and loud but very entertaining. Like that bar in the Star Wars movie.

The crowd is a mixture of very rough locals and very cute local women. I got warned by half a dozen of people that there were lots of malandros, bandidos and ladrões around. There propably where, but the majority seemed very friendly and happy to offer beer and chat with the gringo. belem is a surprising modern city of 1.6 million people with high tower buildings right the middle of the amazon rain forest, far from the rest of the civilized world. its economy is based on its strategic position at the entrance of the amazon river. there are few touristic interests here (the old city and the rain forest), as there is no beach: belem is at 200km from the atlantic ocean.

how to get there

belem is at 3000km from rio, road transport is difficult. there is boat transport along the amazon river, but the main passenger transport with the rest of the world is by air through belem’s international airport. most flights are national flights. varig, tam and a few other brazilian companies have daily flights between belem and most of the main brazilian cities. there are no direct flights to and from europe or northern america. there are however a few flights to the northern neighbouring countries: tam has a flight to caracas, air caraibes to cayenne and surinam airways to paramaribo. these flights may be considered to go to belem, as they are much closer hubs to northern america or europe than rio or sao paolo.

where to stay

hilton hotel in belem is the main hotel where all the “gringos” stay. it is conveniently located in the center of belem. prices are around 150$/night. there are plenty of cheaper hotels around, but i suppose that those who come that far to belem are either on business or rich tourists.

how to get around

i would not recommend renting a car for a first trip. there are enough taxi’s in town and they have the useful information about the p4p scene. just take care they put on the meter.

security and health

regarding crime, belem has a relaxing atmosphere and i never felt unsecured. however, any brazilian will warn you that by night you should not walk in the streets and always take a taxi. keep all your valuable at hotel (passport, credit card…), and take only with you the money you will need that night. police will not try to bribe you, and will not ask for your passport. belem has modern hospitals, and medical facilities are excellent as long as you can afford them. and by the way, viagra is available without medical prescription in any pharmacy!

money

don’t change money at airport, rates are bad. just use the convenient atm everywhere, there are even just at the entrance of the hilton hotel. the rate changes a lot but is now 220 real for 100$ or 260 real for 100€.

language

most brazilian don’t speak other language than portuguese. english is hardly spoken. however, if you are fluent in spanish, just take some quick brazilian portuguese lessons before. brazilians are very patient, with the few portuguese words you will have learned together with spanish, it’s enough for the basic mongering conversation. we are not here to try to have conversation with a nobel price winner right?

the brothels

the place to go is locomotivo, on the road to the airport. any taxi driver know where it is, it will cost 15 r$ from the center. it’s a huge brown complex with motel, disco and bar/restaurant. to enter the disco, you will have to pay 4r$ at the bar. it is open from 1pm till 5am. it’s a huge double floor space with chairs and tables. on stage there are striptease shows. at the back there is a bar area. food is available. the disco is not air conditioned, but you can get some fresh air at a veranda on the first floor. there are about 60-80 girls, 20-30 years old but i would rate them 4-7 at most. however there are a few 8 and even 9 gems. they are not easy to spot as the place tends to be too dark. girls will ask 150r$ for one hour, but you may get it for 100r$. you can bring them to the motel of the complex. there are different rates of rooms starting from 11r$ up to 25r$. as a gringo, only the 25r$ will be available, but they are very good and clean. they are air-conditioned, have a nice round bed, music, tv with porn, refrigerator with drinks, bathroom and even a jacuzzi. this place can be used as a motel (with a private car park attached to the room), and the room for the night will cost the double. girls will take the time, shower before and after. service is very good. when they feel confident, dfk and bbbj is available. one girl poored some soft drink on my dick before bbbj, it was funny!
