A rainy city with some interesting places to explore.
Avoid Bar do Parque and the sleazy bars down at the port where you'll only find ugly girls.

Locomotive has some good-looking girls. The day for discounted prices at Locomotivo is monday. The boate is closed on mondays. But the small lanchonette next to the motel is open. All the girls from the boate hang out there watching novelas. 50 reais for the girl and 13 for the room. The motel is open. Good deal!

Bolero and Lapinha used to be OK. Ask any taxi-driver if they are open.

If you want to see a different place, go to Paupilha. You might need to ask several taxi-drivers before you'll find one who will take you there.

Paupilha is an open-air discotheque. Funk and forró. Extremely loud music, dark, ice-cold beer, shabby tables, some fights, heavily-armed police enter now and then, drunk and happy people and many sexy girls. My kind of place!

Lots of pro's. To avoid hitting on the wrong girl just head for one of the girls with the top written "Club das Safadinhas". Lots og cuties. Price is low, 15 reais, as the clients are mostly poor brazilians.

When you arrive there and get out of the taxi you might get a bit worried. The area is rough! You will get the attention of all the locals, many of them looking really bad. Don't be afraid, just stay cool! Take a beer and chat with the locals and show them that you are a good guy just looking for some fun. Then everybody are friendly. Don't go there dressed up and showing a lot of money. I enjoyed Paupilha very much. Definitely a fun place in my opinion. If it sounds interesting to you, try it out.

Belem prostitutes I have found quite bad so far. They are very ugly and not too many, perhaps 15 in the park. To compare, I do not think many of the termas in Rio would let them work, for fear of scaring away customers. The city is very dangerous, and one day I was found in the middle of a shooting between police and a run-away car. Another tourist was choked behind the Hilton hotel and he told me that they stole everything, and he was led out by a "friend" he had met at a bar.

It is very hot and there is no beach, and the city is very much dirty with lots of sewage and a horrible smell from the river area.

I think that I will go to Natal now and try it out.

I need advice from any of you guys who was in Belem. I am going to be in Belem from Oct 9 to Oct 12 ( three nights). I don't have any specific activity in mind. Apart from mongering, what are other things I can do there? What is the best place or bar to go for mongering? I was checking the net for hotels. It looks like its fairly expensive for a place like Belem such as Regente in Downtown $68 per nite for a single room, Beira Rio $66, Hilton $100. Any suggestions which is the best hotel to stay? Of course, that has to include overnight guests.

Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Actually, I am in the process of buying a Brazil Air Pass for four cities: Sao Paulo to Manaus to Belem to Rio to Sao Paulo. I add Belem because not too many tourists go there. It may be rough, but there is a chance that I may have good time too! I am going to be there for only three nights and two days. I am trying to pick up a little Portuguese. I would say a little Portuguse will go a long way in a place like Belem!

Lapinha has now closed (according to a taxi driver).

Locomotivo is still open, a big brown ugly building you'll probably pass on your way from the sirport. Motel is attached, girls wanted 100R$ to 150R$, a bit too much in my opinion for the location. Got a taxi from centro there for 15R$. Closes around 3am, opens at 11am or so.

Lots of bars/restaurants inc Chinese at Estacada Docas. Basically it consists of some refurbed dock buildings alongside the key which flash bars etc. At 6pm everyday you'll here an air raid siren which is telling the market its time to close.

Ver do Peso is over rated by the LP. I actually walked past it many times without realising it. The LP says its dangerous and you need a police escort, what hogwash. I actually walked past the nearby port with lots of screamiong pigs all tied up until I got to a fort. Past here is another market, but pretty rundown.

Across the road from the holiday inn is the Bar do Parque, a few girls at nice, a bit rough and crazy though. Hippy types sell there junk on the pavement, a lot of homeless sleep nearby infront of the Loja da Americas. Take care at night.

Overall its a poor place, not much money floating about.

But why did you choose Belem?

It seems quality has gotten bad in past years in Belem. Maybe they are all going to Fortaleza where the European money is??? I read that there was no European tourists in 1999 in Fortaleza. Now it is almost a Italian colony.

So Belem may have been good. But not bad. Who knows the truth.

Yah, Nibu -- I wish I could help. I'm not planning to go back to Brasil until late next summer. I wish I had more info. For me, though, the brest places in Brasil (outside Cafe Foto in SP) were those small industrial cities with a surprisingly good scene (e.g. Belem, Recife, etc.) I'm sure Belem is still happening because it doesn't depend on the tourist dollar.

We may or may not all know much about numbers, but as men we all seem to know what number we prefer when it comes to women, but there is alot of confusion when it comes to the magic numbers 7-8-9-10 . Agree that Belem is quite rough for a westerner, i spent two weeks there with the idea of getting laid everyday with stunners, reserved a room in Hilton which is front of the main whoring 'rendez vous' called Bar do Parque, an outside bar with action from 5pm ; those two weeks were a little diseapointing in term of whoring (with some good surprises happily), the quality level both in bar do Parque and "O Lapinha" (the main boite of Belem with shows) was low, and the action on weekdays, when only 15/20chicks could be found in O Lapinha was really calm...the girls were mainly rejects from SP or other states, not so attractives and very pro;
Of course like everywhere in Brasil a gem can be found (a 9), i met her one night in Bar do Parque, and she saved the end of my stay....
I could recommend ' Docas', a large avenue with many cafés and live music, full with locals chicks and sometime semi pros. And of course, like in every big Brasilian city, the foodcourt (4th floor) of the main shopping center (in Belem 'Igatemi') which is always crowded with chicks (mainly regulars, but some semi pros too) and anyway a very good hunting area on late afternoons....i made the experience with a very nice regular chick who came from a far suburb for partying on a friday night and was pleased to being offered a diner, some beers/caipirinhas and a room for the night !!
