Hi Tomjoha,
Going on a Monday to the old Cascinha de Siri is a sure bet. All the WG and mongers are meeting there.
During the day you meet gringos at Barra beach. There are not too many foreign mongers in Salvador, mostly local mongers.

GS: Why don't you take the party boat? Booze and party atmosphere included. Transit time is only 30-40 minutes longer than the catamaran and the catamaran ride can be bumpy when you return to Salvador.
Enjoy

Posts: 27I can recommend Alain Zamrini rental services at bahiaonline.net. He's cool and knows why you're coming to Salvador.
I'd rather stay in Rio Vermelho or Ondina.
Succes

Barra is safe. Just the usual beglars who will annoy you if you wear RayBan sunglasses and a Nike cap. Almost no backpackers in this area.
I you are looking for a place, I would also recommend the Rio Vemelho (Red River) area. This is the rising star, next to Barra.
No go areas are Itapua and Piata. Although they are close to the airport and have the best beaches.

I would not advise to stay at Pelourinho. At these old houses you do not have swimming-pools, you must every time take a taxi if you want to go to the beach and it is not safe.
Ondina or Barra would be my choice.
There is a place called Barra Flats. You can rent a flat, totallly girl-friendly and not too expensive.
If you want something posh, got to Blue Tree at Rio Vermelho.

Guys,
I will be in Salvador 1st week of September and am looking for a flat to rent. Where would you recommend I stay? What is the poshest, safest area in Salvador? Is it Barra? How is Ondina different to Barra, if one had to choose between them? Would an old house restored into a pousada in the Pelourinho area be an option you would recommend instead?
Many Thanks.
