A short update on Porto Seguro and Arraial theÁjuda.

GENERAL:

* The tourism has gone down very much the last years. Still quite a few people around at New Year and Carnival, but not close to what it used to be.

* There have been a lot of violence in Arraial the last two years. Many people have been shot. Mostly people involved in drugbusiness, but also a few gringos living in Arraial. There have been several executions daytime in the center of Arraial. There are much more police around than it used to be. The police have done a thorough cleaning, killing of many bandits and vagabundos. You'll se much less crack-heads down at the main praça in Arraial. Only the last week there have been two killings in the bairro.

NON-PRO ACTION:

* IMO the main reason for coming here is because it's easy to meet non-pro's. Local girls or tourist girls.

* Bad news: It's no longer the gringo-paradise that it used to be in the early nineties, when a gringo was a rarity and the local girls were competing about getting laid by a gringo. Both Arraial and Porto have become too touristy, neat and tidy. They have lost a lot of the old charm. Many of the old bars and clubs have turned into T-shirt shops, pharmacies, cafés etc.

* Good news: It's still quite easy to meet non-pro's, but it takes some more work. It helps if you're young and / or speak good portuguese.

* Local girls: There are lots of very beautiful dark-skinned local girls. Flirt, date and hope for some good luck. The really beautiful ones are harder to score. It helps a lot if you have local friends that can introduce you to these girls.

* Tourist girls: There are lots of tourists coming every week from Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio etc. These excursions usually stay for one or two weeks. Those girls party quite a lot. Many of these girls never had any real contact with gringos and are quite curious to get to know gringos.

* When you find a girl that you like: Be quick and go for her straight ahead and don't waste any time at all! You will not be the only guy looking to get laid. You'll compete with all the tourist guys and hords of local capoeira guys.

PRO ACTION:

* Ho-houses: There used to be a strip club, Bagdad Café. It's still there but it looks closed. No loss if it's closed for good as it always used to be a shitty place. There are actually a couple of ho-bars. They are very low-end and are only frequented by local guys. The girls there are not doable. Those bars lies down in the Mangue, which isn't a safe area. There are also some ho-houses with better quality in Baiano, the big favela outside of Porto Seguro. Not a safe area unless you go there with a local living in Baiano.

* Streetworkers, Porto Seguro: You'll find them on Passarela do Álcool and down at Praça do Relógio.

* Streetworkers, Arraial theÁjuda: You'll find them on the main square, at the drink-stands and on the main street. Try the bars Buda and Morocha (ex Gira-Sol).

* Some evenings you'll find almost no pro's at all and other evenings a dozen of pro's. In low-season it can be tough to find a pro. Right now, before carnival there are about 15-20 pro's circulating every evening.

* Pro-detection: Which are pro's? If you have some experience of Brazil you'll quickly notice which girls that are pro's. If you are unsure, go ahead slowly or wait for them approaching you. If you offer money to a local regular girl you propbly get a good beating from her friends.

* Quality of the pro's: There are no real stunners, but quite a few doable ones.

* Prices: Ignore the girls trying to charge R$100. Most girls go for as low as R$30 for a quickie. Maximum R$50.

One of my relatives works as a "Delegado" in Porto Seguro. He is assistant Public Prosecutor and when I see him from time to time the tells me the worst stories. Security and justice is a matter of money. As a tourist you normally have nothing to fear as you stay out of trouble and away from drugs / drug-pushing.

The majority of the people killed (approx. 300 per year) are linked to drugs. 50 % of the working girls there are on drugs. Last year they had approx. 30 WG killed in relation with drugs. We are talking about the bottom-feeders, comming from the Favela de Ratos. These girls are used to rob you blind and they simply robed the wrong guys. I really mean that these girls are very bad news.

Two years ago a guy was robbed by a WG. She drew a knife on him and he simply shot her. As he was the son of a big shot in the Federal Government is was ruled within 5 days that it was legitimate self-defence and he was aquitted. Try to do that somewhere else.

Security in Brasil is relative: If you go to the state of Acre, Roraima or Rondonia the law is with the old families. Like the Wild Wild West.

In States of Bahia, Rio or SP it is much better but beware!

I was in Maceio again a few weeks ago, it was much worse than last time

2 years ago.

Maceio is about 100 miles south of Recife. I was in Maceio for a week last November 2010. Seemed like less action than my previous trip in 2005. I did go to a stripclub / bar / house with girl action in the Jaragua neighborhood. I forgot the name but it was so so.

My impression of Maceio in 2005 was that each night there was a different hot spot where programa girls go and you have to know where to go on which nite. I ran into this wonderful forum not so long ago. It’s great, wonderful reports! After wandering the streets of Natal and some other smaller cities in the Brazilian Nordeste and the interior for over ten years, with some short breaks to Rio as well, I’m heading for Bahia next week. Planning to do some profound exploration of Salvador, after that want to head for Maceió. Salvador wouldn’t be a problem, since it’s a bigger city, I’ll normally find my way there or the meninas will find me ☺.

On Maceió I’ve read the great reports, so I have a basic idea of where to go and how it is. But the reports date from 2007 and earlier, and might be somewhat outdated. Is there somebody around here with recent information on Maceió? And how about the accommodation? Are the hotels GF? Normally, I would prefer an apartment, I’m looking for some on www.aluguetemporada.com.br, normally that works fine for me, but if somebody has an interesting suggestion?

I’ll post and update any relevant information after I arrive next week.
