Speak little Spanish but generally can read it, since I'm fluent in PT.

Debating whether it would be worth my while to fly to Bogota or MDE to see what it's all about -- been trying to RTTF but it's not easy to catch up, and lots of catch-phrases are thrown around without beginner-level explanations (e. g. , "The Mansion"). If someone has impressions to share, I'd appreciate it. Particularly whether you think it's worth a trip (6-8+ hours by plane, depending on city -- eg GIG-BOG-MDE) from BR to explore. ON Saturday night in Parque Poblado in Medellíand, young people gather to drink, smoke and chat. Barbara and her cousin Sophia have more serious business: they hope to make enough money from selling sex to live decently after fleeing Venezuela, where survival is a struggle.

Barbara, who is 27, prefers her former occupation as the owner of a nail and hair business in Caracas, Venezuela's capital. But polish and shampoo are as hard to find as food and medicine, and so she has come to Medellíand. In an hour a sex worker can make the equivalent of a month's minimum wage in Venezuela. Colombian pesos "are worth something", unlike Venezuela's debauched currency, the bolívar, Barbara says. "At least here one can eat breakfast and lunch. ".

Some 4,500 Venezuelan prostitutes are thought to be working in Colombia; the trade is legal in both countries. But until recently they were often rounded up by police and deported back to Venezuela by the busload. That changed in April, when Colombia's constitutional court ruled that Venezuelan sex workers are entitled to work visas. Mass deportations violate international human-rights law, it said. "One should weigh up the reasons they decided to come to Colombia. And the specific situation they would face in Venezuela were they to be returned," said the ruling.

The case has its origins in Chinácota, a tiny town an hour's drive from the border city of seeúcuta. Last year the town's mayor closed down the Taberna Barlovento, a bar that also serves as a brothel, saying it violated zoning rules. Along with beverages, the bar offers four bedrooms just big enough to fit a mattress or two. Founded in 1935, the bar is a Chinácota institution, says Nelcy Esperanza Delgado, its owner.

When the mayor shut Ms Delgado down, she fought back in court. She and the prostitutes who worked there, including four Venezuelans, had no other income, she said. Closing Taberna Barlovento violated their right to work. The court agreed, and the bar reopened.

The ruling is likely to encourage Venezuelans who ply other trades. Daniel Pagés of the Association of Venezuelans in Colombia estimates that 1. 5 m of his countrymen are in Colombia, about 40% of them without proper papers. The sex workers are joined by electricians, mechanics, empanada vendors—all of whom are seeking a way to cope with their country's shortages and queues, and an inflation rate expected to exceed 700% this year. Many of them commute daily from Venezuela. They could use the court's ruling on sex workers to argue that they, too, are entitled to work visas, says Andrés Delgado Gil, the lawyer who argued Ms Delgado's case.

Colombians along the border are accustomed to Venezuelans streaming across, but the area's sex workers do not relish the competition. Venezuelans charge the equivalent of $10-13 for a 20-minute session; the Colombian rate is around $13-17. Colombians complain that they are being forced to cut their prices. While Colombia is El Dorado compared with Venezuela, economic growth is slow and the unemployment rate is 9. 4%. Colombians haven't forgotten that in 2015 Venezuela's president, Nicolás Maduro, blamed them for the shortages and deported 1,100. Many forded rivers on their way back to Colombia.

While the law is becoming more welcoming to desperate Venezuelans, Colombians are growing increasingly nervous about the influx. Barbara thinks other countries offer bigger opportunities. She is planning to move on to Ecuador, where customers pay in American dollars.

You're in the wrong country if you think a practical lifestyle expectation is $3000 per month. That's roughly 9 million pesos. I had coffee and a long meeting this morning with a woman studying to be an orthodontist. She tells me, she can expect, after she finishes schooling about 1 million pesos per month. I sometimes give a 500 peso tip to taxi drivers and they are thrilled.

Adjust your thinking to match the local economy.

Use SA for initial contact. After exchanging initial messages ask "Tienes Whatsapp?" Before you do that, install Whatsapp. In Whatsapp tell them what you're looking for, whether an hour of fun, overnight stays, travel companion or exclux ssive use. Don't tell them you are looking for a long term arrangement, unless you plan on paying thousands for $30 pussy.

Some will tell you they want something long term. Some will accept short term. As you're talking to them, weed them out. You should be able to figure out which ones are worth the effort. Definitely don't offer $100 of the bat. That's where most will start negotiations. In fact, never discuss prices in dollars. Start thinking in pesos. I'm trying to get a sense of the weather during labor day week (landing in first half of September). I originally planned to visit Medellin then Cartagena but from everything I've read it would be pouring rain on the coast. I'm looking for information from more seasoned travelers on where the best weather would be: Medellin? Bogota? Armenia? Am I correct in writing off the coast until at least the second half of November?

Org / Colombia, a former reliable source, has a huge bug in their system. It says my friend makes like 3 millions. A professor makes 5-6 millions. A waiter 2, even 3 million. I have criticized the site, which has been accurate for years, but now has gone astray. 60% earn no more than the +700-1 million pesos. 40% of GDP ends up in the pockets of the 10% most richest, so numbers are totally wrong.

But among fancy Guapas & Alfa males in their late 20th or early 30th, can't accept that Colombia is poor, even if it makes progress, the % ending up of GDP growth goes to the-haves, while the middle class growth is at 1% of the population, up to 23%, but since there has been no improvement in "Gini-Index", Colombia still has the most unfair income distribution, except 10 African countries, that are rarely capitalistic countries with a stable currency, bank system etc. Bolivia is also at that level.

Still cocky career people deny this; claiming to make wages that are on almost 1st world level, with a cost of living that is 35-50% of a 1th level country, so they have more income, net net, than New Yorkers or CEOs in Western Europe.

Of course if you take into account for all the black money, that pops up as white somewhere, a few lucky people make good money, but they are a small minority.

The exception should be the center of Bogot where wages and prices has been climbing up to if not 1th but the 2th world wages and still went up to 2014. The boom that started 2002 has come to an end. Colombia's exports depend on oil prices, 50%, while Venezuela is at 90%. Easy come, easy go!

Estrato 6, just like in Argentina, make a lot of money in their home country, until the first signs of crisis occur. Then they move the money to countries with low or none tax on capital. Let's the crisis push down worth of real estate and capital intense industries and wages; then they buy back what they sold just a few years ago, for a fraction of the cost. This will never change. Argentina has done it since the 60's, also changing currency every 5-10 years, which the "Estrato 6" class know of well beforehand. Nor will the ambitious middle class attack the real enemy, they are simply to afraid, if not of Estrato 6, so to loose one's face in public and become an odd figure. No the middle class prerfer to keep as much a distance to the poor as possible instead. And often mock them. Both personally and as a class. They don't dare to respond.

As a monger; it's an expensive hobby, and that may lead you to think that average wages are much higher than they are.

Also restaurants; You stay in Estrato 5-6 barrios and of course you can easily mislead.

The enormous influx of drugs into the US and Europe are out of necessity and impossible to stop. The major part goes to Colombian and US and Western persons, banks and companies that hide this so very well.

But for an ambitious 33 yo old economist with complex or a prepago / sugar-baby, etc. This seems incomprehensible.
