If you come into the country, stay less than or up to 90 days, and then leave, you can then re-enter and stay up to another 90 days. You don't have to do anything in particular to do this. The extension only applies in situation 1. And without some other type of visa you cannot get an extension to stay more than 180 days.
Do you mind pointing to your reference for this data? I'm also being told that if you stay for instance, 65 days, and then you leave. An immigration guy said that counter picks up where it left off when you left, and you only have 25 days before you need to submit an extension, not another 90 days.

I've always had to pay the 99 k cop fee online to get a 90 day visa extension on the tourist visa, as I was under the impression you could only stay 90 days on a tourist visa without an extension.

But when I got to the airport they marked a "90" on my passport, meaning I have another 90 days here, having already spent 84 in the spring.

They said I get 180 total days per calendar year, and the 90 *consecutive* days restart when you leave the county. The extension is only if you want more than 180 total days in a calendar year.

So, for future reference to anyone reading this, you get 180 total days a year in Colombia as a tourist, but cannot stay more than 90 consecutive days.

The consecutive day counter restarts when you leave the country, and the 180 days restart on Jan. 1st every year.

All that headache for nothing! LOL.

Great, thanks for the tips. I do find Latin America cupid quite entertaining browsing and getting all the likes and emails (that neither of us can read), but want to find a nice penpal where I can practice my Spanish and work up enough of a relationship to go visit.

The problem there is most of the women also have basic profiles so you really can't communicate. I've also looked at Tinder without much success. Let me know if there are any sites anyone recommends to meet and chat with Colombian women. Thanks in advance.

That I don't need to do the online renewal since I left before 90 days and reentered the country. My new stamp in my passport says 90 days, and I will be using less. Presumably if I came back in and only had 3 weeks left, my stamp would say 21 days. After googling the phrases, the language used seemed to say the additional paperwork was needed if you wanted to stay consecutively for more than 90 days up to the 180.

So I still might be wrong but it makes sense to me. I am curious what immigration tells you.

I am taking lessons and learning. But very doubtful I could navigate a government office with what I know in Spanish. Knowing vocabulary and some basic phrases does not mean I know Spanish. This is my third time back this year that is pushing me over the 90 days and language is hard for me. Not that I really need to explain anything to you. And even if I wasn't, I don't judge other people that come to the US that don't speak English.

If you want to stay the full 180 days on the tourist visa, you have to file the 90 day extension on the Colombian immigration website in the "prorroga de permanencia" section and pay the 99 k cop fee.

Just google "Colombia tourist visa extension" , there's a lot of websites that show the step by step process.

I've done this the past three years, staying 80 or so days in the spring / summer, filing an extension online, and heading back to complete the 180 days in the fall. This time they're just denying the online extension with no explanation.

But yea, thanks for the tip funlovr, It looks like I'll only have like 5-6 days left when I land, so I'll be heading straight to the immigration office when it opens in the morning to file the extension in person. Fingers crossed.

So if that's true, either leave the country for a day to reset the clock, or cut your trip short 8 days to avoid the issue.

Curious about your situation though since it would apply to me too. I really hope you are wrong though.

One consideration is Colombia calculates days as all days you've spent any time in Colombia. For example, if you arrive Monday night and leave the next morning, that is two days, even though you were there less than 24 hours.

I have done this exact thing the past three years, and extended my visa online through the Colombian immigration website (prerroga de permancia) from 90 to 180 days with zero problems.

I have submitted the extension paperwork three times this past month, hoping it was just a disgruntled employee rejecting me, and each time received a "rechazo" (rejection) response from them with no other explanation.

    Pretty annoying.

I even included my return ticket back to the states, along with my passport bio and entry / exit stamp from earlier this year in the documentation.

I'm going to have to go in person to the immigration office when I land for the visa extension, I hope to god they extend it.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks for your time as always.
