After benefiting a long time from all the good information posted on this forum about many places, it is now time for me to give something back. Because I finally have something new to contribute to this body of knowledge, in this, my first post!

Barranquilla seems to be widely under-estimated and under-visited. So I'm happy to report that I found some good new places which make a trip here worthwhile!

We only spent one night in Barranquilla, so not much to report. (Day 1 I was in Panama, you can find that in the Panama City thread. I was traveling alongside Biff Dangler).

We landed in Barranquilla mid-afternoon and took a taxi to our apartment near Hotel del Prado that we had booked on AirBnB. After getting settled we decided to walk to Parque Washington for dinner and drinks. We were there early, but had no luck finding any chicas. After that we headed to La Trajo, the most popular salsa bar in town.

After a handful of beer and no luck on ladies at La Troja we headed to Parque Suri Salcedo. We were told by a few people that there would be chicas around. The park was lively on a Friday night, but after walking the park for over an hour, we found no chicas. We even explored the surrounding blocks to make sure we were not missing something.

Hotel Casa Boston, Calle 58 No 46-117. They have a discount rate if you're staying 12 hours or less (e. G. 11 pm to 10 am). Ask for "pasanoche" and pay 50 k for 1 person. I had a girl visit me in the morning and there was no extra charge.

Hotel Mi Hogar, Cra 46 #58-40 40-60 k, (around the corner from Casa Boston) bathroom, TV, AC, good bed Similar to Casa Boston, but not quite as nice and a little cheaper.

I have to say a big Thank you to Cerebro. It's in no small part due to his excellent posts about Barranquilla that I chose to come here rather than go to Cartagena. I seem to have a few things in common with him: in my 40 ies, I speak fluent Spanish, I like walking and going on busses, I'm always looking for value for money, and I'm also quite a cerebral person.

I am here over two weeks already, all the while relentlessly researching what this town has to offer. And I have to say, it's great. I have had not even one experience that I would call bad. There is no tourism here (except at Carnaval), so nobody treats you like a dumb tourist. (I cannot comment on how different this would be if you don't speak spanish.) It's just normal everyday life, and people are friendly, helpful and polite, like elsewhere in Colombia.

After spending seven days of fun in Medellin, I purchased online a viva Colombia flight round trip for about 200 k or 80 dollars to go to Barranquilla for a short trip. That price is quite a bargain for a RT flight. The Viva Colombia plane was pretty decent and the service pretty good with mostly Colombian locals flying. You don't get charged for a carry on weighting no more than 6 kilos or 13 pounds, but you get penalized 60 K or 24 USD if you go over the 6 kilos limit. But I was good with my travel book bag and weight. I flew on a Thursday and it was a 1 1/2 hour flight from Medellin to Barranquilla. I found out that Viva Colombia also has cheap flights from Medellin to Cartagena, Cali, Bogota, Santa Marta, San Andre, etc. I was at the airport in Barranquilla at about 10 pm. There are public buses for 1700 K or. 70 USD cents at the airport that you could take to the City, but all the buses already stopped running God damn it! Being the cheap guy that I am, I was forced to take a taxi for 26 dollars or 65000 COP. I headed to Boston town as I made a reservation at Hotel Casa Boston located at Calle 58 No 46-117, Barrio Boston http://www.booking.com/hotel/co/casa-boston.html. for 70 k or 28 USD for the night. While the taxi was driving me to the city I noticed a tremendous changed from my last trip in December 2014. It was like a Ghost town while passing every neighborhood. I asked the taxi driver is something happened and why there were no people outside at 1030 pm. He stated that it was normal and people were in going to bed. He stated that people start to go out on Fridays and Saturdays. He stated that the best months to be in Barranquilla were December, January and February (end of Carnival) as those are the months that people party or rumba the most in Barranquilla.
