I just returned from a trip to BAQ. Lucitania was great. I used KiKay for my taxi as always. I've been going there for about 10 years. Stayed at Puerta Del Sol for $50 a night including breakfast. One of my favorite Colombian cities.

Peter: I LOVE the country more than ANY I've known (over 40 and counting), despite its warts. And I use "Locombia" in the MOST affectionate way, as is "loveably crazy." No insult was intended AT ALL; in fact, I HATE the perception Americans have that ALL Colombians are guerillas or traqueros. It is a VERY small segment (FARC claims 16K under arms, ELN about 5K) that creates a bad image FOR ALL.

My newest cybernovia is a Barranquillera (as was my very first) so I shall be heading your way before too long and would enjoy sharing a cold one and discussing the country we BOTH love.
And I TOTALLY agree with you that the drug problem is OURS, not THEIRS (because even if Plan Colombia succeded in wiping out the drug trade in Colombia (and OF COURSE it can NEVER succeed), Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela etc would step up and fill the void.) Blaming Colombia for the AMERICAN drug addiction is scapegoating of the worst kind.

Finally, I must respectfully disagre that discussion of safety issues is inappropriate. I believe it irresponsible to JUST discuss the PROS (meaning the positives, NOT meaning hookers) without acknowledging the Cons of Colombia as a destination. Let people have ALL siders of the issue then they can decide for themselves. "There is no better arbiter of truth than the "marketplace of ideas"".

I have cautioned many times in the past that Colombia is very dangerous. Why do people just not accept this. You do not have to put your hand into the fire to know that it is going to get burnt.

I remember recently, not quite when, there were bombs in the supermarkets in Barranquilla and in December three foreigners were kidnapped. This coupled with the usual Colombian urban violence does not make this city safe. It is possibly safer than Cali but who knows.

The bomb yesterday in Cartagena was discovered in the plant room of the Hotel Capilla del Mar on the 22nd floor. The police threw it in the swimming pool and made a controlled explosion.

What the people who know and understand Colombia are saying is this: By all means came but be careful.

I am sure that you will agree with all of the above.

The recent bombing was about 1/3 the way from CTG to BAQ.
The city of BAQ has its share of violent crime, of course, but it has not witnessed the spate of kidnappings which have afflicted other areas. Get 100 miles SOUTH or EAST of the city , however, and all bets are off. La Guajira is not "100s of miles away", nor is the Magdalena Valley South of the City (where the river lies).

ALL - FARC is out bombing the hell out of different areas of the country (Northwest Colombia (normally safer)). Many dead and many wounded.

This to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their start of the "war."
