1: The danger in Santa Marta RIGHT now is the yellow fever outbreak which has already killed several people. Read the Barranquilla newspapers' online editions.

    2. REgarding the ID thing, I have passed SEVERAL cedula checks just by showing a California drivers license, including once outside Casa Narino (the White House of Colombia) after I had taken a photo. The Men in Black promptly stoped the taxi, made me delete the photo, then inspected my drivers license and sent me on my way. While you are TECHNICALLY required to carry a passport at all timnes, I NEVER do. Not telling YOU GUYS to do that, but just sharing my experience.

    3. Dutchman: what do you mean there are 8-9 girls: you mean they all look to be 8s or 9s on the scale of 10 or there are only 8 or 9 chicas available at Rodadero (which I find doubtful).

    OK, get to go!

    Remember:

Every female is a possible target, the trick is how you communicate.

Once you are in Barranguilla. Don;t forget to visit Rodadero in Santa Marta. It looks like Boca Chica but 3 times bigger. Policia de turismo every 500 meters. You are safe! Only 8~9 girls.

    Mr. Solo,

    Thank you for your report.

On the issue of the ID. The best advice I have gotten is to carry a color photocopy of your passport with you. And leave your real one at the hotel safe.

In Colombia purchases of certain items require the store to write down your passport number.

I also carry my driver's license.

As a person who has been traveling to the coastal cities of Colombia for 7 years now, and married to a Colombiana, I must respectfully disagree with Mr. Solo on his 22-1 women to men ratio! This is just not true! It may seem that way to you, however, because you are a non-colombian and may the ability to help colombians, you "may" be approached more, and that my distort your figures.

Lets not forget, Colombia is a third-world country. And if you are a non-colombian and especially if you are an American, you are a hot commodity.

Regardless, of why you travel to Colombia, always remember to use common sense! Mr. Solo is correct with his advise for those of you who are not from an urban enviornment or street smart. But, for those who are from any large city in the US, you shouldn't have any problems, if you are not out there looking for trouble!

    Sorry,

I attempted to send a few photos, but they are too large! Can someone tell me how to change/reduce the size so that they can fit the standards here?

IMHO Ferolga is not the only member who viewed Solo's testimonial (it wasn't really a report IMHO) with skepticism. b I, too, am sensitive to spam advertising guides or chulos posted by purported satidsfied clients.

That does NOT mean solo was deserving of personal attack or insult, but it CERTAINLY is fair game to comment on the fact that it was solo's first post and it appeared to be more a sales pitch than an OBJECTIVE evaulation. Ferolga was man enough to apologize for personalizing the issue and I commend him for that.

    All right,

I apologize for expressing my well honed skepticism in a vituperative manner. I thank Jackson and the person that reported my insulting remarks for allowing me the chance to reconsider the way I express my thoughts. I do agree that expressing one's doubts in a civil and decorous manner is more conducive to good communication.

The fact remains, the glowing recommendation of Mister Solo for Mr. Solano left me exasperated by the lack of certain characteristics that would allow me to accept it as reliable.

The lack of other posts by Mister Solo raised a flag. As did the lack of concrete details, such as addresses or names of places that he visited. To me it sounds like disguised self-promotion.

I understand that Mister Solo doesn't have to write a report that convinces me that he is a satisfied customer and not otherwise. But understand that my motives for questioning the identity of the poster is that I want to make sure that I a hearing reliable information.

In the past, I've felt burned by glowing reports of certain places that didn't provide a more balanced view.

I exhort you to provide addresses of places you enjoyed.

Once again, my apologies to you Mister Solo and to you Mr. Solano.

    Yours truly,

    Ferolga777

In regards to the recent post about the bombings and recent kidnapping in B/quilla. I just returned for 10 days in B/quilla. I was in El Centro near vivero/Sol were the bombings were. Latintraveller is correct, it was because of the retailers refusal to pay the "blackhand" money.

But the entire time I was there, I was not threaten once. There were many stares, but I stared back and that was the end of that. I was even in the most dangerous parts of town (if you are white, blue eye type I would suggest you don't travel to these parts) and I didn't have any problems La Floris, area around calle 72 near playboy and etc.).

Did very little mongering. Although that was my plan at first, I sorta fell in lust with a 21 yr old who I met a month before on amigos.com. However, I insisted she not stay with me my first nite (boy was that a hard one) so I could monger. Had two for one price on calle 72 & cra 42 area. Price 100,000 pesos about $40. They wanted to stay all nite, but I told them to leave after they started eating up my high price items at the room bar (that is another story - I guess they borrowed a page from the US hotel industry). I didn't get any photos of them, I got the impression they weren't gonna be too happy with my request when one of them told me that she has an American boyfriend living in FL and will soon be married (poor dude).

Although the hotel was nice, great location/price with great service and free b/fast, I found out during check out that they charged me xtra for having company in my room. The name of the hotel is Versille right off of 72 street (calle 72). However, if needed I have a listing of other hotels.

    Cuidate,

    Vallenato aka El Negrito

Following the three bombings in Barranquilla last week, I now understand that yesterday three foreigners were kidnapped in Barranquilla.

All three are believed to be residents of Barranquilla. Reports indicate that one is American, one Spanish and the third Italian.

Also, there is a high level security warning for Cartagena. This has been met with unprescedented levels of security in Cartagena.

I understand the three bombs in Barranquilla, two against Olimpica and one against Exito, both retailers, were a consequence of their refusal to pay the terrorists.

Letīs not get paranoid but use this information wisely.

    Take care

    Latintraveller
