Posts: 887Normal Rip-offs From Waiters in Santa Fe
- EVERY single waiter will scam the tourists. I don't think that is an exaggeration. Some are worst then others.
- Numbers are from last year. With inflation as high it is, it might have changed a little bit.
- My friends and I went to the strip club near Troya. We had 3 drinks. Waiter charged us 40 K. Way too much. Since my friend paid and didn't care, that waiter scammer will do it again.
- We went to Troya. We had a few drinks plus a drink for a girl. It seems the prices are the same for us and the girl. He tried to charge us 80 K. Since I was paying, and I cared (not about the money, but the principle), I went to the bartenders. They are usually honest. The price was 51 or 52 K.
- At Troya last year, the price for a Corona was 22 K. Some guy said the waiter charged him 40 K. Yes, you got ripped off.
- California seems to be the worst. Again a waiter attempted to charge me 15 K for a beer. A beer that probably was 6 or 7 K. I don't trust the bartender at California. The bartenders at Troya and Venus are honest. The waiters at Venus aren't that bad. They "only" tried to charge me 8 K for a 6 K Poker beer. LOL!
- I tip, but I hate to be scammed. I don't see locals tip for 1 beer. Is that the norm?
- I think the waiters get a commission for each drink they sell. Maybe 2 K? One method I tried is to tell them upfront, I don't pay 100% tip, but I will give a 2 K tip. Most / all waiters should be ecstatic for a 2 K tip for 1 drink.

The Transmilenio also provides a couple of options. If you're staying near the airport, pick a hotel close to the Portal Dorado station. A short walk to the station and it's a quick ride to the Calle 22 station, no transfers or changing buses.
Or, if you're traveling light, get on the SITP bus at the airport for Portal Dorado, where you can catch the bus to drop you off close to your hotel. For example, Hotel Ibis Museo is right by the Museo Nacional station. No traffic, no taxistas, just a quick trip and you're ready to go.
One more hack. Pick a hotel or apartment close to the TransMilenio and you can almost completely eliminate the need for taxis.
My first time in Bogota I spent a few hours riding each of the lines from end to end. Midday most of the buses were nearly empty. You'll see a lot of the city and you'll notice a strange thing. Stores in Bogota are grouped together. You'll see 3 blocks where every business is a hardware store, or a bicycle shop, or a lighting store.

- Info from last year. Should still be the same.
- My friends and I went to a club during the weekday, about a mile north of Zona T. I'm guessing it was Olympia, but I didn't check the name. Regardless, all the clubs seems to be the same.
- We got there around 1 am on a weekday. Not that crowded. But at around 2 am, it got a lot more crowded.
- Some people say that the same girls who work Santa Fe work at these type of clubs. Probably correct in which the same type of girls work at both places. But I'm a half empty type of guy. IMO, the same type of marginal girls who work at Santa Fe (the best of Santa Fe) also work at the northern clubs. Most of the girls at that northern club were marginal. In my engineering Bell curve, I saw 1 girl who I would consider a 7, maybe an 8. Most girls were 6's. But those people who think that Pattaya Beach Road has 7's and 8's, will think that all the girls are 9's and 10's. More power to them!
- The base price of beers was 30 something. But they add a service charge and IVA (VAT? of 18 or 19% WTF? No bar / restaurant adds a VAT). Each beer was around 50 K.
- When you pay here, or the girls, or similar type of places, pay with exact change. We paid, expecting to get around 20 K or 30 K change, but waiter did come back for couple of minutes. My friends didn't care, so we left. Since we didn't care, shit like this will happen again.

Bars and Meseros.
Guys quick update. I'm mid 40's and speak Spanish.
Texas and California does hire lots of meseros. They can seem overwhelming at times. I am super cool with them I actually helped one of them move to the US. And as cool as I am with all of them, I still don't spend much time on those 2 clubs. Unfortunately they are extremely mismanaged. And yes outside they can be annoying however once inside sometimes it's hard to get someone to get you a drink because they are outside being annoying. LOL.
My opinion is don't feel threatened by them or anyone else in a uniform from any bar. Unfortunately it's the culture there. It's extremely annoying at times and really unprofessional in my opinion. But when in ROME...
Also try to carry 10 mil bills when you go out to these places. Getting change there is a pain in the ass, specially earlier in the night. They don't have a cashier. The mesero is responsible to try to get you change. And if all you carry is 50 mil bills that can sometimes be a problem. The bad apples will try to see if you forget about your change. Or who even served you. Same applies to later in the night if you're drunk.
Many great bars have gone down hill due to bad management PAISAS and piscina the perfect 2 examples. They have great location and facilities. But no brains.
There are several new bars opening. There is a cozy one right by the entrance of California, on street level. I met the owner he seems to be doing things right. Should be a good place to watch World Cup games. Pink night club is far from being ready. And the black building where JOIA used to be is under construction as well. Except the guy who rented out the place and was remodeling it, is currently in jail. So who knows when that project will end.
Also. If you find yourself questioning why are all these places like this?? Why doesn't someone break the mold? It's because one lady owns most of the bars on the lower street. From ATUNES, VENUS, FIEBRE, TROYA, A'TONYS. Something like that. And yes California and Texas is the same owner as well. Also a lady. Her father left her the bares when he passed away a couple years ago. He seems to have been a well known and respected man in the neighborhood.
Hope this helps. Stay alert. Be respectful don't be a pushover, and don't make yourself a target by flaunting money around. And you can have a great time. The hunt is half the fun!

Posts: 43Advise on exchange for clothes
Got a girl who wants to exchange for clothes. Since I don't know the prices of clothing, how should I approach this. She wants shopping, should I just put a cap on a shopping spree? What have folks done when it's not money.
Thanks.

Riding Transmilenio you need a card that you buy in station for 6-8 mil and then you charge it up-.
Sometimes I have forgot the card and payed another passenger to let me use theirs at the turnstyle.
It's about 3 mil to ride.
Not Crowded if you ride off peak-- Certain buses stop every stop and others are express and may go for miles without stopping-.
Usually the stops are listed by the designated door for that bus-.
Some buses are less crowded during rush hour sometimes 2 of the same bus will come close together.
There is musical and dramic entertainment sometimes-- Also Buy Candy!!
There are many routes going all over so you have to know where you want to go.
Going North on Carracas use buses with a be in them.
Going South from the North Autopista-- you want stops on Calle 19/22 / 26.
If you are taking the Transmilenio line Carrera 7 the stations near Santa Fe are SanDiego and Las Nieves.
A guy I know got robbed early in the morning at Calle 19 -- they robber climbed the platform-- but it was very desolate-.
I have gone all over and never had a problem-- Every ride is a scene out of Narcos.

Currently in Bogota. Exchange rate is higher than ever! I exchanged dollars at 4750. Amazing. Santa Fe is better now than it has been in years. Seems like things are getting back to normal.

So when I withdrew 900 k last week, it would normally be around 185 after my bank conversion plus fees. It turned into 197 with the new one.
Unfortunately, I still think that's the best I can get considering they will let me withdraw 900 k in one go, max I've seen at other ATMs is 500 k so even if they did charge in pesos, the fees ID get from multiple transactions will kill what I would've saved.

The second trick is to start working your way towards the door, 3 or 4 stops early. At each stop, you shift position by a few feet. When you reach your station, say "disculpe me", lower your shoulder and make like a running back trying to get across the goal line.
There's no sense in getting angry about it. At times it's inevitable. Enjoy it.
I once waited 45 minutes for a train in Medellin. Breakdown in the system stopped all trains. After 15 minutes leaving was next to impossible and I began to worry about the platform collapsing (Estadio station). When trains finally started to arrive I waited until the 5th one before crowding on. There was absolutely no room for any more people when we left the station. At Suramerica station somehow another 20 or 30 got on. At Cisneros, when more were pushing on, someone said something I don't recall, but the whole car busted up laughing. It's only a short trip from there to San Antonio, but it was all jokes and laughter the rest of the way.
If you can't change a situation, find something to appreciate. I appreciated that I'm tall enough my nose wasn't pressed into someone's sweaty armpit.

If you want to use Facebook you are going to the wrong city. It's not a big thing for prepagos in Bogota. A few years ago you could find Bogota girls on Twitter by searching "prepago" and "masaje. "
