    Layover in Bogota

    Hi all,

I have a layover in Bogota of about 10 hrs reaching 6 am. And I know zero Spanish. I am of Indian origin so brown. Will the brown help?

What would be my best bet. I am looking for a cheap hotel to rest for couple of hours near some daytime action as I have to skip town around 3 pm.

    Thanks all in advance.

    SOMM.

One thing guys take for granted when traveling to Latin America is that you can be robbed at gun / knife-point anywhere at anytime of the day when by yourself or small group. If you don't accept that you should not travel. Don't kid yourself that staying in El Poblado will keep you safe. Safest method (short of never leaving your room LOL) is to taxi everywhere and walk as little as possible, day or night. I did something riskier than I usually do in September. I walked from Plaza Botero to New Life. It was late morning about 11 am and there were some colorful characters walking east on calle 52 I think. I have never before walked as much in Centro much so I wanted to check more of it out. This trip I walked more, and it's overrated. Taxi (Make that Uber) everywhere going forward. That's if they can find me, they seem to get lost too often. And when you try to cancel, they want to charge you. You just dispute it and it credits you. One dumbass driver did circles for 20 minutes a few blocks from me, so finally I canceled.

Less selection, but good quality. Aguila beers are more expensive at Troya COP 8 K vs Atunes COP 3 K or 4 K.
I always will tip the maid 1-2+ mil as we walk into the room-- I think you may buy a few extra minutes. Sometimes anyhow.

Actually trannies can go wherever they want. But generally are on 22nd and there's a big trannie stroll a couple blocks south. They do wander through Santa Fe's main red light area sometimes.

After breakfast I got a hankering for something genuinely touristy. So after a little more exploring downtown I got lunch at a subways then called my cab driver pal because I'd finally resolved to visit Monserrate, the white cathedral on a mountain overlooking the city. Naturally it's a heck of a tourist attraction and I was coming in 10 days before Pope Francis was scheduled to visit the country. I took the Teleferico (cable car) to the cathedral itself, which is over 10,000 feet above sea level. I was still adapting to being in Colombia as it was, but Monserrate gave me a chance to become reacquainted with altitude sickness. Anyway Monserrate was ornate and well decorated inside, had a black madonna and stained glass windows, and was worthy of being a cathedral at the top of a mountain. But it's also a tourist attraction, complete with pastry shop, restaurant and exercise area, so around the side and to the back of the church is an open-air bazaar where I bought some keychains whose theme was "pre-Colombian" AmerIndian culture --a miniature Aztec priest and another being a miniature aztec headdress.

After going through the bazaar and passing the food stands is a path leading to the top of the mountain. The very top is gated off with a huge antannae, but I got as close as I could. Like I said visiting Monserrate is the most touristy thing anyone could do in Bogota, but it was worth it and I recommend it to anyone.

After coming down my driver and I got a quick bite and I got myself a shower and my driver showed me where he lived and introduced me to some of his people. He plied me with more questions about comparisons between Colombia and the US, which seemed to be is favorite subject. After a while we went back to the T-Zone. This time I wanted to visit Pisces, but literally half the club was empty, and the vibe was low so since I'd had such a good time at Troya's we went back. A Venezuelan girl who I'd had my eye on the night before wasn't in sight but before long I was buttonholed by a nice negra from Cali named Alexandra. Round face, awesome figure. We went upstairs for an hour. Took a little doing but she got the job done --albeit not until after hitting me up more than once for an extra 6 mil. She and I went at it, then in the end she reverse-cowgirl'd me to a happy ending.

As I was coming down the stairs from my session my driver was coming up the stairs with a female. I made the rounds on the floor and saw some contenders and while I knew it was too soon for me to go again I most interested in satisfying my need for excess. Then I saw the "Venezuelan" I'd been looking for, she said her name was Erica, and I wanted to cross her off the list. Upon questioning she told me she wasn't a Venezuelan at all, rather a Colombiana. Not sure how I got mixed up on that one.

Despite my, and her, best efforts there was lots of hammering, but no leche. I was proud of my effort, but had to face facts that I'd asked a tad too much of Kent Jr too soon. I'd tried to schedule some appointments with some of the girls outside of the club, but they all gave the same inflated figure 250 k. Reminded me of the puta mafia in Jaco. I didn't even need my driver to tell me that was a no-go. I had one more day in the city and was curious about how worthwhile the girls standing in the doorways might be, so made a mental note to try one the next day.

The altitude fatigue and sessions had left me bone tired, so when I went to bed I was out like a light.

    Sunday, August 27th.

Woke up, got a slice of pizza from a street vendor breakfast and then dozed off again. I realized that I would be flying out to Medellin the very next day and hadn't done my laundry. Being Sunday in a Catholic country I feared the place would be largely shut down and it was. I called my driver and he said he'd try to help. After visiting a couple of places that were closed we finally found one that was open for a few more hours- Easy Lavanderia. The cost was pricey for a load, 22 k, but they were the only game in town. After taking my clothes back to my habitacion and packing them we went back to the old standby, Zona-T.

Tryoa's was played out, and Pisces was dead --for the record the girls said 120 k for 30 minutes. I passed. Too many girls who are as pretty (and much prettier) to pay that.

Then I remembered that I wanted to try some street meat. Walked around the block and spied a buxom mature chick who called herself Gina. She had an easy smile and wore yoga pants and a barely-there spaghetti strap top with huge implants. 2 hours for 150 mil. I probably could have negotiated her down, but I wasn't in the mood to haggle so I agreed. Just behind where she stood were the rooms. Speaking of which the room was cold, but I had been briefed on what to expect and knew that you had to provide your own heat. Strangely the room had a TV in it playing porn of course. They could have kept the TV, how about a space heater and some towels!

Gina got naked and while her body had some miles on it she made it a point to flirt and be extra playful. The older Colombianas tend to try to make up for their lack of youth with an abundance of friendliness. Works for me.

I got my first leche in missionary, and after a brief siesta and some more horizontal tango Gina wound up finishing me manually. Hey a win's a win.

I said good night to my driver and told him I'd be staying in touch. Hopefully next time I would carve out more time to chat with his folks and associates and hopefully make more friends. He offered that if I ever needed a place to crash while in Medellin I was welcome at his place.

I went home to sleep and get ready for my morning flight to Medellin where I'd start off by staying at the Mansion (M1) for a couple of nights. In closing Bogota turned out to be a really great trip, though again, it's always best to cultivate local contacts, and it's mandatory for folks who speak little Spanish --I wouldn't visit Colombia at all if you speak zero-Spanish. I will definitely visit again, though this time I would make sure that my accomodations are definitely guest friendly. I passed many a hotel both in Bogota and Medellin and most of them had some sort of signage up saying they don't allow sex tourism, and around town you frequently see signs regarding child exploitation and the like. Seems somebody is concerned Colombia may get a reputation and they want to push back against that publicly. Considering their how long and ghastly the drug wars were there it's understandable.

Sorry for not having pics, but that's another thing. Maybe it's just me but seemed the girls were very averse to pictures. Almost like they were working from a script they all said the same thing, they were terrified of being put up on the internet, or they had some horror story about an amiga who got exposed by some careless dude online. I wanted to insist on more than one occasion, but then I always thought about how that might seem to them. Perhaps if I had gotten a girl back to my rental they would have been more open to it, but alas. As it is Colombia made a good first impression.

From here it was on to Medellin for a week. Will be posting that part soon.

Smarter to avoid South of Calle 22

I've been told several times by locals, better to stay on or to the north of Calle 22. (North is to the right if you are walking from the Transmillenio. The Calle numbers are rising.).

Personally, having walked through the area you mentioned during the day with a local, I highly doubt you will find a gem around Calle 20 that you wouldn't find in the relatively safer area.

By the way, another local told me he was robbed at knifepoint during the day once in Santa Fe. I've never had any problems, but it is better to be aware.

    El Centro at Night

I've walked from the Bar Maracaibo to Conejitas, a fairly short distance at night, not even 10 pm yet and theres always some sketchy shit going on, especially on Carrera 51. I walk fast and deliberately and never order more than a single beer that I never finish. Be careful. Safe travels mates.

To me it is nothing. But if you are afraid of downtown Medellin at night, I do not think you will be able to handle Santa Fe at night. Santa Fe is 24 hours though and there are less people during the day. At night there are more girls, more guys partying, and more police. I usually do not see more than 1 homeless beggar there at night. They will just stand there waiting for me to give them something when I am posted up on a corner. I usually just let them get tired of waiting then they walk off.

Personally I wouldn't walk around Santa Fe during the wee hours of the morning. Can't say how dangerous it is at that time, because it's not a time when I would go.
