While the Northern parts of Bogota are safer, it's by no means a walk in the park. I've had many lady friends and student friends robbed at knife point or with a gun. Most occur near the bus stops or around the colleges and they usually work in teams so be aware of who's looking at you. Student backpacks are full of phones and laptops and they know it. In fact, many of them have been robbed multiple times. I cruised SF with Woodman a few years ago and his advice is spot on. However I felt the later it got the more vulnerable I felt. My advice would be to be out of there by 8 or 9 pm. Also, remember its always advisable to call your own taxi then to jump into any street cab. I have been traveling to Colombia 5 or 6 times a year for about 6 or 7 years now and have never encountered a problem but I still will never let my guard down even in the barrios of Chico Norte or Chico Navarra, where I usually stay.

You are inventing statistics. As per link below for 2015 comparison there has been 48 robberies per 100,000 in Quebec. Even if you add all assault types it is still about 600 per 100,000 significantly less than 2000 for Chapinero.

Don't worry, it was just a comment for my own life. Crime statitics will not prevent me from living my life and going anywhere in Colombia. But I understand perfectly that for other people safety is more important, so I recommend them other areas than Santa Fe. Anyone his own life. Most important is that you enjoy your stay, return home safely with good memories from Colombia.

While Chapinero may have 150,000 population, it is surrounded on 3 sides by the rest of the city, with a lot of street traffic. If they have 3000 robberies per year, that's just over 8 per day. Figuring roughly 90,000 additional people per day (visitors and employees), it gives you about a 1 in 30,000 chance of being victim of a crime.

Of course, that's a low estimate because there are a lot of businesses in Chapinero and a lot of visitors. That is probably too high of a risk for you, but for most people it's acceptable.

For comparison, let's do the Chapinero per capita crime rate, 3000/150,000 = 2000/100,000. Now let's compare to the province of Quebec, Canada, 5909/100,000 (2006 statistics). So, the incredibly dangerous neighborhood of Chapinero is 3 times safer than the 2nd safest province in Canada, considered by most to be one of the safest countries in the world..

Info on Bogota is as recent as 2015 and it is not safe. Not much point to hide the facts as it may encourage some people to get too relaxed or loosen guards. Over 3000 street robberies in Chapinero alone which has a small population of 150,000 only and is supposed to be the safest place in entire Colombia (or that is what my potential airbnb hosts told me).

I have also read in reviews that people often complaining about looks too! Though I see plenty of beautiful pictures in Bogota escorts sites! You do whatever you think will work for you. You're obviously the expert. However, until you actually go to Bogota, walk the streets and visit the different neighborhoods, don't try to tell the people who combined have spent thousands of hours there, how safe it is.

JjBee62 thanks for all your great advice! Had a look around there on google maps, think was taken maybe early morning as the streets are quite empty apart from some chicas here and there. Like I said I still need to research a lot, but I see many of the types I like, curvy and natural looking. Thinking of coming to Colombia soon for the first time. Have been looking at some videos online taken walking around the RLD of Bogota and Medellin. From what I can tell the RLD in Bogota is downtown, is that right? What I was wondering is, are these areas safe to walk around during the day for a gringo, albeit a dark haired and spanish speaking one such as me. This is the best answer I have ever read to answer the endless discussions about safety. I have visited 80 different countries including each from the top 10 most dangerous countries of the world. I have fucked probably 500 different girls, including the unavoidable AO, I practized most of existing extreme sports, took risks in my professional life. What hasn't been said is the warnings about security are often outdated or exaggerated. This is especially true with red light districts.

Whenever you read reviews, first pay attention to the date of the review. For Bogota, most of the "too dangerous" reviews are 10 years old. Like any big city, there are risks to be aware of, but I will take Santa Fe over the worst areas of Chicago, a city 1/4 of the size of Bogota. That doesn't mean I would drink 10 shots of tequila and go stumbling around at 3 am, but I have no issues with walking through and checking things out.

The other thing to look for in reviews is attitude. Is the reviewer angry about something else and trashing everything?

Moralizing is another problem. Someone accidentally walks through Santa Fe and starts seeing the obvious prostitutes in every direction, maybe spots an exposed nipple, and hops online to preach. But even without any reports usually the red light district in any country even safest ones like Holland is generally unsafe. It is not hard to conclude that sitting in a classy protected hotel with security guards around and calling in escorts is safer than walking around red light district looking for street sex workers in a generally known as unsafe country as per travel advisories provided.
