Been thinking about Colombia so much the last two day I'm thinking about going the week of memorial day....except maybe Medellin or Barranquilla instead.

Can anyone post pictures of Camila/Monica whos one of flower Mike's girls? She also works at Escoses and is in Dave Davis's marriage agency. Greetings from the other side of the world... For the last 7 months I have been relocated by my company to China. I've always disliked Asian girls but I've come to realize the Asian girls in Asia are far more attractive than the ones in the states so they are growing on me and being fluent in Chinese its damn easy out here for me. ... speaking of arepas, I find them INFERIOR to what I would buy in Venezuelan areperias. I prefer the arepa being cut and stuffed, which you can get here, but still doesnt seem to taste the same. Often they will put stuff on top of the arepa, which I dont care for at all. Ill cast my vote for the Venezuelan version ...

The "que mas" greeting is used all over Colombia.

marico is heavily used in Venezuela, and it does mean maricon, but its used among friends to fuck with each other. (though tone of voice also comes into play)

they also call each other guebon constantly (meaning idiot/dumbass)

guebon is used in Cali often, but marico is not among guys and I specifically inquired about marica among girls and was told it does NOT have any homosexual tie ins at all. Why they chose that word, I have not asked and Im not sure who would know but it means girl/girlfriend the way African American women use it among themselves in the US.

asere is uniquely Cuban, most of these words are, like pana unique to Venezuela (though theyd understand it here in Cali). Parse is used in Cali heavily so it cant be specific to MDE region.

anyways, this is all street slang, which will almost never be used in polite company anyways.

I get a kick out of girls jokingly calling me guache, or patan.

plata is actually heavily used in many Caribbean Latin countries, including Cuba, DR, Ven and Colombia for starters. I suspect itd be understood anywhere.

re the club I went to the other night, it actually WAS cool, though I was slightly disappointed. The guest DJ was supposedly one of the biggest names on the continent (from Uruguay) and the entrada was steep at 30K.

It didnt really get going crowdwise (and it never got really crowded) until around 3:30 am (thats not surprising for clubs outside the city limits, they get going after 3 am). The crowd seemed a bit clickquey and of course illicit substances were the order of the night. My shirt reeked of marijuana when I got back, and people were snorting stuff out of what looked like lighters/snorters all night. I would assume there was a fair amount of X floating around as well.

It was definitely an entirely new class level of youth, etc - you wont find these people at your typical Sexta joints and for the first time I saw YOUNG girls with often unnecessary tit jobs, perhaps something Daddy (or more likely their narcotrafficker bf) bought for them when they turned 18. Strangely enough I saw a girl from my gym there! (surprised because shes a little older and an engineer)

Dark sunglasses seemed to be a popular accessory :)

on Sat night, before heading off to the electronica club, while sitting at one of my favorite Sexta bars, I got into a conversation with the bouncers, who proceeded to turn my attention to a dark shuttered window but with a tv easily visible thru the slits. Turns out they were entertaining themselves by watching people fucking backlit by that TV. At first I thought it was merely a private appt but was informed it was merely ANOTHER "reservado".

Actually I'm back from Cali again but the routine I like doing while in Cali on Sundays is pretty much the same.

I like taking a gal (either pre-arranged or the one that stayed over from Saturday night) out for Sancocho up the moutain the locals call Kilometer 18. There are many restaurants to eat at and I've been to 4 of them now. I like the drive up the mountain for the fresh cool air and the views. It gets a little cool up there so it's always good to bring a jacket or sweat shirt for the girl(s).

Great advice. One of the great things about Cali is that even though it is hot and if you don't want to wait around for the evening breeze you can escape the heat in ~15 minutes with a quick drive up into the hills. Very relaxing.

I miss the arepas de choclo right now. And champus, cholados. Unfortunately I'm stuck on the road for a month and won't make it back to Cali for another month. Thanks for the memories.

Also I'll probably be in Cali for the next puente which is May 21.

Re words... Mono- get called it all the time. Marica- on the coast(Barranquilla) I see it used 2 ways... 1) homosexual as you mentioned and 2) I actually hear it used quite often among close-knit groups of friends(guys) in the middle of a conversation.. I.e. Marica, yada yada yada..Actually one friend always says... "Marica para la voz" when there are a lot of people speaking and he is trying to get everyone's attention.
Parse... Never ever heard that one on the coast. Never. Heard it in Medellin and I had to ask my costena gf (who was with me) what the hell that person said. Didn't understand a word of it out of the paisas mouth that said it and "parse" was one of the words.

I'm new here and new to Colombia although I've been checking out another board for some time. Cubanut, who posts occasionally at the other board, emailed me some useful tips for my first Cali trip last November. Thanks again CN! Will actually be in Medellin for the 1st time (and maybe a few days in Bogotá) the week of Memorial Day. Maybe I'll run into some of you there. I'm considering staying at the Castillo but if someone can vouch for an apartment, then I might go that route.

As for the language thing, yeah I noticed both in the DVDs I have of Colombian movies and the paisas I met in Cali. . . that these folks have their own peculiar "dialect" with a lot of unique jargon. I speak semi-fluent Spanish but I have to admit, I had to go over some of those DVDs like "Rosario Tijeras" several times before I could really pick up what the characters were saying. I'm from New York, but I don't hang out or live anywhere near the neighborhoods in Queens or New Jersey where Colombians have gathered, so most of this jargon was completely new to my ears.

"Marica" is the Colombian way of saying "maricón" (faggot), but it's amusing how certain insult words can be used amongst Colombian friends when addressing or talking to each other. "Huevón" seems to be another popular one. Literally, that means big egg, but basically you're being called a dummy. :-)

"Parse" and "parsero" seem to be slang for friend but I suspect Winner71 is right in that it's not used as much outside the paisa region (Antioquia); didn't hear it in Cali, at least not from the paisa chicks I spoke with.

"Parse" reminds me of "asere" which is friend in Cuba, but you'll almost never hear that outside Cuba, (very rare at least in New York, maybe Miami's different). In NYC, I'm much more likely to hear "socio" or "compay" or maybe even the Spanglish "broder"

As for "bacano" that's the Colombian way of saying cool. In the Spanish Caribbean, New York, and Miami, you're much more likely to hear "chévere" which actually comes from Cuba. For money, "plata" seems to be just as common, if not more often used than "dinero." Also, "que más" or "que hubo" seem to be much more common greetings than "como estás" or "que tal"

My personal favorite has to be "culicagao" which means an unclean ass. It usually refers to little kids who run around with their butts dirty, but it can be used in other situations as well. If your chica calls you this, you've screwed up somewhere! :-)

I personally don't like to use too much slang because I probably would sound ridiculous, like I'm trying too hard to fit in or sound like one of the locals. I'm sure they can tell right away that my Spanish is from somewhere else. Still, it's handy to know some of the jargon.
