Well, novia robbed again at gunpoint for her cell phone!

I just get a distraught phone call from my girl, she was robbed at gunpoint in melendez which is actually a pretty nice area. They got her cellphone, thank-god she is ok I told her because people are getting killed for much lesser things lately and the over all consensus seems that Cali is getting worse and more dangerous. My suegra told me that the neighbor got robbed in a more "traditional" style by 3 men getting on the buseta on the way home and robbing all jewelry, cell phones, purses and wallets. My driver oscar in Cali told me that a gringo he picks up as well got robbed in the nicest area of Cali, granada 2 blocks from the hotel. They again got the wallets, cell phones and watches, this seem to be a new problem arising, where the ladrones are starting to hang out in the places where the money is ea granada, el penon. And el penon is where my girl got robbed last time. I for one will be more vigillant in my security there when I go and I'm going to the spy shop here and buying her some strong pepper spray.

I just got back from Medellin. My 2nd visit in Colombia. I've been to Bogota as well.

While visiting Medellin, I befriend couple of non colombians on vacation from US, Australia, England. They all said. Cali is dangerous and that they would be hesitant to go visit Cali at this time. Why is Cali dangerous? I heard about some bombing a year ago? Is there more FARC presence in Cali?

Can someone give me a lesson the Cali? Its economy? Why it would be dangerous? Even someone on this board, said Cali is the lease safest city compare to Medellin, Bogota, Cartagena.

Why do some people think that Cali is dangerous?

Probably because of the same reason why some people think Colombia is dangerous.Because they don't know any better. I have lived here in Cali for over two years and iam still alive and have all my teeth LOL

I had the opportunity to travel 3 times to Cali over the last 6 months, my two cents are: it's a nice city, it's not the most modern of cities but the caleños are nice easy going people. Safety is a factor, the caleños themselves will tell you that their city is very hot indeed. I have been told that the city is just beginning to have a comeback after many years of economic depression, the war waged by the Cali cartel 15 years ago meant a real blow to the economy of this city. In conclussion, the people are very nice and friendly, but safety is an issue.

I agree that there alot of people without jobs and you have to be careful at night. But I have been to Cali 4 times now and plan to go back in a month or so. I got sick the first time there and needed medical assitance. The hotel staff was very helpful and I was not charged for the paramedics that came to my room. I was obviously grateful to all and I was asked only for one thing from the staff. That was to tell people I know that they are good people (Colombians) and not murderers and drug trafficers as what the media tends to paint them as.

I am not saying you shouldn't be careful. Use common sense when in countries or areas like Cali. It helps in Cali if you can speak Spanish as I am fluent in Spanish I have no trouble getting around and meeting women. I have had 3 girlfriends from Cali and they all have been incredible in bed. Of course they are hoping to have you fall in love with them to take them out of Cali.

The key factor is Cali have a lot unemployed people, No many Jobs and a lot o people, A An accountant or administrator does makes the minimum wage

Just like the other guys posted: more unemployment, not nearly as much development going on like in Medellin, more desperate people, it is the center for the drug activity and occassional drug battles.

The city itself also is nowhere near as nice as Medellin. People are very friendly though.

If you watch yourself and stay in the main traveled areas you will most likely be fine. Just a bit more peligro (danger) than in Medellin, though you can find it there also for sure.

It's because the main drug activity in Colombia is there and around there. There have been about 2 bombs there this past year and I'm pretty sure a bus full of UN workers or politicians got kidnapped and murdered.

That's why people perceive it to be dangerous but it's no dramas. I've seen more shit go down in other places.

Just got back from another quick visit to Cali.

Spent most of my time with my girl there, but did get a chance to go out and about to check things out.

Visited both Escoses and Faraon at night. I definitely enjoyed Faraon much more.

Escoses is too stuffy for me, drinks exspensive, no beer and the chicas asking for too much money.
I actually have a couple friends (chicas) that work there, so it was fun to hang for a short time with them ... but no action for me.

Faraon I enjoyed. The place was full of chicas, some nice ones, some not so pretty.

I chatted with one really cute one. Pretty, thin and natural large tetas (boobs).

As far as the daytime places. I checked out most of the places World Traveler had listed for the North side of Cali.

After my hard day work, I decided not to loose time and to call Chiqui.

She was there and willing to come with me for a TLN like in January.

I told her that I would come as soon as possible to take her out.
