Here is some advice to the cheap charlies like myself, if you do use Google maps as much as I and you want to conserve how much data you burn while using it, you can download the city map before you leave while you are on WiFi just do the following.

I know that well. I always do it (did it, now traveling is out of question) when I travel to a place where a local SIM is too expensive vs. the number of days I stay, and roaming is too expensive. In Colombia, I buy or recharge a Claro SIM, I put it in my 4 G Mobile Wifi router, and I have my personal wifi for laptop and phone with me, still retaining my original number on my phone in roaming (I want people do not see me with phone off for a long time).

There is one drawback though: with offline maps, Google Maps does not calculate walking and driving shortest paths to guide you. It just gives you the map and position (for those who don't know, GPS is free and available also if phone is offline in airplane mode).

Well tonight I thought I would first venture out to a place called El Paraiso Marino Club. 25 k to get there. Cabby tried to stop at the Pley Club but just said no. The Paraiso is a dump, the girls, God bless 'them, are mediocre at best and a beer cost 8 dollars. A shot of good whiskey cost 256 dollars. This is a rip off place. They should just be honest and rob you at the door. I stayed for half a beer and left. I asked one cabby for a ride but he rushed inside to tell them I was leaving. I was told they would reopen tomorrow but with a shorter schedule, 11 pm I think. Until tonight they stayed open until 1:00 am. I figure I am fucked so I start back to my apartment. Open Google Maps on your phone (I have an android so I make no promise to the iPhone users) once Google Maps are open enter Cartagena Colombia into the search box, once the map orientates itself to showing the city of Cartagena at the bottom there should be a white section that says "Directions" "Save" "Share" buttons, but what you want to do is just put your thumb on the white part where the name of the city is and pull it up to reveal that along with buttons that say "Directions" "Save" "Share" there is now also a button with an icon that indicates download and says below it "Download", hit that button and then center the tourist section of Cartagena and hit download at the bottom. When you arrive in Cartagena, open Google Maps, click on your account photo at the far right side of the search bar, and when the drop down like menu pops up click on "Offline Maps" and pick Cartagena and your in business you are no longer using data to navigate. The security here is good. I have to unlock an iron gate and two doors to get into my apartment but I have never seen a guard on duty. The place is dark at night. I live on the third floor and never see anyone coming in. I could run a brothal out of here. The apartment is small and the water is cold but it is in the heart of the action. The only place I have read about with a greater concentration of pay 4 play women in the world is in the red light districts of Thailand, having been there myself I have to say that while the numbers are way higher, especially Walking Street in Pattaya but for me the concentration of quality is not the same. Of course it greatly depends on individual tastes and I did encounter the occasional 9 in Thailand, it just does not compare to the concentration of gorgeous chicas in Cartagena.

Street cheese hotdogs from the CP Cart on the corner of Funky Lane and Sok San Road in Siem Reap, the Nutella egg cream banana pancakes on every street corner in SE Asia, those deadly little coconut cakes, gristly beef on a stick, OMG grilled barbeque chicken bones by the railroad station at Keng Khoi Thailand, dried squid on a stick, grilled crocodile.

Please tell me someone has seen any local variety of what I call lechon. Platanos? Goat? Deep fried Chicken Feet. Middle class places or working class places?

I'm a little shocked that you think the girls have poor taste in food. My experience has been the opposite. Absent the occasional Ban Nok (hick farmer chick) you run into in Thailand, the girls know what the tasty stuff is even if they can't afford it. Ill never forget the time I took a hottie from Nonthanburi (a hickish suburb of Bangkok) to a place for "modern Thai cuisine" in Thong Lor. Plaza de LOS Coches is where the clock tower is and the circled Exito circles is the nearest large (ish) supermarket. The signage isn't great though so I am posting a photo of the front of the building as it would look when approaching from the clock tower area , the sign that says "Exito" is under that overhang and is hard to see

I don't go to Thai places in the states, unless they are small town local refugee places.
Food I'm looking for in Cart would be the same the girls eat.

About local food in Cartagena, my advice for you is the following (if you really plan to travel to Colombia in this world emergency):

1) The kiosks out of Plaza del Reloy (go out, cross the road, walk LEFT) to eat shrimp cocktail and a variety of other seafood served with the same sauce in disposable plastic cups. Sit down, eat your shrimps accompanied with fresh fruit juice (as European, I would like a glass of iced white wine, but here I suggest you go for tropical fruit) and watch people strolling. It's my snack of mid afternoon or mid day.

2) Try La Mulata, typical restaurant for local food. It's NOT a place for local poor people. It's a place for tourists, but it's excellent. Open only at day time. In Centro near an Olimpica. Find it with Google Maps.

3) At night, I prefer more classy places, which I have already recommended in other posts (Peruan, Fusion, Argentinian). Definitely I would not look for sushi.
