Just a little note that the penthouse Juan rents has just completed it's second remodeling.
The marble floors were not giving off a good shine so they were replaced with porcelain floors that are so clean you can eat off them.
All the sofas were re-skinned since the leather was looking dull.
All the bedrooms, as well as the main living room, have LCD TV's now.
There is now a small LCD screen that shows you who is in the lobby before you grant permission to enter.
There is a new metal security door in the stairwell on the floor below the penthouse that prevents anyone without keys from even entering the floor. The police were called on my one night for too much noise and gave up when they got to the security door.
The speakers have been replaced on the terrace around the Hot Tub.
We added our own private water filtration system and a new water pumping station. You could actually probably drink the water now unlike any other apartment in Laguito but we still provide free bottle water.
Ethernet has been added to the main room and the two downstairs bedrooms for those guys who have been asking to hook up their gadgets directly.
The new Belkin router shows who is online in a little screen so you can see if anyone is stealing bandwidth.
The entire place has been painted inside and out.
A new large desk has been added in the main bedroom as well as other pieces of furniture throughout.
For those who stay in it a couple years ago you would agree the elevator sucked. Well it was fixed a while ago and is very reliable now.
There are several other small things as well. I am going to make a video soon showing it room by room so people can see exactly what they are getting for the money.
If you want futher info email Juan at itts@hotmail.com

Thank you, WT69! I have looked at Hotel Playa - it looked pretty good, but having wifi in my room is one of my core requirements. I will report if Dann is guest friendly and to what degree.
I can never forget returning to DaysInn in San Hose (across the street from Del Ray) late at night with two beautiful girls and the hotel people telling me I can only bring one (1) girl with me to the room. Unable to choose, I was forced to pay for a another room just to get the second girl in which was a shame since I never even went to that extra room. In contrary, I had no such problem in Boca Chica, where a $5 tip to a guy guarding the door was more than sufficient. From my experience, smaller hotels have less restrictive practices than larger chains.

Sorry,
I recommend this Hotel. My buddy and I stayed there.
It is only a few more blocks away from LDV, on the main street across from the beach. Friendly staff and should not have any problem bringing in a guest. There is a Love Motel a few doors down, if there is a problem.
Hotel Playa, Avenida San Martin # 4-87, Bocagrande. Rates: 136k - 200k, Pool, WiFi downstairs only. Tel: (57) (5) 665 0552, 665 0579, 665 0593, Fax: (57) 95) 665 0036. E-Mail: reservas@cartagenahotelplaya.com http://www.hotelplayactg.com/home.htm

Thank you for all responses - I appreciate everyone's opinion, however I would like to stay in a hotel. I have my personal reasons, which are quite valid.
Nevertheless - I looked at various hotels and settled on Dann Hotel, which is located in the middle of the action in Laguito. I had a friend who speaks fluent Spanish to call them direct. They quoted him "Gringo" price of $325 (!) per night. My friend countered that they have a special posted on the Spanish version of their web site of 110k pesos per night. They said that it is for double occupancy and offered "another room" for 190k pesos per night. Breakfast included, but no ocean view and the Internet is $12 per day extra. They promised to e-mail me confirmation, but nothing arrived in 24 hours. No problem with me - it was expected no less - it is Latin America after all, so I'll call them back myself to confirm. I read somewhere that Dann is guest friendly, if anyone can confirm this, it will be highly appreciated.

I will post an overview of the "hotel experience" when I come back. I understand that most visitors opt for an apartment, but I found this thread to be lacking any good reviews of a hotel stay (I read about 20-30 pages back and found only passerby references to Hilton without any indication if it is indeed allows for hassle-free guests).
EDITOR'S NOTE: I would suggest that the author or another Forum Member consider posting a link to this report in the Reports of Distinction thread. Please Click Here for more information.

Posts: 385Cartagena in October or November
1) I heard that area gets a lot of rain in October so I am thinking of switching my trip to November, which has about half as much rain as October, at least in the Santa Marta area (am I spelling it right? ), which is north of Cartagena. I guess Cartagena has similar weather as Santa Marta. I would not want to be in a beach resort area like Cartagena when it rains a lot. Any info about the weather?
2) From what I am reading on this site the cheapest decent apartment or hotel room would cost at least $80 US per nite in Cartagena. Is this true? I usually don't like to go over US $50 per nite when I travel. I don't need luxury, but I don't want to stay in a dump though. Anything decent in Cartagena for under $80?
