I had something like this happen about a block from the Hotel Del Rey in Costa Rica. A group of girls, 4-5 walked toward me on the sidewalk and very quickly they put their hands in my front pockets, pulling my money out of the pockets onto the sidewalk. Last night around 9:45 I decided to walk to Clocktower and watch the mid evening activity since it was Halloween. There was not too much going on except a few random families with their children, the normal assortment of wayward hookers, and the usual suspects. After a 1/2 hour, I left my station and started the walk back to my hotel. Turning the corner on the street towards Delirium, I encountered a young looking white girl who grabbed my arm. Usually, I don't allow hookers to touch me before I know them but I was in a relaxed frame of mind and told her after a few seconds she was too young. I estimated she could have been 16 or 17 yo. Nevertheless, she persisted in wrapping her hand around my forearm. While I was thinking of how to divest her from my arm, several seconds later I encountered 5 mulatto women and one got down on her knees in front of me stimulating oral sex while the others circled me. Within seconds, they swarmed me on all sides, grabbing and poking me and trying repeatedly to unzip my pockets. I felt one woman with her hand on my phone while another tried to pick my wallet in my other pocket.

I spun around to escape both pushing them off me. I was so angry that I hit one women in the stomach who claimed it was not her but another chick who was attempting to steal my phone. Then she retaliated by hitting me a glancing blow with her pocketbook. This entire incident occurred all in the space of a minute in full view of other pedestrians as I was walking in middle of streets just steps from the porticos of the Clocktower. Finally when I yelled "ladrones", they backed off.

Cartagena for the chicas is not as safe because they do not live downtown. If the girl is from Cartagena, chances are she lives east of barrio Armenia. If she's not, then likely in the neighborhoods just east of Manga in El Bosque. During the day, El Bosque is actually pretty safe. At night, it gets sketch, but not terribly so. Under no circumstances should anyone reading this venture east of Armenia. There's nothing there, and you will get robbed. If your chica lived downtown (Centro, Getsemani, Manga, or Bocagrande / Castillogrande), she would have much the same experience as we all do.

My cutoff is Caribe Plaza, I don't go anywhere further, once I see too many 2 men on a motorcycle I'm going back to Centro jajaja.

The closest chica I have lives in El Bosque she's usually safe. But the ones that always get into trouble are coming from La Esperanza or San Fernando or way out there. I even have two coming from way up in Bayucna, so far no problems with them as they have personal drivers that drop them off and pick them up.

Maybe the thief's think that girls purse is full of money they earned as a prostitute. Besides unlike other places girls in Cartagena flash their fancy purse.

Then my last day there she said two guys on a bike they took her purse when she was waiting to cross the street.

Yet chicks in Latin America continue carrying purses.

I keep telling my chicas that I never see this crime when I'm there therefore it seems safe to me, but my little experience of 3 months spread out during the year cannot equal to their experience living there full time so I just have to take their word for it that Cartegena is not as safe as everyone thinks.

Same here, I stuck to Getsemani and barely went to Centro. To me, Getsemani had better restaurants anyway and was not as crowded.

Its bad and the crime is also in broad daylight too. During my recent 2 weeks I was in Cartegena one of my chicas was robbed 3 times. First she said she hopped off a moto taxi and when she turned around the taxi came back and snatched her bag, she said she had her phone in her bra so they didn't get that (her fault because I gave her money to take a car but she was trying to be cheap and took a moto instead). Second she said she was walking home and some guy approached her and told her give up her phone or they will mess up her face so she gave them the phone. So now she's using a borrowed phone. Then my last day there she said two guys on a bike they took her purse when she was waiting to cross the street.

Getsmani has good restaurants and tasty and cheap. I never felt scared and nobody robbed me and my girl when walking back to Marriott hotel through the gap in the wall middle of the night. We both felt like leisurely romantic walk.

I remember my Colombian girl in Costa Rica stuffing the money in her undies. When asked why she said there are many thieves there who snatch purse from women. Many a time they threaten the girl like what happened to your girl. Next time tell your girl to stuff the money in her undies. Thieves are after money and not into causing bodily harm.

Usually do and a lesson learned. Fortunately, I knew exactly their agenda and incurred no personal loss but made this report to let fellow compatriots know that the Clocktower is not as tranquil as it may appear. It's particularly daunting on the street in front of the plaza. There are a lot more mischief makers there then in years past. I think because police are trying to keep the plaza clear a lot of help that is as they just moved a bit.

I arrived Saturday afternoon and outside the airport, the streets were wet with some puddles so it must have rained right before my plane landed. However, there has been no appreciable rain since though it has been more cloudy than not. ...........................

I do not know as have not been in MDE in many years. I would think it's more dangerous over there, especially in terms of violent crime. InCartagena, it's more harassment, pickpocketing, stealing and scamming.

I think the city deacons made a mistake chasing them from the plaza. At least there, you know where they are. Used to be I would not see a soul after walking the first block towards Plaza Madrid. Now, it fells like running the gauntlet.
