Hi Tall Man,

I'm looking to head to the coastal area mid Dec (before Christmas) and hoping to find the best choice between (Carta, BQ or SM) for a combined hang at the beach + mongering maybe 2-3 nights out of 7.

I've mongered in the DR, Mexico (Cancun), Cuba, Costa Rica (Jaco), Saint Martin and Rio. To name just a few.

If you asked me to build my perfect vacation spot it would be hanging by day on hotel row in Cancun (beautiful beach & easy hotel access to turquoise waters) and by night, without too far a travel, areas that have zones for mongering. Like Saint Martin, Medellin and San Jose (Costa Rica) would provide.

Is there any mongering in Santa Marta or will I need to prepare ahead and line something up on PhotoPrepagos or any other site (recommendations welcome) and settle for pot luck?

From what I researched online, Santa Marta would be a good compromise for me as there are hotels on the beach so I can just walk out in the AM, have my eggs and coffee, chill at the beach with a good book and my music.

And then at night, hop in a taxi and find the mongering zone in Santa Marta. LOL.

Am I dreaming or do you think Santa Marta can answer my prayers?

BTW, my Spanish is minimal and prob can do okay with combo WhatsApp and Google Translate.

Ok. Beaches in Colombia are crowded and probably not what you are looking for if comparing to the Carribean. There is fun to be had in Santa Marta read the threads and take it from there. But as far as a relaxing beach. No.

Some know that I spend much time in Medellin, close to half of each year but always wanted to check the costena chicas out in the northern coast, so spent a week in both Cartagena and Santa Marta.

In CTG I stayed in the old town just a few blocks over from the clock tower and around the corner from the night clubs. Each night just observed and met chicas for hours each night at the Clock Tower. Just learning the grind of the mongering scene in Cartagena. One night I did settle in on a chica from Barranquilla, yes a real costena as many chicas are either Venezuelan or from other Colombian cities. As I recall I paid 150 mil and she was a sweet heart, only because I picked right and got lucky. Had a few hours with her back in my hotel room..

The limits are usually 600 k or 700 k twice a day. Always charge in COP and your bank at home should give you the best rate. The only time you should go to a money changer is you're bringing in tons of money to change that would go over these limits.

You can rent a lancha for 1. 5 million pesos or thereabouts. Certainly a lot less than 2 k to 3 k USD.

The best place to exchange was on Calle 8 across from the Hampton Inn in Bocagrande. Next to the convenience store.

I'll be in the CTG in Dec and want to go to Isla Rosario but not on a tour. What I am trying to do is get out there & once I am on the Island, find a local fisherman to bring me fishing on his boat. Everytime I text or whatsapp a local and say 'Water Taxi', they automatically tell me. 'No taxi, lancha o barco' and I know we are talking about the same thing but I can't find anything but day tours & snorkeling trips, etc. , etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

I believe lancha means speed boat or small boat, and barco means a yacht or a bigger boat. Google around there are websites with companies that offer boat rentals. Cartagena won't be cheap because its where all the tourists go. That boat makes money off tourism and not fishing usually.

Have you considered Santa Marta or Barranquilla? Probably much better luck there for a normal fishing trip.

EDIT: Oh wait you just want a ticket to Rosario Islands? There are tons of little stores that offer tickets for trips. You end up getting on the boat at the pier just before the old city. I think its less than 100k for a trip to a resort. Not sure what destination you have in mind.

EDIT 2: You know what? From Laguito get a speed boat for 20-30k to Isla Tierra Bomba and talk to the locals there. Lots of people live on that island and they fish.

Very good post. I monger sometimes in Cartagena, and it is the only place where I monger. Actually I am planning to quit doing it. I think it is nonsense to take a chica to your apartment if you have to be worry permanently about your belongings or life.
