This is a common method used to pick pockets. The grabbing, touching, bumping is a distraction to keep you from noticing the hand that's working your phone or wallet out of your pocket. The same thing happened to me before Christmas outside of Gtill Nueva. As I left a guy with a candy tray started bumping me with the tray, blocking me. Meanwhile, his hand, hidden by the tray was pushing my cellphone up from the bottom of my pocket. Luckily, I'm paranoid about my phone and constantly check it's firmly in my pocket. He got it almost halfway out before I pushed it back and realized what was happening.

I say "fortunately" because I don't carry an old phone. These days I'm not out and about as much and carry my lifeline.

I guess I was complacent. If a girl approaches and tries to touch me I block her hands, grabbing her wrists if necessary and tell her not to touch me. I wasn't properly suspicious of the candy vendor.

This is good your reporting this. One of my regular Colombian Chicas was walking up from the glass parkway by Veracruz Church to the Parque Berrio Metro Station and mid-way a man came up to her, brandished a knife and said hand over your back pack and a woman accomplice started to yank it off her back and my Chica fought back / struggled and in the end they got her bag and she got a bruised shoulder where the strap of the backpack was and a bruised foot from trying to fend them off for less than a minute. The incident happened this last Saturday at 2 PM but I didn't ask about the weather but my bet it was raining. And the pair of thieves where Venezuelans based on their accent from what I was told. Fortunately she only lost her bag, a used smart phone, 100,000 Pesos, a Bancolombia Debit Card, and photocopy of her ID.

You can never let your guard down here, and when you least expect it, shit can happen. Sometimes guys get very complacent here, and are totally naive and find themselves having a far worse experience here than what happened to you.

Calle 10 is a very long street that runs the length (or width depending on how you look at it) of Poblado pretty much. And there is Calle 10 and Calle 10 a that run parallel for a while and are both bustling at night and especially on weekends. I would go straight to Parque Lleras if I was going there to monger. Calle 10 is just too long. Easier to spot the SWs in and around the park.

I am a middle aged man closer to 60 than 50 so I can always spot the SWs because they are the only chicas checking me out. Otherwise they do often travel in packs. But so do other groups of girls and they really do not dress much differently either. I think one of the ways I spot them is that a normal group of friends is all involved in conversation with each other where as SWs are ofte alert to what's going on around them and being more alert to find a customer.

The advice I would give is stay out of Gusto unless you want to pay like 5 times what you would pay a chica in the park.
