Another option is to use the free airport wi-fi to order your Uber, then get a SIM when you get into town. I usually go to Exito Wow, pick a girl at the Virgin Mobil kiosk, give her my phone, tell her that I'm going to get groceries, and have it registered and working by the time I get back. I tried to use the public taxi while I was there. To and from the airport was good for me. There is a set price and I no one tried to scam me. I tried to use it twice in the city. The first time, the taxi guy put his meter on and had me pull up my destination on my phone and then spent 5 - 10 minutes looking at my phone and another 10 minutes asking me questions in Spanish (I had to use google translate since my Spanish was bad). 2/3's of the end meter price was racked up before the car even moved. The 2nd time, the taxi driver looked at my destination and we started to move very quickly. It was awesome. Until I looked on my maps app and realized we were going the opposite direction for the first half hour. I questioned him and he said we are avoiding traffic. I knew it was BS because we were going south on the freeway, then he just took a you turn and we were going north. For the rest of my first trip and my 2nd and 3rd trip, I used Uber.

It's kind of a pain to wait that extra few minutes for an Uber than to just public taxi, but since I don't look like a local and my Spanish is bad all the taxi cabs just try to take advantage of me. I think there is another app that works for public taxis but makes it so you don't get cheated too.

I don't care about paying extra to use a public cab (the difference is so little) or the more comfortable / cleaner seats on uber, but I do care about the time I wasted. I guess people who look like locals and / or can speak Spanish well will have a different experience.

I was mainly going to the casas, street walkers areas marked on the forum map.

I am speaking from the perspective of someone who may not have much experience here. I'm not sure about the price difference but I do know uber rarely exceeds and is often less than the equivalent taxi cost. Even if uber cost more than a taxi, it could be worthwhile for a new visitor because if you use uber:

- you don't need local currency or knowledge of one of the local taxi apps (coopebombas, didi, indriver etc.) to pay your bill.

- you don't have have to remember to use the meter, or try to figure out how the meter works, or worry about whether it started early or late.

- you don't have to figure out the route to your destination or even communicate it to the driver, uber does that for you.

- if you leave something behind in the car, have doubts about the route taken or the cost, uber will help you after the fact. Try that after your taxi drives off.

Which girls does anyone imagine will be less exposed to coronavirus than those in Centro? They all use the metro and taxis. They all come in contact with other people in day to day interactions. Most if not all live in barrios like Bello, Paris, Manrique etc. Where they live in close quarters and, I can tell you from first hand experience, people are not generally wearing face masks or washing their hands in clean running water frequently. It seems illogical to me that a Centro street girl is any more likely a virus vector than anybody else who is out among a throng of people in Centro. I buy 20 days of talk, data, and text for 20 mil. Amount of data is limited, but is enough for me because I use wifi where available. Many of the locals prefer other carriers. I could easily see a breakout happening there, and a potential shutdown of establishments, no different than in Minorista. And probably what would precipitate this is a Love Hotel or Restaurant or Bar worker getting infected, as that would be a case that would end up being reported if someone was tested, versus the walkers who might just have flu like symptoms and would work anyways telling somebody they just had the Gripe or a cold not really knowing what they might have and could expose to others.

I saw the quarantine has been extened to May 11th so my May 8th flight to MDE on Copa will be cancelled. I am curious if once the borders are opened to air travel, will the Colombian Gov make tourists quarantine after arrival?

So what we saw was a super contagious form of the flu. The main thing was not to overwhelm the health care systems. Like the USA, Colombia has flattened the curve.

The problem with this is when you scare the shit out of people, you have to unscare them, and that seems to take longer. I think we should open everything up now, but I would be shocked now if we do not see flights into Colombia in early June or late May. These are two good studies from the most populous states in the country, and the results were nearly identical.
