Just back from a week long visit to Medellin.

You appear to have some genuine information, unlike many on this thread. I also admire your tenacity if, indeed, you really live in El Centro and not in your mother's basement in Lawton, Oklahoma.

El Centro is extremely dangerous. I have been robbed six times in the last five years. And have witnessed countless others being robbed, beaten and stabbed. Two homicides within 10 meters but I missed that hand grenade in July by three hours (which BTW was the result of a drug turf war).

I have never been harmed because I have never resisted. Also, the Paisas have respect for senior citizens. I let them have my $5 watch and the 20 k and vitamin V in my pocket. One time they were so polite they returned my pack of cigarettes. My worst experience was they took my room key which the hotel charged me 50 k for replacement.

My advice to the uninitiated: Stay out of El Centro. If you must go, do not go West of Carrera 52 or North of Calle 53. Leave the area before sunset and by no means be intoxicated as you are their number one target of opportunity. And do not be lulled by the recent show of police force in the area. They are only window dressing and will be of litlle or no help while you are being stabbed and robbed.

Wow. 6 x in 5 years? That is quite a lot. It sounds like you live there. If so, wouldn't you get the hint to move out to maybe Laureles or some other safer neighborhood? I have been to El Centro quite often the past 4 years. Haven't been robbed yet. Witnessed a guy being chased with a machete and maybe a couple of pickpockets, but that's about it. Keep your eyes open and don't look down!

Just a quick note, was at the Mansion for Halloween and had a great time. Lots of familiar faces and the vibe was just really good. The party Saturday night was a awesome -- it was all you could drink and the ratio of guys to girls was easily 2 to 1 (likely closer to 3). With respect to the bar downstairs (now called Charlie's Angels) I would strongly suggest that guests be aware of the price they are being charged for drinks. I would also suggest not running a tab as you will likely not remember all the things you did (and did not) order. I've had multiple conversations with guys who were left scratching their heads at their bar bill.

Finally, the support staff at the Mansion do a great job going above and beyond the call of duty. Keep up the good work!

You are not going to walk the Darien Gap to Panama, so will not need a guide if you are only to go the Mayo. It is a 10 minute walk from the Metro on a well lite street, just ask someone which way to walk, or head west, when you get off the Metro or take a cab from the Metro station or El Gringolandia.
