Well maybe in the year 2050. Def disagree with this thought. Tourists are the exception, not the norm in MDE. Most places have to sell their servcies and products to the local market, so these prices will cut it in the general market.

I agree with you with the exception of the front desk not knowing. It is the basically the same people at the desk for years. They know the amenities of each room from the pc they have to book rooms. Also, after hundreds of visitors they would know which are the quiet rooms. The rooms can be found in Arbnb and it will describe whether it has sound proof windows or not. If you are unsure book a single night at least that way you don't wind up losing a lot more.

They are all owned by different owners, so they all have different levels of finish and furnishings.

You can pay online with credit card on airbnb or booking.com or pay in cash at the reception. You get a little discount when you pay in cash.

There are people who book a couple of months at a time. Last December when I was there, I was talking to a guy there, who is from the new England area, he said he stays there from November to February every year.

Suggestion. Have a a map open on your phone, and look at the scale and then check out places as they are mentioned in reports. You will see that it is a big city. The places that are talked about are many many miles apart. To the Mayorista area from centro might take you 40 minutes in a cab. Depending on traffic it could be more.

4 years ago I'm pretty sure I could have walked from El Centro to Motel Ibiza in under 3 hours, but there's no point. No chica is going to walk that far. Besides, it's less than a 5 minute walk from the Ayura metro station.

I suppose if you considered Mayorista as ground zero, it would be walkable, but any girls aren't walking that far.

I paid 150 mil (about US $50 at the time) a night about 2 years ago and had a quiet room. I remember I have to pay all in cash to the security plus some deposit. Now I am wondering if the $30 room is going to have noise problem.

I'll defiantly just take a taxi but I have never been there so I was just wondering if it was walking distance. I'd way rather use my energy for more fun things than hiking to a motel!

I was just there a couple of weeks ago. Had one of the rooms that was without sound proof windows for around $37 dollars. I wound up leaving for a hotel. It was that bad. I had been going there for years and trusted the receptionist that the room was ok. I had a room before that had sound proof windows but only had it for a week. Needed to move and took their suggestion because the room ended with 3 on one of the higher floors. Lesson learned. Many were complaining and I know of one client that wanted a refund but they refused to give one. Your welcome to pm me for any other details

I do everything alone. I made the mistake of talking with those gringos when I stayed at Botero Boulevard for 3 weeks. There are about 9 of them. 2 stay in Botero Boulevard. 4 stay in Premier Plaza. 3 stay elsewhere. Most have been here 7-8 months. Some are on a pension or Social Security. One I was told lives off mommy dearest. Many of the others are living here off their unemployment benefits.

Hate those guys with a passion. The main reason I quit talking to them is that they would talk for hours about nothing. Most have never been anywhere else in Colombia because they have little money so nothing to learn from them. Bunch of Chesters. One wanted me to walk with him and he would approach young looking girls. If a cop were to approach him and ask him why he was talking to the young girl, I know what he would do. He would point to me 50 feet away (because I had no interest) and tell the police that he was talking to the girl for me because I do not know Spanish. So many stories.

The best way to go as you have surmised is totally under the radar in Centro. I talked with one of the guy's you mentioned and one of his Chicas came up to him and asked him if I was a gringo as I pass as a Colombian from what I've been told. And the next day when I was in Centro she comes up to me asking me to go with her. There are a lot of girls in Centro that I will call "gringo hunters" who specifically look for gringos as they typically are paying way more than the locals.

I totally agree that these guys are a bunch losers, but they would probably say the same about me. And these same guys you mentioned are also doing young girls as well. I was talking with one of them one day, and a young girl started to come up to us and I immediately split.

I don't want any attention when I'm in Centro. I'm fortunate that nobody gives me a second look when I'm lurking around, and don't want to be marked or associated with any of these guys just like you.

For most gringos in Centro, they are obvious foreigners which can draw a lot of attention, and any attention in Centro and in the entire Country for that matter, is not a good thing.

As a reference, and on the extreme end of being a foreigner in a foreign land, when I was in India walking around in various parts of New Delhi it was like people where watching my every move, looking at me with this look in their eyes as to what the hell are you doing here.

My point is, that the last thing anybody needs, especially in Centro, is any added attention.

Sorry, I can't help. I didn't think about mongering when I was there. I basically went to scuba dive and do the excursions and experience the island. My GF at the time was working so I went solo. We don't have a beach here in Medellin so sometimes I take off to the coast for some beach time.
