However, if we want to stick with the "large, white, dark haired, tan gringos are easily mistaken for Colombians" story, I have a question or two. I fit that description and I don't believe anyone ever thought I was Colombian. There was 1 Dutch backpacker who tried to ask me directions in very poor Spanish. He admitted he didn't think I was Colombian, but he wasn't sure.

Question 1: How does a large gringo (part of the original description) pass for Colombian? Even at my skinniest, I'm still 40# heavier and 6" taller than practically everyone in Colombia. I've also never seen a Colombian in my age range who even vaguely resembles me..

I can pass as a Colombian and have been told so by other Colombians as long as my mouth is shut. When I am in El Centro I dress like a local, tattered blue jeans and worn out T-shirt. I don't wear sun glasses or carry a bottle of water around with me, and whether I am in an Estrato 1 or 6 I fly under the radar with my mouth shut. So I consider myself less of a target than an obvious gringo but not immune.

In regards to Colombians paying attention to a person's Estrato, this is very true but not in the sense your suggesting. What I call "Classism" exists in Colombia, I have witnessed it first hand on many occasions. Two examples include once when I was with one of my Amigas in Provenza, she was asked by a Colombian couple we meet which part of town she was from and when she told them (Paris) they immediately gave her the cold shoulder as that is an Estrato 1/2 part of town compared to where this couple lived. Another example includes when I was looking at a property in Poblado and the real estate agent had brought along an attorney. When I asked the attorney about Bellen across the river and west of Poblado he made a remark about those people who live in that part of town. In both of these occasions I was with other friends who witnessed and heard what I had heard and later remarked on it. It's identical to racism, but based on class, and with Colombia having a system whereby the wealthy subsidize the poor, perhaps that's why it exists. As an example, when you go to get cable service say in CLARO, they will have a chart of fees based on Estrato. There is also a sliding scale for heath care and utilities.

I know none of this matters for most, but the point is, Colombians wouldn't even be thinking about what a gringo's Estrato is.

It ambiguously means whatever you want it to mean. The upfront and straight forward way of dealing with the situation would have been to say that her 200 k would be deducted for her taxi to and from your place, which you purposely avoided saying.

Question 2: Assuming we've got the whole country baffled about our nationality, what estrato do all these confused Colombians put us in? Whether we're walking around Parque Lleras or Parque de LOS Periodistas, they've got to be thinking we're at least estrato 4 or better. Not many of us can pass for estrato 1 or 2. And 1 thing Colombians do pay attention is a person's estrato.

So, with all these poly-sci university students, who take up street crime between classes, roaming around, choosing the best targets, are they going to pass up a middle-aged, wealthy (easily confused for) Colombian, who's clearly not from the neighborhood in hopes of finding a cargo shorts wearing, blonde hair, blue eyed gringo?

I have bribed the airport authorities in Kenya; I didn't have the required yellow fever shots, they wouldn't let me in the country. I also bribed cops once or twice in Russia and Eastern Europe. Those situations are all out of desperation, I didn't enjoy them at all. I always start the bribe with 40 dollars and see where it goes. I will be extra careful with what I carry in Medellin. One of my friend actually had his iPhone XS stolen in gusto. My phone is heavily insured and I have a backup iPhone with an extra sim. The reason I carry my iPhone is for iCloud syncing consistency (I take lots of photos and videos when I'm out partying) and for high quality pictures. I'm surprised I don't see much reports on parque Lleras in comparison as the reports I have seen on fb girls and el centro. Is it my imagination an area of bars and clubs has to be loaded with non pros and pros I understand they charging a bit more in those areas but there has to be some treasures.
