I arrive tomorrow in Medellin for my summer Spanish course. There are at least 8 Spanish schools in the Medellin / Laureles area: Toucan Spanish, Immersion Spanish, EAFIT etc. EAFIT offers the full university experience with library, gym, cafeteria and parks. EAFIT also offers the opportunity to apply for a yearly student visa. Immersion offers the Colombian culture with field trips. Some are just class rooms in building with private and group classes. I've seen them as low as 8 usd an hour. Dance free has salsa classes for free with the hope that the free classes will lead to packages being sold. On average most classes are 38-40 hours a month usually for 2 hours every weekday. For a month of classes it can cost between 400-600 usd depending on your schedule.

There are yoga classes, cooking classes, dance classes available very easy. Also day trips to cities within two hours of Medellin are prevalent.

I too hate 3rd party / middlemen, a few weeks back when I was in Cucuta I saw an ad for out call to hotels, it got my interest but I knew already where this would end up, I contacted the 3rd party and he sent me literally 60 photos of "his girls" in Cucuta whom were available, the price? 325 mil for a few hours, what the hell! Speed (for some). Less clarity. More slang. Some words I have picked up and used (innocently) to my ex-wife and daughter (from Bogota) have resulted in very ugly looks and a "I would never say that" reply. The middle-class and upper-class are easy to understand in Medellin. But not the Castellano / Spanish spoken by the people from the poor barrios. It's like two different languages. I had a "monitor" at La Liga de tenis at the big Stadium in Estadio, a student. I could not understand what he said, he was from Santo Domingo, a very poor barrio,(also knew for it's futuristic library, Bibiotecta Espaola, inaugurated by King Juan Carlos himself). After tennis-classes I went to La UPB for Spanish-classes and one day I told my teacher that I did not understand my tennis-trainer. "Nor, do I, he replied".

Many prepagos are from those poor barrios while your Paisa-friends are more likely to be from the well-off barrios like Laureles, Poblado etc.

It's a 45 minute trip from the airport to Medellin. Add in going through customs and security and you'll probably only have an hour to spend in Medellin.

Question: Which part of Colombia is great for mongering whilst being in close proximity to a beach?

Wouldn't it be more productive to first look at a map of Colombia, take note of which cities are located near a beach, then ask your questions in a forum for one of those cities?

Medellin is great for mongering, but it's a long walk to the beach.
