When I travel I use my Charles Schwab debit card. Reason 1: it refunds me for additional POS fees. I do not know how they can do it without losing money, but they do it. Reason 2: I do not want to have my main account debit card with me, in case of issue they can potentially take a lot of my money. On Charles Schwab, instead, I keep at max 2-3 thousands USD. Charles Schwab sends me a text with the USD amount in real time, and the exchange rate is always very close to the google online exchange value. The difference is negligible.

Finally, I also uninstall my home banking apps from my phone except for the Charles Schawab one. Why? Well, 2 reasons: (1) If a criminal take me in his custody, he could force me to login my smartphone. If your phone has face recognition, this is extremely easy and you might be even unaware of it (a little bit of benzodiazepine from a girl and you sleep deeply while she scans your face). In these situations, it is better the criminal doesn't know how much money you have and where you keep it. (2) If they have you in custody, and have access to your smartphone, then they have access to the Multi Factor Authentication (txt messages or authentication apps) as well. Just wanted to mention Schwab has a debit card deal where they will refund all of your ATM fees. I use this card exclusively for travel and transfer funds into it only when I need it to withdrawal cash.
