I would not advise to go, if you never went before to one in your country. Otherwise, you add the novelty of the place (do you know how to behave?) to the novelty of the country (is Colombia the same as your country?) and you increase the probability to feel like a fish in a sand desert.

I have been in just 3 clubs in Medellin (those mentioned in ISG), but the girl I met last Monday told me there are at least four more, and according to her opinion the best is not one of the three I know. She gave me some names and I cannot wait to explore, next time I will be there.

US carriers rip you off even more by charging for outgoing and incoming calls.

Get a unlocked GSM phone. Buy a local sim card (Tigo, Claro, Moviestar) and put 5000 COP (less than $2) for each day of your stay. You will have enough voice and data for 1/10th the cost.

I've been to Colombia twice and had no problem using my AT&T phone. However, my company has my phone set up for international roaming and AT&T charges $10/ day when you use it. If my company wasn't paying for this anyway, I'd buy a local SIM and use that.

2) WHY DO YOU NEED IT? Please be aware of roaming charges.

What I do is the following (others will advise differently, especially those who have a plan including roaming for a small fee):

1) I keep my phone with its European SIM card. I do not answer calls, but I call back using WeChatOut (I am always online via wifi, see below) instead of SkypeOut, which I find cumbersome.

2) I have a local SIM card of Movistar, which never expires apparently. I put it in a cheap GSM phone and I just top it up 20k COP for a week of local calls.
Why the cheap phone? For when I go to places where I don't want to have expensive items with me..
