Using an ATM (cajero) is by far the best option. You will get the Visa Exchange Rate that was set the prior night at midnight EST. (Except Saturday, Sunday and Monday) are all based on the Friday exchange transactions.

Just a minor correction. The rate is set at midnight GMT, which is 7 pm in Medellin. All other information you presented is spot on IMO. I don't understand how Surfer does transactions with no fee with a Bank of America card. They state that there is a $2.50 fee for all out-of-network ATM transactions, with no waivers.

This week started out with mediocrity, and ended with an exceptional find. Goes to show that this is ultimately a numbers game, and if you keep playing you will find what you want.

The real question is how deep the Colombian banks will get into your pockets, and I have never been charged a "hidden fee" or a "foreign transaction fee" with either of my Bank of America or Wells Fargo debit ATM cards in Colombia, and the best exchange rate I have ever gotten is from Scotia / Colpatria bank.

As far as the three percent which your reference, this is typically associated with USA credit cards, and unless you have a credit card that specifically waves that fee, which there are several of, you will be charged the 3%.

I have never heard of "hidden fees" associated with a debit ATM card from the USA.

As far as the banks digging deep into your pockets, well Bancolombia is very good at this, as their ATM exchange rate is always below Scotia's, and if you have an account with them here in Colombia, they are even worse than WF or Bank of America in the USA with the fees they charge their customers.

At the end of the day, it's the exchange rate the Colombian bank gives you as you have pointed out, along with what they charge as a fixed fee in Pesos to make the transaction..

I don't want to argue with you but this is important for a lot of people visiting or living here. How do I get money and which method gives me the best deal?

There are transfer sites like Western Union, Remitly, Zoom, WorldRemit and dozens of others. They all charge you either an up front fee to convert and send the money. Some will advertise that they have the lowest fee (which is true) but then they scalp you on the exchange rate. All in all you will lose 3 to 5% on your transaction.

Money exchange places. There are usually a few in the nearest mall or the airport. They don't tell you too much other than this is the exchange rate for US dollars. You will compare two or three and take the one with the best rate but again you'll be losing something on the order of 3-10%.

Using an ATM (cajero) is by far the best option. You will get the Visa Exchange Rate that was set the prior night at midnight EST. (Except Saturday, Sunday and Monday) are all based on the Friday exchange transactions.

Here are the important things to know:

Bancolombia will charge you a fee to withdraw funds. I think they only allow 600 mil as a withdrawal and they charge 16 mil for each withdrawal. This is way too expensive.

Servibanca also charges a fee.

Bank of Bogota charges a fee.

BBVA doesn't charge a fee but you can only take out 300 mil at a time (but you can do multiple transactions).

Davienda doesn't charge a fee and most of their machines allow a 2,000 mil (2 million) withdrawal.

Colpatria doesn't charge a fee and you can take 900 mil at a time (you can do multiple transactions).

Banco Pichincha doesn't charge a fee and you can take 800 mil at a time.

All these banks give you the Visa Exchange Rate. So there is NO better rate available at any of these banks on any given day. You can verify that for yourself, if you don't believe me.

Important: If in the process of withdrawing money you are offered the "guaranteed rate or bank coversion rate" or whatever they call it. You decline it!! Otherwise they give you a lesser exchange rate. If you decline it, you get the Visa Exchange Rate (which is what you want) and the Visa rate is always better.

Now with respect to what your US bank charges you to do the transaction. I can't say. Wells Fargo would charge you a fee to take their ATM card out of your wallet if they could.

Many US banks will charge you a transaction fee or foreign exchange fee or something similar. Surfer500 says his two banks don't charge it. I can only assume that he has a special status or longevity with his banks. Most banks will charge you something, it's what they do.

Schwab is great because they don't charge you on their end. As an inducement to get their card (and hopefull have some of your investments with them) they reimburse you any ATM fees the Colombian bank charges. So as an example, if you go to Bancolombia and withdraw money and get charged 16 mil for the transaction. Schwab will reimburse you the equivalent (in US dollars) of that ATM fee. A friend of mine says he has a Fidelity account and they do the same thing. No fees on their end but they will reimburse any ATM fees from the foreign bank.

Trip length a little over three months, arrived in Medellin on Dec 24th 2021, and landed back on US soil on April 1, 2022.

I screwed up by not understanding the tourist visa correctly and had to take a last minute side trip to Panama shortly after arriving in MDE. The tourist visa does not automatically reset at the beginning of the calendar year, as I believed. Therefore I had to leave and come back in 2022 before the 8 or 9 days left on my 2021 "visa" ran out. Please understand there is no "visa" in the proper since when you visit Colombia as a tourist. Immigration is simply going by your passport stamp to determine your number of days (90 days + 90 day renewal max allowed per calendar year) for tourism. When you "upgrade" or change to a true visa of which there are many different types, then you get an actual separate paper visa. Clear as mud? The word "visa" is used by convention for tourists.

Panama was cool but too much like the USA. I wouldn't make it a destination point for mongering but if you happen to be connecting there, consider making it a layover for a couple of nights. I couldn't wait to get back to Medellin.

This is my third year of spending half my time in Medellin. My long term goals are dual citizenship and to live in Medellin more than in the USA.

Accomplished one goal this trip of getting a total dental rehab including one wisdom tooth pulled and all my old mercury fillings drilled out and replaced with modern white amalgam. If you're going to do it as a group:

You are exactly correct. The Visa Exchange rate is set based on the monetary exchange transactions at the end of the day. The reset is at midnight. So, on Monday at 12:00 AM there were no transactions on Sunday so the rate continues through Monday and gets reset at 12:00 AM Tuesday based on Monday's exchange rate transactions.

Schwab doesn't charge a foreign transaction fee and they give you the day's Visa Exchange rate. They make their money by you having an investment account linked to your bank account with them. The expectation is that eventually (or maybe immediately) you will use their investment account and they will earn some commissions that way.

Thanks for your posts. While I have been to the mansion twice, it has been over a decade since my last visit. Can you give me an idea about pricing for the young ladies? Short time and overnight.

this is my official position on Schwab vs any other option: Schwab is the best, there is no other viable solution.

Having both Schwab and E-Trade is optimal. Schwab charges 3% if you purchase with their debit card and E-Trade only 1%. Both refund all ATM / cash machine / cajero fees but E-Trade charges a 1% fee on foreign withdrawals. So, for the dedicated traveler, Schwab for pulling cash and E-Trade for using the debit card for the rare situation where credit cards aren't feasible.

I tried travelling to Med. In Feb. And was denied by Spirit here in the states. I hear that once you get there that they (immigration) don't even ask, However on the Gov. Website I'm pretty sure they still require tourists to have if not the full Vax (3 shots) then you must have at least 1 shot AND a negative test 72 hours prior before boarding. Absolutely ridiculous!

I hated missing out on some Paisa action but I instead ended up going to Cancun. Plenty of Colombianas there on Seeking.

My issue now is trying to find a decent flight into Med from Myrtle Beach. Spirit no longer accommodates and US Air is 3 x the cost that I used to pay at nearly a grand!

I hope Spirit will start up again flying from here to there again soon!
