Last year I made a really good friend when my buddy got married down there. She is out going and not shy, good friend and kinda don't like she lost her job and it has been hard. She confessed to me she was going to go look into working in Fase, with that I told her if she really needed some help I would try to send some good people down her way. She knows I'm not a saint and have been to fase and similar places. She's not a pro but she's not a saint to haha. Fun girl and wish I could go down to Medellin myself now.

Just back from my first nine day trip to Medellin. I stayed at Ibis Medellin around 38 USD per night. Taxi in Medellin are very cheap.

Day time action.

During day time I hit Centro casa. I use the casa map that can be found on the board. I try using google map to go the casa but not successful so decide to give exact address to taxi driver and they always found the right address. I paid on average 40000 COP for half hour and give 20000 COP for BBBJ if girl agrees. Half of the girls want to give only covered BJ therefore no tip.

Night time.

First couple of night I went to mayorista and paid around 60,000 for girl including BBBJ and 20000 for the room. After two night, I went to Fase 11 and the cost I paid 10000 cover, 16000 beer, 180000 for girl and room and 30000 BBBJ tip. I also went to Luna Lunera (Calle 33 # 63 be-215) strip club, no cover. And paid 140000 (room included) + 20000 BBBJ. I also went to two centro strip club, the difference in centro strip club is that you negotiate the price with the girl.

Within minutes of each other I exchanged dollars at a cambio in Mall Oviedo (which in the past has always delivered one of the better exchange rates I have see around town) and then pulled significant cash out of a nearby bank ATM using my USA bank debit card (mastercharge endorsed).

It always takes a few days for all the fees / charges to fully appear on my bank statement. (mastercard currency conv. Fee + mastercard cross border fee).

When all is said and done (with all fees included) I received the following exchange rate on this date:

Oviedo Mall Cambio: 2,190 cop / usd.

ATM withdrawl (debit card) 2,344 cop / usd.

Keep in mind this is a debit card and not a credit card.

I have done this little experiment in the past and I believe when all ATM fees were included the rates were much more equal or maybe even a little better at the cambios, but things have obviously changed leaning to better rates at the ATM. ----If one exchanges $1,000 usd this will amount to a difference of roughly 150,000 cop. A guy can have a lot of fun in Medellin with 150,000 cop. :-)

I will be traveling to Thailand next month and would be curious is the same will be found there?

ASIDE- on a recent past trip I noted that my debit card (which has no chip) would not work in many ATMs around Medellin. Almost all required a "chip". The ATMs on the wall as you enter west end of Mall Oviedo (nearest the cambios) do process cards without chip. Also the ATM at RIO casino in San Diego does as well. In centro I had real difficulty getting cash without a chip.

In January 2015 very little difference between travel cheques and US $ cash with rates. 50's and 100's best rates on cash. I never carry TC's in south america but carry them in thailand along with cash and debit cards. A good backup if ATM's down or they run out of money on a weekend.

The above experiment on exchange rates was done in Jan /2015. The below repeat experiment on rates is April 2015 just three months latter:

Friday the cambio gave 2410 pesos / dollar while the ATM debit card gave 2505. Saturday the cambio was 2395 and ATM 2465. This was quite a drop in one day, but I have noted in the past that weekends usually are the worst time to get a good exchange rate anywhere in the world. If I were going to make a generalization I would say wait until midweek to exchange large amounts of dollars.

This strong dollar is truly making things a whole lot cheaper here as long as you stay clear of the gringo business entities that quote their prices in dollars. I cannot blame them as they are just trying to make a living, but the locals are still very much peso based. Peso prices have gone up a little bit in general, but no where's near matching the dollar's valuation.

I will not be surprised if it turns out to be anticlimactic. You have time so I am glad you are exploring but most quality (8 and above) Bello girls do not want to hang out in Bello working as pros. Non pro action is a different story. You need your A game and good Spanish to pull that off.
