But many countries have it based on where you live, that is residency. Which can be different than nationality for sure. When I left Bogota this was the case. Unless you could prove residency in the destination countries you were not allowed to get on the plane. And as I read the EU restrictions it says that it is based on where you live. Ie. Residency. In the case of Costa Rica it is not yet clear as there are statements making it sound both ways. I expect they will clarify this in their own good time.

I know this is a moot point now, but I want to put forward some of my logical reasoning. It seems like we all agree that banning nationality is not practical; now, the next concern is to restrict residency. Here is a hypothetical to consider, I am a German citizen who lived in China or America during the entire time of COVID, and I took a humanitarian flight back to Germany using my German passport. I immediately try to board a flight to Costa Rica on the same day I arrived in Germany. Is the immigration officer at the German airport or in Costa Rica going to ask a German citizen to show proof of residency in Germany? Don't you think it is ironic? To complicate the matter further, many people have duo citizenship; they hold a passport in one of the E. You. Countries and the USA. Is Costa Rica's custom going to start an FBI like investigation on every tourist to trace down their whereabouts in the last three months?

Let's get back to Medellin; after all, the people here could care less about Costa Rica, we all want to get back to heaven, a. K. a Medellin. I think Colombia must open its border in September. Here is my reasoning:

Colombia has been implementing one of the strictest border restrictions in the world, certainly the most rigorous in South America. President Duque has covered his ass already. No one can blame him for not trying to put Colombian life first. He has every reason to come out and say, "Hey guys, I have tried the hardest in the world to protect our country, but we can't afford to let our economy deteriorate any further. We need to resume foreign investment and tourism."

On the other hand, if he chooses to extend the border closure beyond September 1st, he will be setting a precedent of COVID induced border closure. Political, it is hard to justify and risky, especially if Sweden or Brazil achieve herd immunity or countries like Costa Rica that have open their borders manage to keep their COVID case under control. I think the question is how will Colombia reopen in September, which country will be in the first wave and how can we get into those countries for the USA.

First, thanks for taking the time to respond to a newbie.

I agree with you and I am not booking anything yet, it's still a wait and see kinda situation.

In my opinion, November might be overly optimistic. I hope to be wrong.

When I say I'm on a budget, I mean it relative to some posters I have read about. My budget for my 4 week trip is right around 14,000,000 COP for everything except flights and accommodations. This includes chicas, food, drink, tours, sights and maybe a little dancing with some non pro's to see if I have any game left.

If you're on a budget, I'd do 2 things. First try to find ways to cut current spending and put more aside for your trip. Then I would push the trip back to a point where your budget will be less strained. You can also play around with your travel dates. Sometimes it's cheaper to stay a day longer, or to fly the next day.

From my RTFF and for my tastes, Poblado is not for me, might visit the area but it doesn't seem like the spot I want to stay. I have found a great Airbnb in Laureles on Circular 4 between Car 71 and 70,14th floor, 24 HR portero with call up service for visitors, 1 king bed, 1 bath but no Jacuzzi which is the only thing that would be nice but that is based of of Slapshots reports (loved all the Jacuzzi pics). Also thinking of getting a place in El Centro but more on that later.

There are plenty of ways to cut your costs while in Medellin. Some of them depend on your comfort zone and mongering style. Some, almost anyone can use.

1. Don't stay in Poblado. You can find suitable places for much less. Laureles is popular. You can also find places in Envigado and Sabaneta that will save you money. If you're comfortable in a very urban setting, you can save a lot by staying in El Centro. It's not for everyone, but there are some nice places for 300 k per week.

I am planning on using the metro for daytime travel and taxi, uber, didi, cabify, etc for night time travels.

2. Use public transportation. If you're hitting the casas in El Centro, you can save 20 k per day or more by using the Metro or the buses. Sometimes, especially at night, a taxi or Uber is necessary, but for daytime excursions I almost always use buses or Metro.

I have read about the menu del DIA and plan to go that route unless I'm craving something specific. I am also a great cook (tooting own horn) and plan to prepare some meals at my place but a monger on the go has to refuel when and where he can!

3. Menu del DIA. You can go to a nice restaurant and spend 20-50 k on a meal, or you can go to a basic Colombian restaurant and order the menu of the day. Cost is from 8-15 k, depending on where you're at. Meal usually includes your choice of meat, soup or beans, a small salad with avocado, rice, potatoes and or yuca, a fried plantain and drink. You can find breakfast for 5-12 k at similar restaurants. If you're not comfortable walking around the neighborhoods looking for restaurants, try a mall. The food courts have lots of options. Mitos is very good. Macondos is pretty good and a bit cheaper.

The casa or strip club scene, from what I have read is definitely in my wheelhouse and I have in my budget a casa trip per day, along with a Centro girl and probably a FB girl in the evening, depending on my desires of course.

4. Visit some casas. About 50 k gets you 30 minutes. If you do a casa during the day, it'll free up some money for having a girl come over at night.

5. If you're renting a full apartment with kitchen, buy some basic groceries to eat at least once a day in the apartment. Fruits, vegetables, milk, rice, eggs and chicken are all inexpensive.

Kudos to you for researching finding and then getting what you want. Cost of living is lower in Belen than other parts more frequented by mongers. One of the interesting things I observed on my 2nd trip to Medellin this year before the lockdown is the variation in price points across the city. A restaurant meal of similar quality and quantity can be easily 3 x in price. 5-10 k to 30 k or more. Most gringos hit up Poblado Laureles or Centro and say they saw Medellin. Yeah some areas are dangerous but many more are just ordinary middle class suburban neighborhoods.

Do you speak Spanish? For me that has been my biggest barrier and something I continue to work on. Hard to develop good relations getting just the hit and run sessions without it.
