It is funny how this works. The city I bought these purses in was small, and there was not too much traffic between the USA and Mexico. Border patrol seemed to know that without much foot traffic, their hours / jobs were in jeopardy.

This is in marked contrast to the heavier border crossings in Juarez / El Paso and San Diego / Tijuana. The attitudes there were much different and much more strict. Come to think of it, I did not see many counterfeit goods in Juarez or Tijuana. When I say there were fake purses, I mean all the big stores had them, and the stores had thousands if not tens of thousands of them. They were illegal DVDs being sold but they were usually just sold by street vendors. It is amazing then how the law is so variably enforced.

I tell them that I know their time is very valuable (which it really is not, if you consider the Colombian minimum wage) and wonder how much they require for their time. It's actually illegal, I recall seeing an episode on Border Security, a woman tried to bring in suitcases of counterfeit goods, the border agent allowed her to keep 1, but confiscated the rest.

OK, I stand corrected about how to keep Global Entry. I'm pleased to have it for 15 years now, even if its through dumb luck only.

You are allowed counterfeit items as a personal novelty, but you are not allowed to bring in like 10 of the same thing. If you are in violation of any Customs regulations then they will let you know on the spot or through the postal service and usually with a fine attached and/or making you pay duty for the items you have in excess. They will not just keep it secret and say you fucked up but we are not going to tell you how.
