I saw a couple of videos. People in the crowd were absolutely yelling at him to jump. I don't understand that mentality.

According to that article, he was Lithuanian.

Some of us who live here see it differently. In any case, you have to trust your instincts. Also on a more practical level it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to spend money to come to a place that makes you uneasy and afraid of your own shadow. This story has made the rounds of the major American and European media outlets for the past couple of years. I know this because people up north and in Europe who know I live here send me links like the one in your post on a regular basis. Whenever I am traveling and I mention to someone that I live in Colombia, more often than not they ask me "is it safe?" My stock response is "it's a city of two million plus people so crime is a problem and you have to take precautions. " The real answer is of course that yes it is safe for some and no it is not safe for some others.

So this piece of news finally hit mainstream media after making the turns on lesser known media.

Some people here will keep their head in the sand and pretend this only happens to "stupid, careless" people but truth is Medellin has gotten more dangerous recently. A shame because I loved my trip there but this will definitely make me think twice before rebooking.

So this piece of news finally hit mainstream media after making the turns on lesser known media.

Some people here will keep their head in the sand and pretend this only happens to "stupid, careless" people but truth is Medellin has gotten more dangerous recently. A shame because I loved my trip there but this will definitely make me think twice before rebooking.

The article says 'un lituano' so Lithuania. That did not look like a Spanish surname to me. Tomas / Tomasz is all over Eastern Europe and if Spanish, has an accent mark.

Yeah I read that on GringoPaisa (a Facebook group) I listened to the video and didn't hear anything remotely like what was said on that page. I heard lots of gasps and screams but not anyone urging him to jump. I have some friends on the staff there and I understand he was Lithuanian and was there on vacation and was depressed. Sad thing no matter what the details are.

I came in on Thursday morning from Guyana.

Was using my Canadian passport.

90% of the passengers were foreigners.

Went to the officer and was sent to another one.

Gave him my passport showed me a small paper that said Canadians have to pay 260 mil pesos or 85 Canadian dollars.

Only debit or credit cards are accepted.

I did not take any of my cards with me.

Reason my last trip in October I sent myself pesos from Guyana with WU.

So I had a lot that was left back.

So I had to sit on the chair behind him.

Then an officer came to me and said one of her colleague will use his card.

I gave 300 mil pesos for good deed.

This was implemented in November.

So I just had to share it fir fellow Canadians.

They had it a few years ago for a while, then dropped it around 2020 sometime I think. I had to pay it 2 or 3 different trips. Anyway, not original with Petro, although he has now re-instated it.

As of November 14,2023, you must pay an entry fee equivalent to $85 CAD in Colombian Pesos upon arrival in Colombia. You can only pay by credit card. The payment must be made upon entering the country during the immigration control process. There could be significant delays to make the payment, which could disrupt your travel plans.

You have a valid Colombian visa.

I always carry a knife with a 2 inch blade; not for protection, but for convenience when I need it for normal knife usage. I asked a local man about the laws and he said Colombia citizens are allowed to carry knives, and it would depend on the police officer if a foreigner had one. He said he didn't think there were any laws against it. In 13 years and many trips, I have never had an encounter with the police.

I was walking through the North Stroll in SF and all of a sudden there was a cop reaching into my jacket pocket from behind and he took my jack knife-- that was it-- no other interaction.

Once late at night a cop asked me to empty my pockets on Calle 19 and kept one of my lighters-- LOL-- he did ask to keep it.

Another time I was walking with this big mouth fat Chicago Polish dude who likes to because-play as a pimp-- he had like 2 million or so on him and the cop made him take him to his apartment and he found a bullet in there and dude had to pay him like 300 mil or so-.

A few times I have been rousted for smoking a J -- ended up giving a bribe.
