The point of not having your phone out in areas like El Centro is that those little street rats run by and snatch it out of your hand, and unless you can dash like Usain Bolt you are probably not going to catch them. I simply tried to give an alternative way to study a map but if you would rather whip your phone out because you think looking at a peice of paper is going to make you a target than by all means you go ahead. As far as having a piece of paper in your hand the person would have to be right up over your shoulder to be know exactly what you are looking at and personaly if I'm stopping to look at something I stand with a wall or other object to prevent someone from standing just behind me and I stay aware of my surroundings.

One thing I did not add in that last post is a person can also print off the directions from Google Maps. What I usually do is after I print the directions and while I'm still sitting at the computer with the map pulled up, I note how many streets are between each turn that I am going to take along the route, I write those down next to where Google has the distance between each turn, so that when I am walking I can glance at that, count the streets, make my next turn, then I glance at the map only after each turn, if your memory is better than mine you probably would not need to look at every turn. But if you prep enough before you go out you do not need to be staring at the paper the whole time..

One of the advantages of Medellin is the costs are low enough that I don't think twice about ending a session and moving on to another more willing provider. There are exceptions.
