What's wrong with actually using Schwab's brokerage? I have been with them for a few years now and haven't had any problems. Am I missing something? I moved to them when I found out about the ATM reimbursement and no foreign exchange fees.

I googled it out of curiosity. It costs them about $600 to gain a new customer. So ATM fee forgiveness might just be a promotion to attract customers. Maybe people who travel have the characteristics that Schwab seeks in their customers. One guy read the 10-K report and found that they have 10 million customers with 2. 7 trillion in assets. So the average customer has $270 k in their account.

Fidelity does the same thing.

Nothing at all and when I was active in the stock market I used Schwab all the time. I am no longer in the market, I'm too busy enjoying my twilight years to be bothered to do the research required to be a good stock investor.

I used to think it was foolish to send money to these girls. However, about 10 years ago when I was living in Indonesia, a girl sent me a text asking me for money for an operation. I wasn't in country at the time and hadn't seen her in a while so I just disregarded it. When I returned a couple of months later, I found out she had died. I now think it's "normally" foolish, but there are occasions where it's justified.

It is foolish because that is not your responsibility. Why go broke in a quest to figure out which occasions it may be justified for? Chick asks you for money for a new roof. You don't give it. It rains in the house and she catches pneumonia and dies. Chick asks you for taxi money. You don't give it. She runs across the street to catch the bus and gets hit by a car and dies.

Two things people will always need are air and money. When you turn that faucet on, it may not be so easy to turn off. Just say no from the beginning and leave it at that. If someone stops dealing with you because you will not send them money, that may be a person you may not want to be dealing with in the first place. The girl you knew had tons of family, friends, neighbors, classmates, coworkers, government officials, etc. But YOUR money was the only thing that could save her?

I meant debit card where I said credit card. And credit where I said debit.

I recommend finding a debit card that has no foreign currency exchange fee and forgives the ATM transaction cost. I use Schwab but you need to open a brokerage account to get the service last I checked.

I use credit card not big on loan but might look into debits cards now if I can find one offers reimbursement from Scandinavia. But usually when fees are high I take extra couple of dollars that keeps running a couple of days.

Buy far the best way to get money in Colombia is using ATM's. They will give you the best exchange rate on average and if you use a debit card from fidelity or Charles Schwab they will reimburse your ATM fees. For purchase use a credit card with no foreign transaction fee or cash.

Wiring money with Xoom or Western Union is a bad idea because of the fees and the an exchange rate that is not as good at you get at ATMs.

That makes sense thanks for the feedback, I just thinking about the safety when withdrawing from an ATM. Also I have a visa credit card from a European bank so I expect some fees depending on my bank.

None, and I hope I never do! My point is it's best not to close the door in one of them's face and send her home with no money..........(make mad) one of these girls off or try to not pay her and see how far that gets you! Sooner or later you will run into one of the girls that has her brother, cousin, Boyfriend or a guy friend that is involved in her business.

I am sure everyone here has experienced Colombian girlfriends asking you to send money for many reasons. I have been asked for the following: My kids need money for school, or need money so girl friend can pay for school or need money for rent or food or medicine for her or parents or grandparents or kids. Need money for an operation for her or a family member. But today I got a new one. Please send money my mother is in prison and I have no one to take care of my kids now? I am trying to find out why mom is in prison?
