I think the taxi drivers do this to rack up the meter because they turn on the meter before talking to you.

I also had a taxi driver take me a 20 minute detour on a 15 minute ride.

1st taxi from the airport was great. Drove fast and directly to my hotel. The 2nd taxi driver couldn't read the google map. The third took me on the detour. After that I used uber exclusively.

Oh let's see. 1st I have stayed 4 times at the Botero for almost a month total, they don't allow smoking in the rooms, if you got a room that smelled like smoke you just should have asked for another room, and you should have asked for a blanket if you wanted one. Why worry too much about learning Spanish at all. I have been many places. As long as I have Google translate and moola, I am good. Its always been fascinating to me communicating with people who speak another language. It may get awkward sometimes, even funny at times, but we always find a way.

I sort of agree. FWIW I speak Spanish and it has enriched my experience in Colombia, DR, Cuba, etc. However, I don't speak Portuguese and I've had the time of my life in 18-20 trips to Brasil.

I'd try all three places. Look at weather charts if that's important to you because each locale has definite good and bad times for weather.

Also, if you're going to Brasil, it's a long flight, so give yourself at least a week.
