Oh let's see. 1st I have stayed 4 times at the Botero for almost a month total, they don't allow smoking in the rooms, if you got a room that smelled like smoke you just should have asked for another room, and you should have asked for a blanket if you wanted one. I get them about 1/2 the time with out asking but it's not really cold enough to need one. The pillows have always seemed fine to me, but everybody's different.

If you went to "the park", I assume you meant Parque Bolivar, yes they are TV's there, you should have gone behind Iglesia Vera Cruz or over to the Raudal block. Actually with no Spanish and 1st time there you should have avoided the street scene altogether. Or gone with some one who knew what's what.

You have to pay up front with the strip clubs, no way around that. But you should have waited and watched the girls on stage and picked one out after you saw her naked. Or checked her out at the table little closer, 7 to a 3? LOL.

And Maracaibo is a distant 3rd place for number of cuties, you should have gone down 2 doors to Barra Ejective or down to Conejitas (or caught a taxi to Fase II more likely).

The place across the street was Yakusa, a low end Casa mostly useful due to how late they stay open, and the girls there are 45 k per 1/2 HR so a 50 k tip would be way too much. Plus you can take them across the street to your hotel which is nice, they do get the occasional cutie.

Why worry too much about learning Spanish at all. I have been many places. As long as I have Google translate and moola, I am good. Its always been fascinating to me communicating with people who speak another language. It may get awkward sometimes, even funny at times, but we always find a way.

I asked myself the same question! But Rio was originally my 1st trip but went to Sosua instead. Now that I have 1 trip under my belt I have learnt a lot and can venture somewhere that maybe isn't suited for 1st timers??

I went back to my hotel and told the person at the counter what happened. I asked him where his favorite place was and he pointed me across the street. He told me to go with a particular girl. The girl working the cash register was freaking hot as hell. She was a solid 10. It turns out she only worked the cash register and was clocking out too. I guess she was used to pull in the guys? If I had to do it all over again, I would have done more research and got a better hotel at the start and explored more than two clubs. I also would have figured out the correct tip to pay as well as what the prices should be. I was flying blind with the prices and may have caused a temporary uptick in prices for the rest of you guys. Sorry guys, but yeah Colombia has my vote of approval.

The story mentions an incident in La Candelaria. That is a little close to our stomping grounds. The normal rules apply, we have to avoid isolated locations because there is safety in numbers.

I've learned this is a good practice in other urban areas too. Back in the mid 90's when Los Angeles gang activity bled over to the west side I was minding my own business walking to meet friends at a sushi bar off Main Street in Venice. Without thinking I glanced at a couple of guys hanging on a side street corner smoking a blunt. One of them yelled at me "what's up homeboy, what's up! I waved and kept moving because I was running late. They started walking toward me and yelling "who are you with fool? They peeled off when what I thought was a random car flashed a spotlight on us. When I told my friends what happened they told me not to cut down side streets at night south of the Santa Monica border in Venice at night. They explained there was more gang activity lately and it wasn't safe. It's a mistake I wouldn't have normally made but I was in a hurry to not be late so I parked off the beaten path and took a shortcut. I hope I learn from my mistakes.

They try to stay away from killing tourists because it really brings down the heat, the cops will actually try and solve the case. (although I was pleasantly surprised last week when the MED police actually found and arrested the guy who murdered my Conejitas sweetie last Sept).

Over all average wise you are safer as a US tourist in Colombia then you are while in the US.

US overall homicide rate is 4.8 per 100,000, the Colombian rate 26.5 per 100,000 for Colombians.

They try to stay away from killing tourists because it really brings down the heat, the cops will actually try and solve the case. A US tourist probably spends two weeks in Colombia and 50 weeks in USA, adjusted for that the murder rate will change to a more accurate number, approx. 24.

I am a little surprised nothing has been mentioned on this board concerning the mounting tension / violence that is growing between gangs themselves and with police in the western sector of Medellin. (San Javier) I have very little info to offer, but I do know some of my amigas in Robledo are getting stressed out concerning this.

Does anyone here have any info on the subject??? I will be arriving in 2 weeks for an extended stay in Laureles. I see in this report that something has gone down in UNICENTRO (very near where I will be); so things may be spilling over into other sectors of Medellin.
