Wait a sec. "Colectivo" is not a standard taxi. A "Colectivo" is a shared taxi: they can load more persons and unload them in sequence where they want. The route can be optimized, but it is not the same as having a driver who takes you from your point A to your point be.

Colectivo is also not a legal taxi. It's an underground network of taxis that operate on the same route to and from.

All that to save $5-10? LOL.

My research is giving me conflicting reports. 80% of the Colombians I talk to say it can be unlocked easily. In Mexico and the DR phones can be easily unlocked as well for about the same price. However, some Colombians like the owner of my Airbnb describe going to "many places in Bogota, and none being able to unlock" their American phones.

You should be able to unlock it right away. Call ATT as for help. I have a drawer full of unlocked phones, half are ATT phones. All you need is a code to unlock it. There is no easier way. All this running around town for some magic solution is a waste of your time. If you can't get that one unlocked, got to Walmart, get the cheapest go-phone and unlock that one. Get a Colombian SIM when you get in and pop it in.

What I did last November was order a 7 Plus from through a friend of mine who has an ATT contract. The ATT rep had no problem selling me an unlocked phone and me paying with my credit card.

Any phone can be unlocked, old or new. You can buy unlocked versions of any phone. Newer phones cost more to unlock or to buy unlocked than older phones. Many Americans pay for phones as part of service provider contracts. Those contracts generally restrict how soon you can request unlock codes. If a phone is "under contract" with a carrier, you would have to contact the carrier to request a free unlock code. I only buy unlocked phones because I travel frequently and have no patience for dealing with carriers and unlocking services. In my experience, the cost of an unlocked phone is has always been less than the cost of contracts with carriers like T&T and T-Mobile. Those contracts are advertised as including "free phones" or "free phone upgrades." They are not nearly free because they require you buy data plans and pay monthly fees for years at a time. It adds up to much more than the $500 to $1,000 cost of late model smartphones.

So I am still in Medellin going on almost one month this visit, this being my third visit this year and dozens and dozens since 2008.
