Short answer: doesn't appear to have an impact in Quito at least.

This could happen any where, any country. There is a pouch that you could strap around your lower leg to keep your money, passport. It is sold at places like travel accessories. It is very useful! I have visited, Japan, Taiwan, So Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. In spent lots of time in Cambodi when Svay pak was open! Never had any trouble. To walk with few drinks on in estrange places is to ask for trouble!

I use these too, they're quite good. I've got a couple -- the Eagle Creek one is quite good but make sure the velcro is secure. There are brands of travel clothing with hidden pockets: a good British brand is Rohan. Other places include under the insoles of your trainers. Trainers should be scruffy as some places will mug you for good-looking trainers. If they're new, I introduce them to some dried mud. One of the best places also worth using (eg a for a mobile phone) is down your crotch. Mostly the last place a mugger will look. Mine was in Lisbon. Here's what I do now:

Use the hotel safe, for passport, backup credit cards etc.

It's very important, put a note on the door for yourself to collect them on the way out. More than once I've caught myself at the last minute.

I just use my regular wallet, with my driver's lic, and cash and whatever card I want. Driver's licenses are good enough for I'd.

I also use pants / shorts with zippered pockets. I have some from llbean, and Duluth trading company. Duluth seems to be better.

I went to a nude beach in Italy, there I took only a photocopy of my dl and passport, and bus fare and beer money. No cards.

In Barcelona I was fingered twice in the same day. But my zippered pants easily saved the day.
