Nobody report about car rentals so I think for anyone need to rent a car in asuncion will be usefull. Asking around the varius companies, most they give an offer for one month rental 850 to 1050 US. Finally AVIS propably gave me the best offer for 900 all inclunding and for sure without a car you are in the big trap that calling MICROCENTRO. And something more about how cheep is the country, I found to be same with Argentina in everything except privado prices and this not in all privados, there are places that are out of logic asking for one hour even 1000000 G that meens with today rates more than 250 US. I ll be back if I have something intersting.

For cars, I get the best rate from TRANSGUARANI (it was for 3 days). As the clim did not worked properly, the lady agreed to upset my milage excess. So it was fair. Car brought to my hotel. TRANSGUARANI: (595 21) 662071.

As far as Travellers Guide are concerned, according to me there is only one in English: BRADT GUIDE "PARAGUAY"

In it you have all the historical and art background very useful.

For example, MUSEO DEL BARRO in ASUNCION is absolutely a must for popular religious art in a modern museum as well as primitive art. For primitive art MUSEO BOGGIANI in SAN LORENZO where you can also buy indian crafts is also remarkable. I spent 3 weeks (with only one shot a day as I am not so young) and enjoyed really the place!

I was in Asc at the same time as ken, sadly events conspired to stop us from meeting. He has a keen eye for detail and by the sound of it, had a blast. I was encumbered by my rental guide and thus I sort of brought sand to the beach.

Nevertheless, I'd caution anyone going in any month but June / July that it's a sweaty hole. If you are over the age when 3 pops a day are possible, you'll spend most of your time in your air conditioned hotel room. I have to say, this is one of the safest capital cities I've mongered in though and I do plan to return.

i stayed there for one month. the apartment is right on the street side, so it will be fairly noisy by day. but for mongering, this is a perfect place since this is fairly centrally located and unlike an hotel, nobody will check who gets in your room.

the montly price for a very large room with fridge, high speed internet, tv and private bath was 1350000 guaranis, which at current rate is 350 usd. for the apartment with a small kitchen, this would be 1500000 guaranis, over 400 usd.

the owners are french and they have a restaurant called "le saint tropez" two blocks away from the house, and their salads are excellent and resonably priced (4 usd).

for your information, the dollar lost 25% within a few month. it was above 5,000 in october, it s now under 4, 000 (3, 890 today but lower with exchange commissions) , reflecting current administration paper printing. the only way for those countries to avoid destructive inflation is to let the usd sink.
