Visiting Paraguay for the first time and just arrived in Asuncion this morning. The Paraguay section has been pretty dead, but based on older posts, I decided my best options were Parada on 838 Iturbe, PY Escorts on 462 Cerro Cora, and Valkirias at 905 Azara. (Thanks to all who contributed to this thread.).

I just finished a punt at Parada and was disappointed. I did not bring a hot water maker. I've never owned one of those and I want to actually boil it. If I remember right, I had a camp stove with me. On the Cutter, they do sell it in a spray but I use and recommend the liquid out of the pump bottle. You get better coverage if you rub it on and the liquid is better for that. Plus, the can is kinda big for traveling. One thing I should mention is I never wear shorts outdoors in Latin America so that helps with the skeeters. I did use the tap water in the hotel to brush my teeth and had no problems. For drinking, I would buy the 4 - 5 litre bottles of water from the El Pais grocery market together with the beer and repeat when needed to be replaced. Bottled water is cheap in the grocery market. I had no stomach problems in Paraguay at all while I did in Peru.

I had no problems with insects nor mosquitoes. Did not see even a single one. It's the time of the year, usually rainy season when the insects and mosquitoes breed. I had good weather, from late 70's to 90's F. Also I found most places to be clean and did not have to use any of those things listed under Ken Apples' "Guide to Asuncion for Newbies". Must be earlier times. I do carry flip flops though for shower as I do use them in the gym in the USA too as the floor probably does not get cleaned after visits. I also carry some toilet paper every country I go to as I have been to some countries where it may be hard to find a toilet, let alone toilet paper! I left Ken Apples goodies that I carried in Asuncion on the way back to reduce the weight in the baggage. Comparing Peru to Paraguay, I can visit Peru for the Amazon and Maccu Piccu, not Lima and I also do find Paraguay people very friendly and a possible return visit. One update, "Deseos" the picture that you have, yellow building with blue trim windows is closed. Three Brazilian Churasquias (Grilled Meats) that I ate at were Paulista Grill, Acuarelas and Sul Brazil. Paulista was the most elegant and most expensive, next was Acuarelas and finally Sul Brazil was the least expensive of the three. The meat at the Paulista and Acuarelas were over-cooked and very tough while the meat at Sul Brazil was soft, moist and chewy. Skip Paulista and Acuarelas and save money IMHO.

RTFF to get a feel for ASU so you have some knowledge beforehand and ask questions of the senior memebers after studying the ASU forum. And if you do not speak Castellano (Spanish) at an intermediate level please bring a Wingman who does. Also, a Wingman would be good for your mutual protection and fellowship.

I do not have much time at the moment but may do a comparison later. In the mean time, please read Lexton's posts on Asuncion which are quite informative and to the point. Though Lima is a much bigger city, Asuncion basically has the Centro which more or less is a ghost town at night after the city workers go home and the east side where the rich live and is more lively. Centro has homeless sheds right next to the Presidential Place and broken sidewalks plus many buildings in need of repair. The East side is much nicer, where the money is. Miraflores or San Isidro are well kept areas of Lima. As a City, Lima is much nicer and in Peru one can visit the Machu Picchu or the Amazon while Paraguay does not really have these sights. What Paraguay has is the people. Very easy going, laid back and helpful. August - 17 - Sunday. The idea was to try as many Casas as possible during the trip. I obtained the lists by looking at the past posts on ISG.
