(if all you know of paraguay is cidade d. este, that place is the a'hole of the country: no comparison). people are friendly and the girls are real sweethearts in asuncion. continually surprised at the lack of pretension. start talking to anyone you think you might like to know. clubs are live end of the week and no one goes out to them before 1 a.m. party gets into full swing around three. don't be put off by the line getting into coyote: it's worth the wait. i went with guys i met at the gym i went to everyday and they knew girls there and they did speak english. in town: there are 'walk up the stairway, hovel brothrels' rep001tered through the old center city. as for escort agencies, they are nothing but the girls from these brothrels who live there 24/7 responding to walk-in trade and telephone reservations. this is low-end stuff and priced accordingly -- $26 an hour. there was a nightclub located at 845 mexico and another one called playboys near the principal plaza with girls for takeout, for fees rangeing from 60-100$, depending on time. hours until 3 a.m. assume all hotels are girl-friendly. other notes: belles artes museum undergoing repairs with no scheduled re-opening date; there's a river tour and a city tour, but not much more. couldn't find a bad italian restaurant if you tried. no need to reserve unless you want one of the 2 or 3 best hotels in town as they get fully booked. the others you can walk in and negotiate rates cheaper than what's advertized on the web. there are better places than the palmas sol: it's noisy, has low budget backpack people, and what girl from coyote's is going to want to go there with you. another thing: many girls hanging around street-corners at night. all kinds. mostly bad, but sometimes there'd be something that'd make you look twice. to go again, i'd arrive thusday and stay for two weekends. not longer, unless wanted to see more of the country and/or it's women.

I read good comments on PALMAS DEL SOL hotel and decided to stay there.

Near the center (Plaza Uruguaya at 5 mn) very nice gardens and terraces inside the hotel; little swimming pool and excellent breakfast with 4 kind of fresh fruit juices; corn flakes; pastries, cheese, ham; omelette with bacon etc.

Perfect room with safe.

Official rate is 154 KG but I negociated without any difficulty when I arrived, for a minimim of 3 nights 137 KG breakfast and taxes included and clearly specified, no supplement to bring girls (they said OK. Of course except if the girl was really staying there. Meaning eating breakfast. Quite normal). The reception speaks a little english and german. Seen some Germans, Italians and some groups of French clients.

I advertised in a social website for a female companion in Asuncion. If she is available, I like to take her Iguazu Falls. This particular woman replied. She said she can take me to the Falls and act as my guide. She also clearly told me that all expenses I have to pay for her plus $100. I left Asuncion by NSA bus. It took about five and half hours. I did not reserve a seat earlier. It looks like the bus was not full. Fare was Guarani 73 mil, about $15 per ticket. I hired a lady guide for the entire trip. She did not speak English at all and my Spanish is limited. So communication is a little hard. But that was a great way of learning Spanish quickly. We arrived about 7 pm. We took a taxi from the bus station to hunt for a hotel. At the end we ended up with the hotel Panorama Inn, $45 per room. I would grade it as a three star hotel. The taxi driver was asking us if you want to hire his taxi for the entire day including the trip to the falls on the Brazilian side. I did not have a Brazilian visa. When I asked him if it would create a problem for me, he laughed. No problem at all. Since I do not have any experience, I thought I would give it a try. I hired him for the day for $80, 8 am to 5 pm. We started around 8 am from the hotel and straight towards the Falls. I was a little nervous when approaching Brazilian side. Boy what a surprise, no check, nothing. In fact taxis have separate line to cross the boarder. The police just waved us off. We spend about 5 hours there. After lunch, came back around 3pm and just see around the city. Nothing much to see here though. we are going back to Asuncion today. I will write later about my guide from Asuncion

One thing I forgot to mention in my report. A number of people in this thread have mentioned that they got sick eating the food in Asuncion.

I ate at small restaurants, hotels, big restaurants, you name it. Never a single problem. While I am careful not to eat street food for the most part, I thought that food safety here seemed fine.

I drank tap water about 1/2 the time, with never a problem, as well.
